LD40 - Snake by Torhaq

[raw]
made by Torhaq for LD 40 (JAM)

Here is my game for the LD40 Jam entry: Snake

It's an small snake-like game. The gameplay is pretty simple: Eat fruits (apple) to earn points. But, be carefull, the more your eat, the more you are growing.

Controls

  • Left and right arrow to turn
  • "Fire button" to give a boost to the snake

(A gamepad should work fine as well)

Gameplay

  • If your head touch your body, you lose. (the trees are deadly too).
  • The walls doesn't "kill" you but bounce you, so be aware of the angle.
  • To help you, a "pill" will sometime spawn to reduce your body part if you pick it up.

Conclusion

I had many ideas, but not enough time to implement them (weather system with night mode, more fruits and bonus, multiplayer splitted screen). Maybe later...

Thanks all, have fun, and most important, don't hesitate to give me your feedback.

Interresting mechanic of movement and I like the way the snake's bouncing against walls ! Sadly gamefeel is not here and the game is quite hard to handle

**Fun:** Pretty fun to play! Although the controls are a bit awkward.

**Innovation:** Gameplay taken straight out from classic snake game.

**Theme:** Suits the theme pretty well!

**Graphics:** The game's strongest aspect. The game has really decent graphics!

**Audio:** There is nothing to say about though.

**Humor:** Not much humor.

**Mood:** No mood.

Overall, I think the game is pretty decent. Although the length of the game is pretty short, the game is nice & fun to play! :)

If you die and click to try again, the snake doesn't move. And the snake's speed is maybe a bit too fast for how slowly it turns. But this looks and sounds fun. This could be a really nice snake clone with some tweaks.

Great innovation on a classic game! I really enjoyed the graphics and the audio effects in this one. The snake was a bit hard to control, but the presentation was excellent. Thanks for creating this game.

Very Cool & Fun, and even funnier when you figure out that you can bounce in the walls!

And very nice GUI design too!

An interesting take on the classic snake game, but as others said, the controls are a bit awkward. When the snake gains acceleration, it feels like it's on an ice surface. I am not sure of the purpose of the "boost" command since the snake is already fast enough. Also, for some reason the game felt a bit slow on my laptop, even though the graphics didn't look too demanding for a graphic card.

The cool thing about the original snake to me were the precise controls that allowed for insane tricks when mastered. Snatching the apple from that 2 width spot and returning successfully. Sadly, this is completely absent from this game.

I liked the art and sound, though. The light cone was a nice touch.

Very nice looking snake-like game. I also liked the bouncing off of walls and pills to reduce size. However, the snake's movement is a little bit slow.

A nice little snake game. The art is good, although I do believe that the biting sound effect could perhaps be more effective -- it just doesn't quite seem to be the "right" sound effect for the snake model in the game.

My main problem gameplay-wise is that the bounce angle is not particularly intuitive, and I think that this is because it sort of relies on what the player is doing at the time of collision (i.e. where they are trying to steer).

The idea is simple and good. The graphics is really cute, and the sound effects is okay. But for me the game was way too difficult. Overall a well made LD game.

The game isn't very complicated, but it looks pretty and it's challenging once the snake starts speeding up. I epected to bounce off of trees but barely touching a tree seemed to instant kill me.

Nice job on this one :) Great graphics and nice mechanics. The game increase in difficulty very fast though so may maybe make it more gradual than that. Also, decreasing the snake dimensions could make it more manageable to play. My advice is to make the speed related to eating the fruit not just the time factor because that is what I felt; that it was just getting faster regardless of the snake eating anything.
Great job:)
