Aatmo by Gaming Night

Thanks for playing! This is our first game jam participation, and our first game ever!

Our interpetration of the theme is "The more power you have, the worst game experience you'll get". You control a character just before a boss fight. You have the opportunity to collect items that give you strength. But if you do so, you get too much power, and the game gets boring.

Additionally, we wanted to connect the topic to a moral dilemma: the items you collect are also the souls of your people. Meaning that getting more has also a bad impact on the story.

Our all point is that our instinctive gamer behaviour (looting) does not necessarily lead to the best moral choices, or to the funniest game play.

The game is very simple to play, and very short, but we hope you'll enjoy your time!

Made using Unity and Photoshop / Illustrator / After Effects !

tHE Style is awesome. It's really interesting how you understood the given theme .. ' the worse experiencec you will get'. And that's how it pretty much was. Although, The game seemed a little bit linear in my taste. The boss is cool, but he could do more. Spawn ads, etc. Something to make it more dynamic. Pressing my button a million times isn't quite fun, I choose the easy way!!!

Keep it up. The artwork needs some credit. Sleek and tasty. Good job!

Thank you for your comment ! Indeed, as a first game, the most difficult job, rather than solving technical issues, was to make it fun to play. No doubt we'll do better on the next LD.

Good graphics. The characters looked simple, but memorable. Battle ambiance was nice, but before that is was too quiet. Noticed the eyes on the boss, nice attention to detail.

Interesting interpretation of the theme. But for me it was "with sacrifice or without sacrifice". 1 sacrifice and the boss dies with 3 hits, so it doesn't matter if it is 1 or 30 sacrifices. Also didn't feel the moral dilemma. Only the big family made me question my power, but nothing else.

Lack of turbo shooting is disappointing. Dash was never used. Also there's no exit button, this is not good.

Overall it's a nice game.

You readed in my mind. I harvested all of my people like crops at first try. I managed to win after 2nd try without any souls. Cool theme understanding, graphics and mood but spammin LMP stole my whole fun from this game.

Interesting interpretation! It sure did feel a little bad to have won the "easy" way. It gets me thinking about the everyday moral choices we make. Nice graphics and mood. A game that taps into your feelings.

Really makes you think after you win about what have you done. Love it!

I really like this take on the theme. You created a game with simple but beautiful art and fitting music. But it is the story that makes it truly amazing. Every character adds to the poignant tale resting on a fundament of morality to let Aatmo become an engaging game. I love that you went with it and made the largest difference between 0 and 1 soul! The endscreen is finally just the perfect cherry on top.

Interesting art. Nice idea for a side quest. The moral choice is not that complicated. But I liked the narrative behind the game, good pseudo-mythological concept. Dunno why I remembered now how they mocked the Chosen thing in Bard's tale, just dunno).

I loved the clean look and minimalist art. Also interesting take on the theme and insertion of moral choices. I enjoyed the game and found boss fight challenging when no sacrifice is made. Great job!

I love the interpretation of the theme, really nice idea. But the fight was already pretty easy, if you just sacrifice one (and for the first one, you don't even know, you sacrifice him, if you don't read the description before). I think I would like a slightly weaker scaling more.

Very good idea, well executed! The art is excellent. Using a font that isn't Arial would've been better i think. Nice logo. :)

The art looks really good, love the style. I feel that the game is a bit too binary as to what your power is, either you take the power from one person and then can kill the boss really quickly or you dont take any power and it takes a very long time to win.

I love the art of this game; it is simple yet effective. I see that you are playing with the concept of risk & reward a little bit so I have a little suggestion. As I play the game I liked to stay on the border of the arena so that I could dodge the bullets better, but what if my damage becomes bigger if I get close to the monster. This is something worth trying out as it introduces more challenge with very little effort. This is really a good game considering it being your first entry! Nice work!

Nice game, I'll return to it until I succeed to beat the boss with zero upgrade :)

Nice art style, but the balance could use more work. Would be great with more monsters/bosses.

Really nice graphics and really cool take on the theme. Need to be able to hold down the mouse button to fire though, it's very damaging to have to click that fast repeatedly.

Really like the core idea of sacrificing in-game NPCs to reduce difficulty. It's definitely the thing that would work better in a longer game that can establish relationships, but it definitely shows promise here.

I like very much the core idea of the game. We jammers should always be questioning the main ideas of mainstream video games, and that's exactly what you do here. You address the common gamer behavior that is to accumulate wealth and power without thinking about how it is obtained, and that's really interesting. Indeed, I experienced this issue on my own with some commercial games.

Also, lovely visual design :) Congrats!
