Spacy adventure by egordorichev


Small shooter game written for Ludum Dare 39 in 48 hours.
About the game
You need to control your space ship and keep eye on the energy! Every shot cost's you some, as you move forward, your battery discharges.
Avoid enemies, kill the boss and survive as long, as you can!

"Bullets" with white particles are pickups. There is four kinds of them:
- Shield
- Clock
- Battery
- Bomb

Anyway, super cool game and looks beautiful!
Initially I thought that the power ups were some kind of missiles T.T.
And... Dammn! Those explosives animations look AWESOME!

I love the pixel art style.
I like the look, and especially the feel. Effect you added to you and your enemies getting hit really gives off a nice feeling of impact.
The power conservation mechanic also makes the gameplay strategies different from most schmups, as you can't be holding down the fire button constantly, and instead have to pick your shots. It was super interesting!
So reaaaally good job overall :)
And it plays fun and simple. Nice entry out here!
One thing I disliked were the stars. They filled up the screen to much and made it hard to see what's going on. Other than that I think it's a solid game. Good job!
I really liked that your bullet could kill many enemies at the same time.
On the other hand, it was not very clear whether the updates from the shop had any effect or not, and I would often forget to upgrade...
This game deserves some catchy music!

One bug I’ve encountered - I did something and then I couldn’t access the shop anymore. I had to reload page to get it to work properly again
The only thing missing is really some background music. Other than that I can't say anything bad about it. It's very challenging (in a good way), controls nicely and is plain fun. Really awesome work.
By the way - thank you for putting the shop on Z and C. I've been having some problems with other games because of my QWERTZ layout.
** Sound **: You really did a good job with the sound effects they really remind me of the old space bullet hell shooters :D
** Graphics **: Really fitting for your game, i especially like the gamecube controller like enemy :)
** Gameplay **: The gameplay is really fun, altough a bit hard initially i had to try it a few times to get the hang of it (kind overlooked that i can buy in the shop during the game initially) :D
** Overall **: Congrats on creating a really nice game in the amount of time give :)
My only feedback would be that the powerup's are difficult to identify as they look like bullets (or at least they did to me).

Nice looking visuals, sweet music and sfx, nice action packed gameplay, what more can you really ask for in a shmup. Loved it!
Now I'm off to try few more times to see if there is something else interesting after the first boss and space invaders homage...

Hard as nails but addictive.
The only gripe I have with it is that the explosions make the enemy laser shots hard to see sometimes.
Sometimes the screen shake made it a bit hard to keep track of what was going on but I feel like that just added to the experience.
Great little game and on pico 8 none the less.
Controls are great and responsive. And the upgrades are quite balanced.
I like the difficulty level. It's hard, true, but not punishing. It encourages you to keep trying.

The spaceship is a tiny bit too slow I often was not able to collect the powerups because I had to scroll to the other side of the screen.
I did not like the energy meter linked to the shots. When it gets hectic all of a sudden I am dead...

Overall a great entry, so far my high score is 337 but I am going to get that up for sure :-D
Good entry ! Everything is good, all I can say is that the controls of the ship don't feel very responsive, but then it might be a game design decision (to make dodging more difficult ?), can't really know.
Brings me back to when I played tons of flash games on my computer, I'd find tons of "space shooters" like this one. This one does stand out tho, with the shop system.

Personally, I felt the background was a little too distracting and frequently found myself not seeing enemy projectiles because they are lost in the stars zooming by. I also somehow glitched it to where no enemies spawned in the first wave. I just sailed through space until I got to the first boss -- then it seemed to back to normal.

A bit too busy and distracting visually. Too many particles (i know, what a thing to say!) Colours are not used consistently. Eg. yellow is used for bullets, but also energy powerups. Powerups look and move like bullets, give them a more floaty movement perhaps and a different shape.
- the graphics are very nice
- as are the sounds
What would make me like the game even more:
- since it's a small screen and a lot thing are happening I some time had hard time distinguishing if it's an upgrade or something that would hurt me - some more distinction would help
- an alternative control scheme for those of us used to WSAD would help
The artstyle and animations look great. Overall, a nice little game!

Very simple concept but you managed to polish it a lot and add many features
Man, this is hash! Enemies shoots are too fast to be dodged, you have to get a feel for their frequency. Is this the Dark Souls of space invaders? ;)
And then, i kept playing... and i was gladly surprised. It's a simple idea, but excellently executed! The graphics are clear and feel ultra polished (mainly because of the amount of particles, probably). The gameplay is fluid and feels great.
But goddamn, everything hurts you... shooting, being shot, not shooting.
Overall, i'd say this is a great game. Congratulations.
If i were to be reeeeally nitpicky... i don't know, maybe i'd say the "Energy" bar can be difficult to see at times, but the red end really helps... I don't know. I try to criticise every piece i find, but it's hard on this one.

The graphics are awesome. The sound is good, considering the pico-8 sound editor isn't the grandest thing. The game is quite fun, but could be tweaked to make it even more fun.

Overall this is pretty good! I have two main suggestions:
1) Avoiding enemy bullets felt a bit like an exercise in futility. I don't think I had a problem with visual busyness as the posters above did, but rather I think simply because the bullets travel very quickly and because the ship takes a bit to accelerate, it's essentially impossible to react to an enemy shot by dodging (I also couldn't discern any pattern or warning as to when an enemy was about to shoot). I think this would be a much more interesting game if enemies shot slower-moving bullets as you'd then need to weave your way around them while still shooting back and collecting powerups. You know, like in most shmups =) As it is the only way to avoid enemy bullets is to not be in their line of fire...but you *have to* be in their line of fire to shoot back.
2) The shop menu needs to be a bit more discoverable I think. I know you tell players how to open it in the beginning but since they're never prompted it's easy for them to just forget that it exists altogether, especially since there's never any break in the action and they can be way too focused on other things.
I think I got the same issue as @yetman, or at least something similar. I shot down one ship, then I had nothing appear on my screen except shield and battery bullets until I got to the boss. It only happened the one time for me.
Quite fun, great work on the text display, and buttons. I'm going to check out your code and learn! :) I think there is a bit too much going on though, and some effects could've been done nicer. Overall great work though!
My only glitch was in the shop, because I kept trying to press [Enter] to buy, which brought up the pause menu. For what it's worth, you can disable it with this poke (running it once per frame seems to do the trick).

My only suggestion would be to clean a bit the screen, sometimes is difficult to see the bullets since there is a lot of elements and movement.
Overall a great great game! Really enjoyable to play. Impressive work for just one person and two days. Congrats!!

My main complain is the "lines" in background that makes enemies bullets hard to indentify.
Sometimes a bug happens: At least three times the enemies stopped spawning in the beginning until the first boss.
High Score: 355
- Gameplay is really nice
- The fact that the music restart everytime you die is really frustrating when you die a lot in a short time
- The game is hard (Or i just suck?)
- A really nice entry !
