The hole at the end of the universe by Greet

[raw]
made by Greet for LD 41 (JAM)

Scenario

You can call me Horfel, the last remaining one.
I don’t know where I am, where I go, I don’t care,
I ought to only golf in this world of nightmare.
As there is nothing left, no hornet, wasp or bee,
To run with here and there, no mountain, path or sea,
I ought to only golf, now that mad men are gone.

From the gigantic union that all wanted to keep,
Where they all have built and all have created
Worlds, and fame, and greatness. What they awaited
Was to grant human the greatest means
and conquer sky and earth.

To the great overthrow where they began to weep,
Where they all fled faster than their old rocket ship,
Leaving their elders, disappearing in a snip,
And giving me rights of old queens
To live and golf and mirth.

I ought to only golf, and now, white ball, you fly

Description

Intense atmosphere thanks to the piano background, and nice contrasting with the golf + player teleporting!
I loved it. Maybe with some polish it would be fantastic.
Thanks for your work!

Great mix!! A little slow, though, but the level design is great and I found it quite original.

It was really buggy and I couldn't really play it :/ many times when the texbox appeared, I tried to klick and either it vanished and also shot the ball at the lowest strengh possible, or the shooting indicator got stuck and I couldn't shoot at all.

Realy liked the art style especially the character! A small improvement would be, that the first click only hides the "intro dialog". Had to restart the level because I wasn't happy with my first shot :)

Surprisingly difficult but the levels are short enough that re-trying doesn't seem so bad. I like the main menu art.

Love the music and the art. The WebGL version is a bit buggy with hitting the ball though.

Fantastic! The artwork is adorable! I completed every hole, though on some of them the blue pushing flame got in the way, and it took 19+ shots to make, but i completed them all nonetheless. Great work.

I hate golf, and I loved this, the whole mood of the game just sucked me in. And it's got the whole easy/intuitive to learn/play but difficult to master angle. Truly great job. You deserve many more ratings.

Damn, you got me crying all along with this music :'(
I couldn't help but finishing the game though, it was pretty hard at some moments, like this level where i had to play 35 times... xD
Anyway, i loved it, the system of par/albatros... just get along so well with this, it got me win dancing for an albatros (while crying of course).
A couple issues though :
- For some reasons, i first thought the arrow pointing at the finish line was a wind indicator... just because it is a golf game you know ...
- The blue / red flames were a pretty cool mechanic, but more than once i got stuck and had to play in the air ! ^^

Oh, and THANK GOD the water isn't adding a penalising point, or i would have never made a bogey x)

Great job, guys

Ps: Je viens de voir que vous etes français aussi, des bisous !

Just like @Theras said, a click to make the text disappear would have been nice. I got a small bug when I clicked the right button by mistake, but overall it was more than fine. The graphics for the main character I felt were weird, because I could never identify what the character looked like, except from the main menu.
I enjoyed the level design and the whole game overall - I kept draggin my mouse in the opposite direction because that's what most other games do, but I quickly worked it out.
One small note on the levels, I finally understood how the "red fire" works only when the game was already over :)

Loved the pixel art! Level design is good. The music was really good! If there were more levels, I would play them.
Please check out our game too and give a rating. An honest rating and any comments are much appreciated.

Nicely done, worked well. The shot strength meter was a bit too fast for me to be able to execute consistently.

As an aside, on very right edge in level 10 I got into an infinite loop where the ball kept dropping into the pit before i could shoot it.

This was hilarious when I realized what two categories you were combining! Love the music and the mechanics. If I were to give a critique, then maybe decrease the wait time before you can shoot again? Either way, cool game!

Awesome stuff! Really like the aesthetic and the fact that you were able to infuse some story/mythology to it! Had some frustration with the feedback of missed shots, and wasn't really sure why they happened all the time. Maybe leave the graphic for the 'backswing' up a bit just to see what I landed on. Check out my game if you get the chance! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/trivia-kart

Really cool stuff you've got :) The mood you achieve with the blend of aesthetics, the relaxing bit of golf that requires focus and concentration, the music... very cool. The levels are challenging, though, but clever. Really nice entry!

Great concept, I had fun playing it through! Interesting that you could actually give the ball a proper top spin. So many actually well designed levels, great job with the level design aspect as well.

Couldn't quite get into the story but it is an appreciated effort. It felt like it didn't register all of my mouse clicks and I ended up messing some of my shots because of that... Liked the pixel art & idle animation, overall you managed to create a wonderful game :)

Had some difficulty with registering mouse clicks at times, and holding the mouse would also cause the meter to reset sometimes. Still, the art is great, the mood is spot on, and the levels are very well designed. Great job on the drowning ball and player teleport animations as well. Solid work.

Didn't think there would be a golf game! Great idea :)

What worked:
- Shooting the ball and where it landed felt good. I never felt cheated.
- Great mash up of themes
- Was a lot of fun to play!

What needs some polish:
- The art felt a little too pixelated.

Great job! I started getting cocky after the 8th hole, then the 9th hole got BRUTALLY DIFFICULT! I had a ton of fun trying to figure out how to make it through. Thanks for sharing!

Hello, super jeu que vous avez fait là, le concept est bien foutu et c'est bien executé, la courbe de difficulté est bien gérée j'ai passé à bon moment, bonne continuation !

Wow, this works so well! I am wondering now, why no one has made a golfing platformer before. I could totally see this as a SNES classic!
