Ultimate Card Fighter VS Zombies by Keithdae

[raw]
made by Keithdae for LD 41 (JAM)

Hello there, two devs trying a game jam for the first time, we did our best, and learnt a lot during this event 😀

preview-1.png

We decided to combine card games with a beat'em up, resulting in Ultimate Card Fighter VS Zombies.

You are a geek in a city filled with monsters, use your magic cards to wipe 'em all !

The gameplay is turn-based with two phases : * A planning phase where you chose which card to use and plan your movement. The mobs are stopped during this part of the turn, think fast, you only have 6 seconds * An execution phase where the character does what you've planned and mobs will try to get you

Controls

  • WASD/Arrow keys : Move the character
  • Spacebar : Validate your move, if you don't want to use a card
  • Left-click : Chose a card, left-click again to validate the location to use the card
  • Right-click : Cancel the card selection

Team

  • Keithdae (programing, music) Note : I'm sorry about the music being a 20-second loop, trying to figure out how to compose even simple music was harder than I thought 😐 It was enjoyable though so I'll definitely learn about it for the next time 😉
  • Sabeurre (programing, graphics)

Really hyped to test what people have created for this theme

Pretty fun. Wasn't sure what I was doing at first, I didn't understand that you had to click the card and then click the location to use it. It seems weird that spacebar is used to cancel using a card but also still moves you? Overall pretty fun

Interesting! It lacks a little feed back (time gauge etc)! Otherwise the principle is excellent, a card combination method could make everything more dynamic too!

Funny game! Also had trouble getting into it since I didn't know what I was doing but I managed to play it! Nice game :D

Good and fun game idea, however the controls are counterintuitive, there is no feedback for the player, it takes time to realize what you are doing, but very funny once you discover it. Nice work!

Interesting mix :).
The game is a bit hard, i tried the easy mode and it was long and difficult to beat (i didn't).
Some improvements to think about :
- help us to notice click validation because sometime we are not sure our card/action was applied
- the way we apply the cards could be more elegant. I think the method used in Slay the Spire could be perfect for this game and it could give a better flow
Good work for the 1st time :)

Interesting combination. After I find out how to move and use a card, this game becomes very enjoyable. I need to think about how to maximise an attack card effect.Nice Game.

Thanks for all the reviews and suggestions ! Glad you enjoyed the game even if it was confusing :D

Feedback for the player was definitely lacking, we'll put more thoughts on that for our future games ;)

I really like the idea but found the controls a bit hard to get used to.

Loved the concept, it was a bit strange between when action are executed and action that you are try to set... Because sometimes I was trying to set but it executed previous action 0: But good game anyway... C: SUPERNOVA

Found it difficult to understand exactly how the mechanics worked. The interface needs some work, not in terms of graphics, but in terms of feedback on what's going on with the current state.
It's awesome that you had the pre-action ghosting thing happening!

I love the idea, But it was a little weird activating a card, was a bit confusing at first. But fun, i enjoyed it :) Great job! https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/escape-1 << Check out my game if you'd like :)

Fun idea! I had some issues figuring out what was going on first but pretty quickly caught up.

I found it quite annoying that you had to wait until the end of time to game to continue. Many times I had no reasonable cards to play so I just wanted to skip the planning phase. Another annoying thing was that you needed to use mouse to pick cards. At the same time you needed your both hands for the keyboard during fighting. Changing between two is very frustrating and picking cards should have been possible with keyboard.

But overall, good concept and I loved how many different abilities you managed to make for a marathon game!

@Nash : you can actually use numbers from the keyboard to use the card, but we forgot to include it in the controls section. I guess, it should have been written on the UI too ^^

But thank you all for your feeback o/

The controls were weird, but I like the overall idea, I tried quiet a while but could not manage to kill even a single zombie. :(
The graphics are simple and neat, so is the music. Overall after a bit of polishing in the player feedback department, it has potential to be a great game!

@Sabeurre Thanks for pointing out! The game is much more enjoyable with those controls. Went and upped my rating a bit! :)

As a lot of people said, I didn't understand the control at first but I found myself enjoying the game at the end. Nice work!

Cool concept, nice artwork & ambiance, a small tutorial can help to better understand cards and the controls could be a bit simpler, maybe by making the game totally playable with either keyboard or mouse. Keep up the good work

pretty neat concept. i liked the art style. i was confused on what to do first. a simple tutorial would be nice. the ghost movement was also neat.

@nidup Looking back on the controls, pure mouse could have been made fairly easily and would have made a lot more sense.

Thanks everyone for the kind words and I'm glad you could enjoy the game despite the struggle :D

Cool concept!

What Worked:
- Cards
- Genre Combination

What needs some polish
- UI elements (text) need to be more visible.
- The way you play a card is confusing. Works sometimes

Good job!

A really fun mix of beat-em-up arcade style with a card game! I enjoyed playing through and beating the boss (though I was on Easy it seemed the boss was still perhaps too easy).
