Nanonator by RAC-Games

[raw]
made by RAC-Games for LD 40 (JAM)

Update: Due to merging issues a few 3d models couln't be used in the jam version. We created a post-jam version with these models (which where made during the jam). This version also includes some minor bug fixes.

Post Jam Version: https://rac-games.itch.io/nanonator-post-jam

In this bullet-hell you become the bloodied hero of a child, a tiny robot, just nanometers in length that eliminates harmful microbia that threaten the young life.

How to play

Use WASD or the arrow keys for movement, space for shooting and shift for activating your shields.

Why are there so many developers?

This team is an open university gamejam group for everyone to participate. Our students are mainly from maths, physics and biomedical engineering. The course runs the whole year and everyone can drop in and out at any time. This also means that nobody in the team is a fullfletched developer, artist or anything relevant to game design. Many of us have to learn everything from scratch DURING the gamejams. Any questions on how this course is organized, just PM Knorz.

How it went

This was our third entry and this time it was the worst experience so far. The theme wasn't our favourite and non of us managed to take a nap before the jam started at 3.00 a.m. here in germany. Our idea was to make a bullethell in which the controls changed the more weapons you had. You could describe it as a mix of guitar hero and a bullethell. We took really long (over 24 hours) for a working prototype and ... it was really really awful. So we scrapped the idea and went down the path of a "normal" bullethell. One of our greatest issues was the lead of the team. Normally Knorz and jeb try to structure the group from beginning on, but we wanted to try a different setup this time. This didn*t turn out well, no one felt responsible and the communication was a mess leading to some tension. More on the in our postmortem ...

I love this ambientation for a bullet hell game! Some textures of the enviroment made me dizzy, but nevertheless you have done a really good job. Congrats!

PD: how can i see my score? :P

An actual intro sequence. Cool. I don't see the connection to the theme though.

A good game!

There are a few problems though:
* You can't skip the intro sequence
* No reset button after you died
* The shield doesn't last long
* Volume slider doesn't work

Also, the game is pretty generic, in my opinion.

Funny game and curious theme!
Something I found interesting is that every time you die the game is not reset, but it is marked by points. It hurts but not frustrating.
Some button to exit while playing?
Good good good! <3

really liked the intro and presentation. led really well into the game. loved the music and sound effects. graphics were also great. although the pulsating effect could have been reduced a bit - it really makes you a bit dizzy (as others have pointed out). otherwise really well done! good job :)

Cool bullet hell game, I think the player hitbox should be more highlighted.
The bloodcells confused me for the first seconds of the game haha, I thought I had to avoid them, but I figured it out fast enough =)
Nice work!

I also got confused by the bloodcells and tried to dodge them at first. And then I ignored the yellow projectiles... In any case, some of the patterns were cool, especially the boss.

Amazing game! Sorry that Ludum Dare 40 was such a horrendous experience :( But at least the game was great.

The game looks nice (if a little creepy at first glance), the controls are tight, the gameplay is very
enjoyable and the music is awesome! You all even took the effort to make an intro sequence.

All in all, this has been probably my favorite Ludum Dare 40 game so far! One last note, my score was 730

This game looks really cool! Especially I liked the background animation, falling blood cells, robot model and visual effects. Music is very suitable for the atmosphere of the game. Except that enemies in the form of green worms could look more interesting. I think that enemies should have health scales, but this is my subjective opinion. And enemies shoot too often, especially those that shoot in a straight line. Without the use of a shield, you can not kill them, you just have to stand and wait until it reloads. In general, it seemed to me that some packs of enemies shoot so many shells that they can not be passed without death. Anyway, that's a very good game! Congrats!

The background, the intro, the particle effects and the music is overall good. The gameplay is okay, but for me the game felt really unfinished. I would have preferred less content, and a more polished gameplay. But overall it is still a fine LD game.
