Yuri's Planties by yuripiano

[raw]
made by yuripiano for LD 40 (JAM)

Hi! This is my first ever "game" of any kind, so please keep that in mind :D

The "goal" is to survive a certain number of turns (5) while making sure that the plants don't over-reproduce. Plants will reproduce into adjacent squares and die when they reproduce (unless there's a plant adjacent to it already).

Gameplay Left click puts down a rock that will stop plants from reproducing. S advances to the next turn. When the turn advances, the plants will reproduce.

At the moment, there's no game over or win/loss screen, and you can place an unlimited amount of rocks....

BUUUUUUT you can pretend it's a functioning game if you limit yourself to placing 4 rocks and then pressing the S key to advance a turn!
So, 4 rocks, press the S key, 4 more rocks, etc.
Try to keep the plant count under the max number of plants allowed, or see what the least number of plants you can end up with is.

I'm not sure of the winning conditions?. This is a good start for a puzzle game. The art is nice.

The game is really fun if you limit yourself to four stones per turn. Awesome job!

Dead simple ... I like it. If you do limit yourself to 4 rocks, it's a pretty good puzzle / strategy game :)

I think even limiting yourself to 4 rocks, this is still pretty simple. A restart button would be preferable.

Yeah, a restart button would have been nice to add! As well as.. well... lots of things. ^^;
By the next jam, though, I should be a lot better at this (hopefully), so I can probably include something like a restart button! Or a game over screen... or "you win!" text... or... literally anything... ehehe... ^^;

Hmmm.. I'd like to try it, but it's not un-raring correctly. Would it be possible to provide a zip as well?

@sorlok It doesn't work if you go into the Builds folder and then run it? O.O
I'm sorry, I don't know how these things work, so I don't know how to help you ;3; I appreciate your willingness to at least try to play it though > . <

Good job on the art, I like how you even made the game icon a plant :seedling:. Interesting idea about blocking the spreading of the plants on a grid, I have never played anything similar to this. The game feels very logical, like a chess puzzle. I think this can be very appealing to many people.

My suggestion for next time, after you find a way to limit the number of stones the player can place, you could automatically advance the turn. I think it will help with the gameplay progression. Please continue to make games, I think you have a strong potential.

Aaaaah thank you guys so much ;////; I felt pretty bummed when I put this out, but seeing your support makes me feel inspired to try harder for next time!

@felixsoum Yeah, I'l definitely try to do something like that! I just didn't have the time/experience to do exactly what I wanted, but next time, I'll make sure I have something that functions a bit better!

5 turns, 4 plants :sunglasses: Nice idea for a puzzle game if you add the limitations and conditions to game, plus levels and objectives it can be great!

Nice puzzle game. It reminds me of the game of go.

That was a fun little toy (as we have to make thes rules ourselves ;) ) I have a sweet spot with the cellular automata games, so it worked very well with me. So of course, I would very much like to see an improved version of it ! (Other mecanisme, puzzles...)
