Evil Money by interpol

[raw]
made by interpol for LD 40 (JAM)

One day a simple man found out that his PC was stolen... Right behind his back. There was a little note from the thief: "If you want to see your pc again - bring 1.000.000". We don't know, why this PC was so important to him. Maybe there were some bitcoins. But we know that this man will do anything to bring his treasure back!

I tried to play your game, but I got the error below! Also, I noticed that when I clicked the Windows link, it brought me to the Linux download. When I clicked the Linux link, it brought me to the Windows download.

Very fun little stealth game. I ALMOST had enough to win! I really like the progress indicator between levels. I had to copy a UnityPlayer.dll from my game for it to work though. Might want to fix that ;)

You links are swapped. Linux in Windows and vice versa :)

UnityPlayer.dll is missing, don't delete it before you zip the folder :)

Warn me as soon as you send it again. Thanks!

Sorry! I fixed links and included the .dll.

UPD: It was my first build in the new version of Unity (2017.2). They've just added .dll split.

Hey, nice game! I like the mood of your game. jornal reports, etc. Looking pretty good! I didn't get quite well what dropping money does.

Also, your shadow are awesome, did you use 2DDL with unity? I'm looking to the same effect for other game but didn't tried nothing yet.

Also, if you can, try my game :) It's for local multiplayer, but you can have an idea what it is about playing alone :)

@feedlipe
No, It's a 3D game, so the shadows are default, because we have no time for writing custom pathfinding in 2D (and experience). But we really want to use 2DDL for cool 2D shadows.

But, the enemy's spotting FOV is very simple: raycasts + generated mesh on it with custom material. I think it's better to write a nice shader for that kind of purpose. I can suggest you to look in that direction to have the same looking effect!

Dropping money helps you to lose some weight (money slows you down) and you can distract an enemy if you drop some cash in front of him (only if he can't see you).

loved the little jokes and puns :-D also liked the setup of the story. I have one question though: how does he/she know where to bring the money in the first place? :-P doesn't matter though. fun game!

Hm, nice question! I think the thief is watching. And he knows do we have all the money or not. So, from my point of view, the thief will come to his house for trade (pc for $1M). If we only had more time, we would definitely add some cutscene at the end of the game.

Really well done. The controls are perfect and the art style works well for the game.

Really good quality across the board, especially with the humor. Found myself playing for way longer than I initially expected I would. Intuitive mechanics, almost no need for instructions.

I will never throw away my money.
Never.

If you opt to iterate further on the game (you should), some way to turn off security lights/cameras would add some additional fun and challenge (I initially found myself trying to figure out how to do just that).

Great job!

05. Dec 2017 · 02:14 UTC
Thank you, @primitive-concept. There IS a way to turn off cameras (sorta). The amount of them based on your previous heist. So, if you stole too much, there will be more guards and cameras. But you always have an option to adjust next level difficulty by sacrificing your money.

But your idea is good. Some good mechanics like in Monaco will be really nice. We didn't have so much time to implement complex tiers (we have only 3 difficulty tiers and 1 special tier with door), but we thought about some mechanics which will be based on player's playstyle.

Hey! thanks for the feedbak in our game! Your's is rly awesome! I wonder how you did the FOV because we tried to do it in 2D but we could not get anything...
🎤 interpol
05. Dec 2017 · 02:46 UTC
@capitanliteral I can suggest you the same technique I told feedlipe. For 2D you should definitely use custom shader and multiple raycasts. But if you have no experience with that, the perfect way for you will be creating 2.5D game. Why? You'll have all 3D lightning and shadows, but you will still be using sprites (with 3D colliders, of course).

The newspapers in between scenes are great!
Having view cones not project through solid objects is a really cool effect, and it fit in with the stealthy gameplay quite well!

Issues:
- I glitched through walls a few times while playing.
- detection is a bit wonky. Sometimes it would be delayed a second or two after I had moved out of vision, and with one camera I was able to avoid detection by standing in a certain place and not moving while it swept over me - standing still in other places didn't work.
- More of me being bad than anything, but I never figured out that you could distract guards by leaving money and dodging out of sight. maybe make that more prevalent in description / tutorial?

Feature Idea you've probably already thought of: it would be neat if the sound changed once you'd been spotted. The music did get a bit stale later on.

On the whole, a good time!

I absolutely love the delay between guard spotting you and starting the chase
It adds the feeling that he saw you, without paying attention to it, but then he realized

Overall, good game, but furniture colliders are strange and sometimes you can glitch in them.

About the money distraction: it may be in tips in loading screen (but not certainly, because they are random). We wanted to give the player some sense of exploration, when he finds some hidden mechanics!

Nice! I love the little extra work with the funny newspapers. After one round or two, you get used to the game mechanics (At first i didn't understand why i should throw my money away, haha :D ), but then, it becomes a fun and challenging game.
Once i glitched throug a wall close to a plant.
Really nice work!

Well, I may have spent too much time playing this game but i really wanted to complete it!

First of all, I fount the all star reference really funny. I did not really expect that.

Concerning the graphics, I liked the artstyle and everything fits pretty well together.
Concerning the audio it was great the music sounded interesting and reminded me of the pink panthern!

Overall I enjoyed this game and I had such an amazing time playing it. I became kind of frustrated though because I’m not that good and did not manage to get 1000000 dollar. It was addicting though. I’m totally going to come back to this game later. Thank you so much for this experience and good luck in the future!
Have an awesome day, and I hope to see you in the next jam!

Nice one! I really catched myself holding my breath on some occasions. It's really nice that you don't instantly lose once you are detected, I managed to get to my car with some people right behind me twice, which was really satisfying :D Also the transitional news were awesome :D

This is basically "The Swindle" ^^ Not sure if you know the game. If you didnt know that game, I bet it will be funny for you to play the swindle. The gameplay was really good and I liked it a lot. Nice little story which every gamer can immerse himself into (how dare they take the pc HOW DARE THEY). Maybe the restart button should be a bit faster when your dead. Also I wasnt sure what was going on when I got caught. Was I dead? Also is having money bad? I didnt see it. And show how many days you have left, creates tention.

Was fun to play :)

Great game. but I did not understand how to be with the alarm system? can I disable it? or is this a typical hold and run? It's funny that money slows you down, but you can throw them off. I threw money around the car in a few walks and then ran away from the guard, grabbed money on the run and left :)

Yes, the alarm automatically disables itself if you will hide from the enemies. They will lose you after 5-10 seconds, but they will be aware for a short time.

Hey its your first game jam too? Awesome. I love how addictive your game is!

I really liked the progress bar that showed you exactly what your goal was, how you could be greedy and still out-manoeuvre the guards and also the sound effect of picking up the cash. Fitting music too. You should be proud of making a solid game for your first jam. I feel the same way, we made a quirky little game called Althea and the magical fruit (https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/$53149) If you have a chance I hope you can give us your thoughts! All the best with your next game jam, I definitely can't wait for the next one :)

Nice game! Soft music and cute sprites, especially dog sprite, it's very funny! I think, that it would be more comfortable if the car was further from the entrance to the building. Because I accidentally finished the level a few times when I just ran out of the building to hide from the guard. Anyway, it was interesting to play. Well done!

I love this game! I love stealth games and this is a great example. Sneaking around is so much fun, figuring out the optimal path around the guards and cameras. The music is really nice and the newspaper headlines are funny. I wish there were a few more sound effects, like when guards are chasing you.

Thanks, @willowblade, we have no web build from the start because of Unity 2017.2 bug with Cinemachine. It was always crushing on a cutscene and we have no right to add or remove the content. So today the patch was released and we rebuild it for the web!

When I saw the vision sector of the guard partially occluded by the walls, I was impressed and immersed in my stealthy role as a thief! If you continue to develop this game, when I walked through a guard's vision sector, and I didn't hear or see a dramatic change, for a moment, I wasn't as immersed.

This game has a nice concept. Its not too innovative though. I liked the aesthetic of the graphics and the music of the game. Unfortunately, even though the gameplay was quite fun, it evidently lacked polish. First of all, there isn't a proper game over. Secondly, I sometimes stepped inside an enemy's vision and didn't get spotted. Also, the movement in the game, especially the enemy's movement, was very unrealistic as the characters slid when they moved. I also spotted typos in the game too. Finally, I don't understand why the game's resolution is so big. I would have preferred for the resolution to be smaller so I didn't have to use the scrollbars to look at a button. However, despite some flaws, I think this game is still pretty decent.
