Cowquest by papacheech

This is a game about Friendship. This is a game about Cows. This is a game about not blowing those friends up with bombs.

About

bowshortened.gif

NOTE: Everything about the game is hosted on the itch.io page. page on itch.io.

Cowquest is a simple game about defending your heard of cows, using a variety of weird resources and abilities. I think you'll quickly grow addicted.

The goal of the game was to make things exponentially tougher and more chaotic the more you progress, and the more cows that you are managing. Since they can poop explosives, things can get ... hectic when you have more friends!

Inspired by Spelunky, I based the mechanics off a simple set of physics rules. As it turns out, the possibilities within this system were pretty vast. When I ran out of arrows, I still had an option at my disposal:

Controls

WASD: Move

Mouse: Aim

Left Click: Use Item

Q: Drop

E: Pickup

Space: Throw Item

Mouse Wheel: Change Item

1-9: Item Hotkeys

Development

bowthrow.gif

Engine

I used Unity to make the game, and managed to get pretty far with their new 2D tilemapping tools making the destructible terrain. Check it out, the results were pretty good:

destruction.gif

Art!

For the sprites, I used Aseprite. I have a custom script to export my spritesheets straight to Unity, because my only gripe with the program is that the file system is kind of clunky. This saved me quite a bit of time. The tutorials I found here have given me so much good info and changed how I think about spriting, so check them out!

Sound?

I use Logic Express to make all my music. This little ditty just sort of popped into my head. I'd like to fix it up and put it on SoundCloud sometime after the jam. For the sounds, of course I used BFXR. It's a game jam, after all.

Changelog

1.0 First release for OSX, Windows, and HTML5! 1.0.1 Fixed issues where arrows wouldn't fire, and the bomb gophers didn't spawn. 1.0.2 Did some gameplay balancing and simplified the controls. 1.0.2 (macos) Fixed macos build to not use fullscreen. 1.0.3 Fixed known bugs and improved player collision to prevent entering level geometry.

Endnotes

I make a lot of games about cows. But I think this one is extra beefy. I hope you enjoy it! Please leave comments and feedback below and I'll gladly return the favour!

Nice game, I liked the inventory system you had implemented and the humour was great too. TO improve, I'd recommend looking at a better implementation of a collision system (you seem to just be moving them the opposite direction to what they were moving)

Cool game, the music is a little annoying but it fits the game well and the humour is on point

Pretty funny game. Feels good to shoot bad guys. I wish you could throw farther away the bombs.

Really funny game.Talking cows? The graphics and audio are really polished, great work on that. The controls feel a bit clunky and for some reason the character wont shoot down only up for me. Bombs reeeeally feel suicidal to me hahah I was not able to use them properly. Good job with this game.

Nice jobs, seems very polished for a ludum dare game.

@el-pepi good advice! I tried to keep the weights of objects "realistic" (if that even makes sense in this type of game) but in the future I will probably steer towards whatever feels best. Thanks for playing :)

I had fun with this one; shooting the bad guys was fun, but I didn't feel particularly attached to my cows. Other than collision detection being a little weird, and towards the end of day 12 my controls stopped working, the game worked perfectly--great job!

Everyone has been noting the same thing I'd say is the game's strongest suit; the humor. It's very simple but amusing and provides some character to what would otherwise be a fairly straightforward escort/object defense game. There are some odd behaviors in the physics but the game serves its purpose overall. Also, for being new to pixel art you've done a pretty good job!!

Wow, there's a lot going on here. I love how the cows talking was actually contextual, actually made me laugh out loud.

The combat is surprisingly good, I think I blew up a few cows and it made me sad when they got hurt and complained about it :( Lucky cows can't talk IRL eh?

thanks @leticinios ! Would love to see it in one of your videos some day :)
and @exezin , I think we would all be better off with talking cow friends like these.. Thanks for playing!

Thanks for the feedback everyone!
I have just released a quick patch, as I noticed that a couple people shared @muromets feedback! The controls have been updated to bind THROW to space instead of right click to avoid confusion. Further, some items default to throw when use. This makes throwing rocks way easier and more fun. Enjoy!

macOS version doesn't work. I can't click any of the buttons :\

Works on the web though and is very cool! I like the idea and the game itself is challenging in a good way. Btw I got my hands on a rock and couldn't throw it (bug?) I tried pressing space to do it.

hey there @dom ! Sorry you were having issues!
I have disabled the macos build for now until i can get home and resolve it. As for the throwing issue, i will look into it when I get home as I have not seen that before!

Thanks for the feedback everyone!

hey @papacheech: it seems that this is a Unity issue. I just experienced it in another game. Leaving the full screen fixed it for that game.

The humour in this was quality! Loved the sound, struggled with the arrow bug somebody mentioned above, but all the cow banter made up for it! Well done!

I liked it! I ended up shooting my cows a lot to see the funny things they said, and since there didn't seem to be anything bad that happened when I did. I didn't see any preview images before playing, so when I figured out I could blow up walls with bombs I felt clever :P Control-wise, I would like it if mouse scroll item selection didn't "select" equipment slots with nothing in them yet. Fun! Good job :D

Amazing game. It all starts with the very fitting costumization of the itch.io site, has a beautiful soundtrack, lovely animated sprites, and i adore the cow ^^ If somebody would show this to me i wouldnt believe him that this was made in 48 hours. You seem very experienced, keep up the great work, you have a realistic chance of winning.

What a cute game! I love the talking cows! Controls are a bit clunky and collision detection can be improved (I phased through the dirt walls a couple times). Music is great though, and the art is charming. Well done! :)

@sholf hmm I think that the WebGL version of the game could use some performance improvements.. ill do some more research on that tonight! Thanks for playing!

A very solid submission! Feeling like a "real" game, not a jam development. Pretty graphics (including animation), nice sound, quite fun to play. Humorous, too: the cow talk is great!

I had some trouble with aiming (maybe the collisions aren't fully tuned, maybe I am just a bad player). At one time, the timer stopped to count days and no more enemies spawned. Other than that, I found no bugs. Great job, I am impressed! :-)

I can hardly believe how polished this feels! I just wish I got a bit more feedback when I take damage, or a dodge roll. The difficulty ramped up suddenly.

Wow, this's quite addictive. Also it's nice to see item interactions like a bomb blowing up a ejecting another bomb way further blowing up after a short while.

I couldn't throw the arrows by themselves and sometimes the bow wouldn't fire. Also autoselect of the bow after throwing a bomb would be great.

Really glad I got around to play this game despite being quite busy. It was so well done and very fun to play. The gameplay was really intuitive and controls worked quite well but not sure if the pickup item control was necessary, as you could have just made it so you pickup items when you walk on them.

The bombs were also really fun and sometimes you could get combos throwing bombs on enemies who would blow up holding some projectile that would blow up other enemies :)

The music was also really catchy and made for a really good mood in this game. Awesome job!

Wow, I love cows, and they also say many funny things! Also I love sandbox arena with a lot of items in your game. But, I think, there should be some auto switch, when you drop rock or a bomb, to next similar item or a bow.
