Sure You Can! by sidewalksleeper

[raw]
made by sidewalksleeper for LD 41 (JAM)

sure-you-can

The Sorcerer King has vanquished all opposition. The only thing that stands between the Resistance and total destruction is an artificially made perfect warrior. The only problem is, this warrior doesn't know how to jump.

Thankfully, he still knows how to shoryken -- and who needs to do ordinary platforming when you can just dragon-fist all over the place?

CONTROLS: left, right, Z

Funny idea :) Might want to add options to skip the super slow intro or turn the music off though.

I agree with skipping the Intro. Otherwise cool game. I really like the pixel art

Cool idea but the controls are more frustrating than fun :(
Loving the pixel art though, and while a bit repetitive the music fits well :)

Yeah, unfortunately I was short on time and had to scrap the gamepad controls.
I had to scrap a lot of things, come to think of it :D

I think you nailed the theme, although I couldn't stand to do any more shoryukens after the third level  Good job

It seems, that shoryuken animation happens slightly after combo, so I often fall off the edge if I keep pressing arrow key after.

I love the concept idea! pretty fun but controls feel little bit unresponsive... still pretty great entry, well done!

I couldn't stop laughing and constantly falling into pits. I cant tell if I would prefer the music to not start over with my deaths, I kind of think that made it more funny but also more frustrating. Love the art, Love the music, and this whole concept is hilarious.

Hilarious and memorable idea! The intro cutscene was great, and the graphics are great all around. The gameplay got frustrating quickly though, even for me as a person who enjoys precision platformers. I quit on the upwards climb level. I think making the levels about half as long would keep them just as interesting while reducing frustration. Either that or adding checkpoints. I'd also consider adding an extra block to all the one-block ledges you have to jump off of. And it's counter-intuitive that some levels seem to require you to take damage. A restart button would be nice to have so I can restart once I've taken a lot of damage too. Anyways, aside from those things, you really nailed the presentation and the mood of your idea, good job! I love the title and the title graphic.

Definitely a creative and humorous idea. Control scheme is simple but the execution and timing makes it difficult to master. Really good feel with the audio, humor, and art. Great work!

Thanks for the feedback, everyone! :)

There is a final boss and an ending in this game, but both were quickly slapped together, so no hard feelings if you don't finish it.

I wish I had more time to polish things, but oh well. Such is the nature of Ludum Dare.

https://i.imgur.com/fA832o4.png this is where i give up hahaha, one thing you REALLY needed in this was a death counter xD I'd be around 50-60 at this point. Great job dude, love the art style and the premise!

argh thats a cruel game. Trying to pull those off in SF2 was always a weak spot for me. Also only made it to level 3 before my fingers couldn't take any more shoryuken. Interesting idea and a good take on the theme. Really nice pixel art, I liked the music choice too, but unfortunately had to mute it due to restarting at the beginning of the level when i was repeatedly dying 2s in.

That is the most fleshed out game I played until now! Graphics, humor, audio, everything. A beast of an entry. Only improvements I could imagine would be a shorter combo to jump (maybe cuppled with a difficutly setting) and that the music shouldn't stop on dying. Edit: for the love of god please leave the intro.

This game is amazing! Stunning visual and great puns really made it for me. I highly suggest adding a death count as @wrexialmt suggested and maybe a death sound effect. Keep up the good work!

Very hard. At first I was like...why isn't just pressing Z working and then I remembered I am an idiot. Fighting game combos and platforming do not mix. Very well done! It got easier when I figured out you could just spam the bottom arrows + z and it would just about work. So maybe a method to avoid spamming it? But overall a decent game! Congrats!
