Slice of Screen by Zirrrus

[raw]
made by Zirrrus for LD 41 (COMPO)

FPS + 2D Platformer

Play it here: https://zirrrus.itch.io/slice-of-screen (embedded WebGL and Windows standalone available)

The game is about experimenting. So just jump in and mess around for a bit.

Here are some hints: - try typical PC FPS controls(Mouse, WASD, Space) - right mouse button does something - Escape brings up a menu

This is probably the hardest game I have played this far, and maybe a little too much for my brain to handle, but it's also one of the most unique concepts I have seen. Good job!

really cool idea! It's fun to play around in such a strange perspective.

pros: I liked the 2D into 1D perspective, I really appreciated the tab function in the end to get the hang of it though. :)

cons: I bit too mutch for my brain to handle as well,

Good job!

This is so bizarre! Once I figured what was going on I managed to get up the stairs, and having to go backwards was too hard. Having the mouse inverted didn't help. I'm glad you added that cheat picture in picture, I wanted to see if what I was thinking was right.

An interesting concept and vision of the game! But there is not enough music.

This is an interesting idea. Unfortunately, I must be too dumb to figure it out, especially after the weekend crunch. Kudos for the most unique idea I've seen yet though.

I did it!

Honestly, I did have to go back and read the tutorial (although I didn't cheat!). Very trippy. Shame sometimes your collider scuffs up against walls which can make things harder to navigate. Very creative use of the theme.

this game is hard, really hard. i didnt understand what was happening in the normal perspecitve. and even with the cheating perspective i cant control it in a good way, the movement and aiming are hard by itself, and there is plataforming and enemies on top of that. but it was fun to play.

huge innovation. With a few small tweaks it could be more accessible. Maybe just show the player the 'cheat' view in a quick tutorial room (after a few moments of them trying to figure it out), and then take it away. Before that, I couldn't figure out turning (as saying "FPS controls" made me think moving the mouse left and right or using A or D would help turn). At least highlight the right-click turning more I think. Also the jump button doesn't always work when near walls so that added to the initial confusion. Overall great idea and I'd love to see how challenging it could be once it's easier to understand.

Bugs I noticed:
- in the tutorial is a typo - twice "will" (at least in the Web mode)
- in the escape menu you can actually click multiple times on the buttons to trigger the animation more than once

The 1D perspective was a bit confusing at first and I would't figure out the controls without the
tutorial.
The whole perspectives thing is really cool.
I am so sad that this game doesn't have any sound effects (f.e. for shooting) or music. It would give the game the
last bit of polish.

Good job!

Really cool idea, but without tab I got a bit confused. Minimalistic 1D visuals look pretty, but the minimap could use some polishing.

One of the more creative approached to the theme I see! Without the "cheat" function it was really hard to play for me because I still didn't have a clue what's going on even with the tutorial. After turning it on though it became clear what I was doing. Really really liked the theme approach, so good job on that :)
On a sidenote, the web version scrolling seems to cause some kind of bug to the field of view and it's really hard to aim. Keep it up, good work :)

Very interesting combination, even if it seems like a game made for aliens from an other dimension. The web version is pretty hard to play, due to the mouse controls. This is like 1D FPS and yeah, at first I had no idea what to do. It's hard to see how this could changed without losing the weirdness aspect, that makes it appealing.

wow super unique idea. I was not capable of following the 1D only mode, the minimap made it really fun through. Good job!

This was probably one of my favorite ones! I figured out what was going on (the description of the themes is well done and helps a lot), but I had to use the debug mode a few times to get to the exit. Still, I really enjoyed this, and it's probably one of the nicest and best-done theme combinations I've seen!

Wow I loved this so much! Playing this for the first time and figuring it out was so cool. I killed a ton of enemies and got to the exit but it was green and I didn't know I need to kill all the enemies. After not knowing what to do I went to look at the tutorial and debug mode. Seeing how the level really looks was pretty wild haha.

This is 100% the most original and innovative game in this LD! Great job!
