Card Coded is a submission for the 41st Ludem Dare Game Jam. the theme this round was: "Combine two incompatible game genres"

I decided to make a card platformer with my time. you play as bit, a computer program who is trying to escape being deleted by antivirus software by uploading himself to the net.

Dope game, beat all levels! I've seen there's a lot of card games in this LD, but this is the first one I played. And it was good. Took a bit to get used to controls. I was trying to play with arrows+space at first, but it's wayyy easier with number shortcuts. It's cool how you added flappy birds level, I enjoyed that a lot. Unlucky draws were pretty annoying when you just can't solve the obstacle with what you have in your hand, but they weren't too common I guess, shuffle helped a lot in those cases. Nice game.

Good job!

Whoa! The best LD game I've played so far. Amazing visuals, fun, theme. 5/5 overall!

This is awesome. I, too, tried to make a deck-building platformer. Yours is a much more polished, focused product. I'm seriously jealous.

Unlike a lot of games I'm seeing, yours actually showcases both genres about 50/50 by requiring strategic card usage, as well as platformer timing to succeed.

Everything fits the aesthetic great, and there is a ton of polish from the card animations to level-cleared-effect. Great job.

Gotta say, super impressed. The game is super polished, way more than most other games I've seen. It's a ton of fun to play, the visuals are amazing, and the music is great. The only thing I think is missing is a reset hotkey; it was kinda frustrating needing to wait until it reset you if you run out of cards.

@Bookworm31 A reset hotkey would have been a great idea actually, I'm surprised it never crossed my mind. thanks for the feedback!

Yeah, this was great! I'm on level 6 right now, and really glad you added the shuffle card types in there. Level 4 took me a lot of tries since it was pretty tight and an unlucky draw made it hard (or impossible I think?) to complete the level.

I also liked how attack cards can help you move and how there's no friction in the air so I can use one move card and then just keep using jump cards :)

@Herman great to hear a lot of those design choices payed off, thank you for taking the time to leave feedback!

I think it would've been better if you were able to use the cards by clicking on them since it's difficult to go from a movement card to a jump card if they are 2 apart. Great game either way tho

@spthiel totally agree, unfortunately mouse input was causing some issues I didn't have time to sort out. did you by any chance try using the numbers 1-5 on your keyboard as an alternative control style?

I liked it a lot! I couldn't figure out how to use the switch-card, so i gave up :/
The controls are kinda hard. I found my self more or less just button-mashing when trying to jump and move at the same time.
But anyway, nice idea, and pretty fun gameplay. 3.5/5

It is a fun game, with good ideas. Like @spthiel I think mouse oriented controls would have been more intuitive and easy, as most of the difficulty of the game come from the somewhat hard to master controls.

I already managed to get past a few levels, and will try again later to get a little further and see the end of the game.

I like the cute little main character. He looks so happy when he jumps.
The mechanics of the game are quite hard to use.

For what it's worth, I approve of this game. The concept is well done and it plays very well.

Granted, I'm terrible at platformers, so my performance wasn't helped by the controls changing under my fingers as I executed each command... but that's one of the charms of the game, so I posit my failure to my inability rather than blaming the game.

As mentioned previously, a reset button would be nice since I could definitely tell when I had no chance of finishing the levels. That said, good job with this game.

Really cool game, well executed. I also had a problem with the switch card seemingly not working, but I really like the idea. You should keep working on this and develop it further, it was a lot of fun!

This LD has been tough for me: I've never played a deck-building game and for most of the card-based entries I don't understand what is going on. But I get it now! This game was fast paced (for the idea) and my choices felt more purposeful. I feel like this game might be my gateway drug to card games xD

Great job ! For me this is the best card based game i've seen so far on ludum dare !

I really liked the fact that you have to take time to plan your actions before acting at the 3~4 last levels. Or the jump level when you have to see wich of your card will be a jump as fast as possible before falling on the spikes, this was great level design with a great concept !

The game is also quite well polished ! I just regret the amount of level (I made a platformer too and level design was very time consuming for me too. So i think this is hard to do more in 48h)

Oh gosh I played your game last weekend and couldn't find the page to rate you because I didn't think of saving it. And here it is!

I had a lot of fun playing Card Coded. This mix of genres is really cool and well managed. Having to use the cards at the right moment to be able to get to a platform is very interesting. I hope everything will go well for the development of Card Coded!

Everything is as polished as possible for the given time - graphics, sfx, level design, .... Impressive !!
