Lice Hard by cptalbertwesker

Head lice are no laughing matter, if you don't attempt to eradicate them as soon as you spot the first one then you'll have an infestation on your hands, at this point you might as well throw away your child* so here's your crash course!

A nymph louse will hatch from an egg around 1-2 weeks after it is laid, once it has hatched it will take around 8-9 days to become an adult louse.

As an adult, a louse will lay up to 10 eggs every 24 hours. When the louse has been alive for around a month it will die.

Adult lice are the easiest to spot, but lice are quick, so you'll have to perform fast strokes through he hair to catch them.

Eggs are lying in wait to hatch, but they latch onto the hair with a glue like substance, so perform slow strokes to catch eggs.

Picking up these critters is dirty work, so make sure you wipe any remains on some tissue or you risk putting any captured lice back into the hair.

Now! GO ERADICATE THOSE HEAD LICE!!

Apologies for the gross photo of my head, I can however guarantee there are no headlice in it! So it's not as gross as it could be.

I put Lice Hard together in Game Maker Studio using GIMP for art and Audacity for audio.

This is probably the most fun game I've ever made, it features GAMEPLAY, actual GAMEPLAY!!

All controls are carried out with the left mouse button.

It is purposefully tricky to spot the eggs and lice, as with real-life headlice (gotta have some realism in the game).

So-o-o, I just played a game about head lice, right? I need to reevaluate my life for a second. Meanwhile, the wall of text is just unreadable. A few simple tutorials would solve this in a moment. Love the attitude though.

@zinkler haha yeah you probably should reevaluate your life... but because I made it I should definitely reevaluate mine!! Yeah I was going to go with just showing you the controls and that was it, but then I wanted to add the science of how much of a mess head lice can be :D
@drfallos it really makes you feel itchy!

I have to admit, when I saw the game, I had to laugh. This is a pretty unique idea... congrats. The help screen was a bit hard on the eyes, but the concept is easily understandable.

We had the same sort of idea for this jam! If you get a chance play my game, Aaah, Crabs! It's gross & disturbing too. https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/40/aaah-crabs

Good job though, and thanks for all the info about lice. I need to go take a shower now. LOL!!

This game made my head itch! The first time I didn't read the instructions and failed hard. After reading them I eradicated everything right away. A very interesting take on the theme and a solid compo entry. Congrats on the actual gameplay! :D

I did not think that a game about head lice could be fun, but surprisingly it is! Good job! :D

Ahh, can't stop scratching! And they spread so fast! Not sure if I fully grasped the controls...I usually clicked-and-dragged a bunch, then let go and some stuff would suddenly disappear. I love the humming and little sound effects, very fun design overall :)

A pretty easy game. Controls are a bit counter intuitive to me... ((Maybe because I was never hunting lice before)), but once I got hold of them the game turned out to be pretty beatable... even though I had a pretty bad infestation going on while I was figuring what to do.

So many nostalgia points right here   :joy: :joy: ! It's got a lot of charm and is certainly unique in it's take on the theme. I liked the little noises the lice made; I think that really helped sell the game.

Well, this is the most fun I've ever had with lice, so congratulations? But seriously, this was a very interesting take on the theme and was pretty well executed. You hit the right balance of "simple to understand but difficult to master." Forcing the player to consider the speed of combing adds an interesting dimension to this.
