Hanoi - City of Scooters by mshopf
Welcome to Hanoi, the city of scooters and insane traffic.
This is the very first MASSIVELY SINGLEPLAYER ONLINE game.
This game, of course, mixes Singleplayer with Massively Multiplayer Online games. Sort-of.
You're playing against other players in the net. But the other players are not playing against you. What the !@#$ does this mean? Well, try it and you'll see... There is absolutely no AI involved, all opponents are other players!

Your job is to survive the insane traffic of Hanoi. It's early in the day, and the traffic will only get worse over time. Luckily, as you live here you have a very good intuition, where drivers will probably go. The other drivers also have a good intuition, and will warn you if you're in their way.
Hanoi - City of Scooters is a HTML5 web game written with phaser with a node.js / express based server, both client and server written from scratch, with some leftovers from my last Ludum Dare projects.
It's best to be played with Chrome (also tested in Firefox).
Graphics and Sound are not of my strongest points; I dedicate this game to XKCD, the famous Nerd Web Comic.

@jimbly: Yeah, as I'm (partially) working with node.js for a living, it's the easiest part ;-)
@special-bonus: The oncoming traffic is chosen completely random - it will probably better after some more people have played the game. But I also should probably nuke mostly straight paths on the server. You also have some good ideas - some milestones would really be motivating! I also wanted to add a road or a sidetrack, but time ran out in the end...
Phrasing it as "massively singleplayer" game really caught my attention and seeing the way you executed it was really great. Making you play offline against other past players was a great twist for the theme. Congrats! For me, the way you handled and executed the theme is the gold of your game. You sold me.
For the gameplay itself it could be more engaging. Only moving around at regular speed is a little monotonous. BUT! The arcade style of the game really adds to it, making it quite addicting, specially once you know the other cars are players.
Also, making it a web game really facilitate playtesting <3
Solid entry! Good job!
Creating an online game for a jam is a risky decision. And you succeeded with this. Just curious, does Randall
Munroe know about this game? =)
P.S.: crushed into myself... well, I've always suspected myself as the one who's ruining my life and now I have the evidence. =)
I love these little "multiplayer" games and also wanted to implement some node.js in my game. But time run out and at the end I just implemented a simple Highscore. (https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/rogue-race if you want to check it out ;)
@albuquerque: I had tons of ideas to include to the game to make it less monotonous, but it's the same as always: time ran out...
@yngvarr + @lereveur: I didn't have time to tell Randall yet, but I will! And yeah, it's strange to run into oneself while playing
@brillie-phan: Can you tell me your browser (and version) and your OS?
@groggi: It'll take a little time, but eventually I'll try all games of those who helped me improving my game with their comments :kissing_smiling_eyes:
@stark: Ouch :flushed: Indeed, it does - somehow I didn't recognize that. I guess it's something about the font, will try to fix it... Thanks for letting me know!
 What I loved
* The concept was funny
* The background music fitted really well
* The controls felt smooth
:thought_balloon: My thoughts:
* Naming it a "massively singleplayer" game really caught my attention and seeing what you did with it made it really cool
Really unique & epic entry!
Anyway, good job for your game, definitely memorable !
@toulou: your movements are recorded 20 times a second, every 10 seconds the accumulated path is sent to the server. For every opponent a random path is fetched from the server. Data is runlength delta compressed, that's not much but better than nothing. So in theory you can run into yourself if the path 20 seconds ago is randomly selected :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:
@stark: I wanted to fix the game for firefox today, now I realize it just works :astonished: - I have no idea why it didn't work two days ago...
My top score is 80 - got it the first time I played and never managed to top it later.
There are a lot of bad drivers out there! People are driving like crazy! :)
Additionaly the Anonymous Coward default nickname is just a great idea.
The only thing that frustrated me was that when I made a mistake and had to restart, I had to wait some time before getting back to high & bidirectional traffic. I wish I could have dropped instantely in the intense part but eh!
Graphics are simple, yet it didn't bother me that much. The fun was here! Nice entry!

I would have loved a score and high-score system in this game. Going against other LD jammers is always fun.
The graphics are cute, I like the hand-drawn art style very much. The sound is fine, although the random car noise sometimes goes left to right instead of right to left but overall the sound effects give the game a more realistic atmosphere.
One complaint: sometimes when I am at the bottom of the screen I get hit by something even though it is outside the screen area. That is really annoying.
Overall a nice game, keep up the good work! :-)
@Yozamu: I have to admit, the idea about the "Annonymous coward" is not from me - I had seen this elsewhere  I also thought about multiple lives, so you can get a bit further into the challenge, but in the end I just forgot about that
@JackLeHamster: The opponents are former runs of other players. So in the past somebody moved his scooter through the traffic exactly the way the van was now running down the street, right into you
@Blinkenlights: Could you send me a screenshot and the browser version you use?
@gonutz: There is a highscore, but just a single score. I admit, having a highscore list would be better. The sound hasn't been fine-tuned, so there is definitely room for improvement. When you're hit by somthing at the bottom, it's a driver that was on the top edge of the screen and went further up - the screen wraps around. I wasn't so happy about this concept, but the game was impossible to balance otherwise...
