Robo Power by jahndis

[raw]
made by jahndis for LD 39 (COMPO)

Screen1.png

You've been sent to restore power to a town that has been without power for days!

Program your robots to navigate obstacles and carry power blocks to the power deposit platform. Otherwise, you'll have to contend with the town's ornery mayor...

Tools Used: - Framework: Phaser - Graphics: Aseprite/Gimp - Audio: Caustic 3

EDIT: Updated a couple lines of code to make the robots move faster and to fix a couple display issues. Shouldn't be a significant enough change to affect any judging ;)

Nice puzzle logic game, simple to pickup and fit the theme via story and game play.

I clicked play on the gamejolt html link and it says I need to pay at least $1 to play?

It is always nice to see when someone invest time to make plenty of levels(I failed to do it this time).

A solid puzzle game, interesting and long enough to play. Good job, can't even point on any flaws.

Really cool game. I love programmed movement board games and this scratched the same itch. Good job.

Neat little game, good use of theme. The soundtrack is very suiting. Only possible improvement would be graphics, but hey, its the Compo :)

Very well done

Brilliantly done. My only feedback would be to increase the playback speed so there's less time spent waiting :) Good job!

I really love the puzzle mechanics in this and how they build upon each other. It never felt too difficult, as I always felt that it was just my own logic being the problem rather than the game being obtuse. The feeling of solving a puzzle that you got stuck on is very satisfying too!

Can't forget the grumpy mayor, I enjoyed him a lot as well! :)

Very innovative approach to the theme. Fun puzzle game, and humor to boot. Took a second to figure out that I had to drag the commands to the queue, but then it made sense. On my screen, the commands overlapped the "Available Commands" text, but I still got the idea. I like the puzzle idea that didn't seem like it was a clone of most other puzzle games. Thank you for the game and entry. Well done, and congratulations!

Really great job! Lovely aesthetic, clever puzzles, great use of the theme! I really like that you are basically programming the robot - it's a very unique input method. Best game LD93 game I've played yet

The puzzles in this were really well designed and the forced looping made it really interesting! I just wish there was a fast-forward option like in Space Chem.

It is a fantastic puzzle game with humour and which stick to the theme of LD39. Maybe I had a technical pb but no sound for me. Music and SFX would be a nice add to this addictive puzzle game.

I got a few levels in, then it got hard or I got too tired. The register programming to get where you need go was a nice puzzle mechanics. It was a bit odd when I dragged around instructions, I would have wanted the thing dragged over and occupied register to remove the existing, rather than the one I dragged being removed.

Nice puzzle game! I whish the robot would execute the tasks faster and I really like the character talking in between levels

Congrats on the entry!

really loved the mayor's crappy attitude :D :D :D :D
Would have liked a speedup button, even lemmings added one eventually :P
Great puzzle though, I love programming robots, I wish it was as easy in real life...

I found the puzzle mechanic in this game to be very cool. It's neat how you have to program out a short little function that is supposed to execute multiple times in order to achieve your goal. It could seem a bit daunting with how many different combinations are possible, but it was always very satisfying to finally figure the solution out. I like how many different moving parts you have along side one another as you go along, and I'm impressed by the sheer variety of mechanics that all work so well together. On the other hand, I feel that those mechanics are introduced too quickly. You need more intermediary puzzles to ease players into new mechanics if you're going to have so many. That being said, I did eventually figure out even some of the harder puzzles, so it's not like the game's impossible, and, as I said, it was really satisfying to get that solution right in the end. Moving on, the visuals are very charming. The little robots are expressive and the mayor character is pretty silly. I will say that there is a level where there is a gap in the middle of the grid that was difficult to detect because it blended into the rest of the grid, but that only happened in one puzzle. Other than that, I don't have any problems with the visuals. Overall, this is a very well made puzzle game with a strong core mechanic which evolves over time. I feel that this could be expanded into a pretty strong, full game without even having to add many new puzzle mechanics, just by providing the intermediary puzzles that will ease players into the game. But, even with the current, steep difficulty curve, I thoroughly enjoyed playing this game. Nice work!

This was a great puzzle game! And the graphics were super nice as well. The mayor was nice, he was included just enough to be a good break from the levels.

A really well made and charming game. Great puzzle design and I love the cut-scenes. The only thing I would change would be the move speed.

Wow very nice! I love the mayor but the main part is that you've done an amazing programmation game. The last puzzles are quite hard. Well done

Nicely done. I thought the mechanics worked well together, the looping thing is one I had not seen before in similar games. For some reason it took me a little while to figure out i need to drag and drop the instructions up instead of just clicking on them, and also agree that maybe its best to introduce each mechanic element more slowly to be sure the user understands. Liked the inclusion of the mayor to give some humour and narrative. Good job

Really nice awesome game idea, I like the mechanics of simple programming of the robot. It is challenging, but fun. Really nice style and music, which creates amazing mood in the game. Definitelly one of the best games I've played so far.

Good entry! The graphics were simplistic but I especially enjoyed the color choices. The music was suitible and the little screens in between with the mayor talking added a little bit of character (I will say an option to skip them would be nice though so a player can get right into the meat of the game without as much padding). The puzzle mechanic was easy to understand but it definitely got me thinking. The levels you designed all seemed pretty good and I'd definitely like to see an expanded version with more mechanics because this has potential. Overall, good entry!

Great game! Glad someone else went with programming drones ;). Especially on the last level, I wasn't clear on the rules of exactly when a drone would hand things off to another, and I had 3 drones on the same spot, one dead, one with a power pack, one giving energy, and just had to randomly swap things around a bit until, by chance, the one I wanted seemed to get the power pack. Other than that level, they were all nicely designed so I felt kind of clever for figuring them out.

I really liked the graphics! It did feel a little bit slow to playback. I have never really played one of these types of games, so I didn't realize how the commands looped and I was confused why he kept going. I thought he was just automatically driving it to the drop-off point. Once that clicked, I enjoyed the puzzles and thought it was a great compo entry!

The humor is good and the graphics are sweet. The robots' animation is simple and enjoyable and the overall idea is well thought out. I found the music to be a little too loud and had to turn it down quite a lot but the music itself was good. I'm on the fence with the whole concept from drag-and-drop the commands, perhaps a "click" based gameplay would be better and less tedious especially since I cannot just use WASD to move (which i understand the whole point of the mechanic is to plan your moves correctly and that's cool). Great work :D

Fantastic puzzle game with a great use of the theme. Graphics are clean, between-level dialogue is great and the music is great for some robot-puzzling action. Always fun to see robot programming games!
