Pyre of Vigil by Teapoly

[raw]
made by Teapoly for LD 43 (COMPO)

It's a card game that you need to burn cards for energy to play cards, and enemies attack your deck.

It's also a story about sacrifice. A ghost cat need to protect its old friend from angry ghosts, at the cost of its soul.

screen1.png screen2.png

Drag cards left to use them, drag cards right to burn them.

Soul is your deck, draw cards will also reduce Soul.

You need to defeat 6 enemies to win.

If fire or soul(which is your deck) reaches 0 the game is over.

This game is simply too cute!
Really nice graphics and sound, sweet story
The effect of cards feels a little confusing at first

This is a well done card game mechanic for a 48 hour game jam. Nice job!

I liked the music that was in the actual battle, but not the music of the intro.

Just a couple of critiques on the gameplay:
I got confused a couple of times with the buff cards. It was confusing that I had to drag them onto the enemy to play them, naturally I was inclined to drag them to myself, which burned them.
The mechanics aren't communicated super well, it could use a tutorial, though I understand how that can be difficult in a game jam.

Overall, nice job, I had fun playing it! The difficulty seems to be calibrated well too, as I finished the game with only a few cards left.

Great job on the graphics and sound. Mostly, I just wanted to pet the corgi ;-) As qtm noted, the cards, along with knowing how/when I ought to use each one to get an optimal payout felt a bit confusing. But, regardless, I still had a fun time playing. Nice work

It took me a bit to figure out what I was trying to do (after I burned all my cards for several turns in a row), but once I did I really enjoyed the gameplay. I love the play vs burn mechanic. The music is great. Really nice aesthetics.

Like the mechanics of the card game, and the graphics are cute. The only issue I had was that once I got to the boss the deck was shuffled such that there were no attack cards, just buffs and green cards. I couldn't actually make a hit. Either you could generate a stacked deck, or write logic that ensured a hand had at a minimum a few attack cards (i.e. mulligan). You would possibly need to swap some cards out if the player got into the same position I did.

Really fun game that fits well with the theme. Kept wanting to go at it again and again to see if I could win. My only real complaint it that your deck almost feels stacked against you sometimes where you dont get any buff cards till the bottom of your deck. Probably could be eliminated with some sort of mulligan system for your starting hand.

Its amazing what you did in fourtyeight hours. I really like the music track you have in the background its simple and thematic, but doesnt grate on your ears like some loops.

Soundtrack is really awful, but another one is so nice, first game to give the maximum from me. Really enjoyed this doggy.
Is there bug, that enemies hp is their attack and attack is hp? Because when enemy had 6 hp, i receive 6 dmg when turn ends.
Also, i have no idea how +1 ATK for ghost works, on skills, not punching on the end of the turn, yes?

It has a nice duality in the choice of how you play. Well done for the short time to do this!

Really nice and fairly balanced for a card game in a gam jam. Good story, great art, and just fun to play. Made it out on my first try with only 2 health left, but that made it feel all the better :)

Wow! Everything about this game is amazing! The graphics, the little backstory, the music & sound effects. The card game mechanics are very well done. Due to a very wide variety of different cards the game stays interesting for a long while. I was really bad at first but after some time I got the hang of it and managed to beat the game. Felt so rewarding!

The game is a little confusing at first but gets easier as you learn how to play it. It's also very cute but the music could've been better imo

Cats. Cats is always nice. And dogs. A card battle game is always very ambitious for LD, but I'd say you delivered well!

It's a bit complex for a LD game (don't have much time to learn everything), so I definitely didn't understand all the details.

Such a cool, cool game!
You did everything right, didn't you?
The graphics, the music, the challenge... Very well done!
It took me a while to kill the boss but damn was that rewarding!
Well done!

Thank you for your information in description how to play (using left and right side). This game is well designed, I really like it. Your graphic is so sweet, I love this doggie and our protector cat spirit! And of course these all brutal cats <3 Good job!

Well designed card game ! I like the mechanism that a card can be either used or burned to gain energy. It's pretty cool, and it has potential to build something based on the prototype. Although the cards needs to be balanced in my point of view (Clearly the cards draw in the last turn is way powerful than the previous turns). After all, it is a great jam game !

Interesting music! The particle effects and art are very cool, and the gameplay is relaxing. I really liked how to implemented the theme. The game was challenging for me, but I got it down after a number of tries. It forced me to think more carefully about each move I made and to balance the use of cards/sacrifice. The little storyline at the beginning of the game is cool too :) You did very well with this.

I won :confetti_ball:
