Blob Attack by AdiH

[raw]
made by AdiH for LD 42 (JAM)

Our first game jam.

Objective: Collect all the 4 hidden chests on the surface in order to increase your ammo. Then go through any of the 3 portals (grey doors) and destroy all the blobs by placing your blocks to surround them before they reach 100.

Ver 1.1 Changes - Fixed a critical bug that prevented us from having 100 blobs spawn and crashed the game, so now we can have 100 instead of 30 and some other bugs. - Changed some graphical aspects and added cooldown indicator (the cooldown was in the game but there was no indicator). - Added instructions.

Ver 1.2 Changes - Tweaked difficulty: initial block ammo changed from 12 to 4 and Greater Blob has an extra layer of blobs around him.

CONTROLS

In game: - A, D: Move left/right - Left click: Place block - Right click: Remove block - Spacebar: Jump - W: Interact (Use portal, open chest)

In screen: Spacebar: Next screen

The Jumping mechanics were pretty good and the idea behind the boss at the end was interesting but I was pretty confused about what to do most of the time. Maybe tweaking the game so you have to trap other enemies too would be interesting :)

I feel like this game would be a lot of fun if I knew what the heck i was doing. If the game play mechanics and objective were explained then this could be a much more playable game.

The movement feels pretty good, however, when it comes to placing the blocks, it feels a bit weird. I had issues with fps drops as well when trapping the boss. Nice idea though!

The music is nice, it gives a sense of rush when you are in the enemy zone, the graphics are cute, but I was very confused in what to do, the bullet boxes hitbox is not so nice and the bullets don't spawn correctly, sometime you click and it doesn't spawn. The idea behind the spreading thing is interesting though.

Game is indeed a bit confusing, but I felt like the game mecanic was quite fun ! It felt a lot like playing a minimalist GO game during enemy fights. Graphics and music were okay, they gave enough feedback for the player to understand what he should and should not be doing (water is death in jumping game, boss' music felt indeed like a rush). I feel like more feedback on the game would be a good thing if you keep working on it. Good job !

Jumping felt good, the spritework is cute and not bad for a jam game, however I was very confused whether I won or not? I managed to find all the chests, and surrounded the blob thing with the blocks, and then I just saw a screen with 'exterminated' on it? Was that a game over screen, if so what did I do wrong? The whole thing needs a bit more polish and could really do with some more game feel (aka 'juice' - there are some great videos on youtube about this subject) but you have some interesting concepts for a 2d platformer that show you have the potential to become better. Keep making games!

@historymaker118 Haha, no, "Exterminated" means you exterminated the blob. There's another game over screen that does say "Game Over". Yeah, we took all the feedback that we were given and we are currently doing bug fixes as well as improving the gameplay (in particular on the blob and block placing response) and we will be adding an instructions/controls screen since so many people are confused about our game. And now I see we'll also have to make clear who was exterminated. (-u-') Thanks for your feedback. This was our first game jam and the game was still so bug ridden on the final day that we thought we wouldn't make it in time but we somehow made it. We learned a lot about Unity and gamedev with this event, so I hope that for next jam we're working together on we'll make a way better game.

Really cool idea and the audio was very fun, matching the gameplay. It was a little bit annoying when the box (showing where a tile would be placed) didn't follow the mouse very well and the text on the game over screen was small and hidden behind more text. Overall, great entry, had a lot of fun playing.

It took me a while to understand how to eliminate the blob. once I got it, it took a few seconds and I was presented with a winning screen.

The game has a relatively large world to explore, but nothing to do in it other then get redundant blocks to stop the blob, that, as far as I understand, are not needed anyway.

It feels to me like many disparate ideas went into the design, but they don't gel together in a coherent experience.

good game i liked it! After i eliminate 01 blob the game is ended : ( and i wanted to play more. This is good. I suggest you, if you continue this project, able for the player to beat more blobs.

Controls feel decent, I like the art direction and the idea of having to trap enemies to stop them from spreading but I feel the execution was lacking in that there is barely any challenge. Maybe I was missing something but there wasn't any point during the fight where I felt threatened at all.

This could be solved by having multiple blobs spawn from different corners or decreasing the block capacity/making the cooldown more punishing.
Again I might be missing something here but I also feel the segment in the beginning doesn't really have any point and just worsens the issue of the second part being too easy.

@folex70 @pm2k Okay, we just tried to fix that in the 1.2 patch, so you can give it a go if you want.

Nice little platformer game! I like the pixel art side of the game! I think the game lacks a bit of intuitiveness but as soon as I understood what to do it was very fun! Some visual feedbacks would make the game even better in my opinion! Great job! :)

By the way please feel free to leave us some feedbacks on our game!

I like how the transition works between "ok lets platform to find the blocks" to "ok lets puzzle to clear this shit". After 2 runs I managed to understand the concept without just flat out dying xD. I could easily see this mechanic polished up and refined into a seriously good game. Good job! :D

Liked the look of the game but I sometimes found it frustrating when trying to remove and place blocks

@merpader There is a cooldown but maybe it is too long.

This was a short game, but I really enjoyed the concept. Using a depleting amount of space to eliminate the threat. Nice interpretation!
