SSSS by PlusMinus

[raw]
made by PlusMinus for LD 41 (JAM)

Control your crew using the bottom panel.

You can gather resources from asteroids.

Weapons only work if you have a unit assigned to the armory (7th button).

Modules don’t work if they are red. Repair them.

You can build additional guns after upgrading armory.

Without oxygen crew will die in about 10 seconds. No timer, sorry :) To generate oxygen you need working module and water.

If your locks are down, crew can’t go to or from space. They can die there too!

You win if you complete the main quest.

You lose if Ship HP goes down to 0 or if your crew is dead.

There is a hint about best tactics in comments, but try to play first, please. Hint is marked with @everyone.

This game has a pretty good feel, and reminds me a little bit of FTL.
I found it confusing to figure out how to play, which made it challenging to get very far.

The art was my favorite aspect of SSSS, but you've opted out of being rated in that category.

Sacrificing a tutorial was a bad idea, it makes difficult to understand what to do. However, the game is fun! Concept reminds me good old days of playing FTL, music and visuals fit each other and build a mood of the game. Don't stop creating!

btw, is this my system's misbehaviour or a bug?

The graphics are gorgeous! And the gameplay looks fun and rich, but the lack of explanations made it really hard to apprehend.

@Yngvarr Yet another bug :D

It's not like we sacrificed it, we just had a working build 3 hour before jam's end. But it had no graphics at all. If only we had another developer to implement graphics. We have complete animations for pretty much everything, but I'm too slow with UI.

Next jam we will be smarter with planning.

Well this one has really great potential, but after 3 tries I still couldn't quite understand what the rules are. It would be aswesome if you could atleas make a static image with text explaining the rules and all the icons. Really wanna play it properly :)

Awesome graphics! I really like the overall look of the spaceship. The concept is nice, but a tutorial would help. You should just right a short text with more details on how to play since you didnt have time to make your tutorial. I hope you will take some time to make an updated version, this is a cool concept !

I have no idea what I'm doing, but the game is gorgeous! Some mouseover tooltips would go long way here. Top GUI bar is only visible in fullscreen. That can easily be missed.

I seem to have no SFX, but there is SFX slider in options.

Love the Graphics and the sound.
There is some issue with anti aliasing, but it still looks great-

The lack of tool-tips or a tutorial makes it rather hard to understand what the buttons are supposed to do. I restarted several times and still have no idea what some of them do.

One of the best graphics i've seen so far. The game is really complex and has a lot of feature, but it need a tutorial to understand it. You should try to do an update of your game with a little Help ( i pressed H but it's not enough) , to boost your game

Music is also super nice and suit the theme very well

Maybe this game is too complex for a game jam. It needs a LOT of technologies to work out and be stable. I would recommend doing a "minified" version of this ^.^

Great jobs : )

Loved the level of polish, especially the music. Found the gameplay really tough though. I'm struggling to see where the theme fits in. It seems like it's FTL with a different skin, which in itself is an awesome achievement for a weekend game jam and I'm in awe of what you achieved. But boats in space seems more like a natural fit for FTL's gameplay, rather than something that it should be incompatible with.
skigfx
26. Apr 2018 · 21:24 UTC
@goffmog incompatible genres here is side-scroller and a RTS. Maybe our side-scroller part is not very clear :D. Also, FTL is a great game, but we were trying to make something truly different. We wondering how it happens, that SSSS if so close to FTL, and thats a big honor to us, that you find it very similar.
🎤 PlusMinus
26. Apr 2018 · 21:27 UTC
@goffmog yeah, the gameplay needs better interface, and tutorial, and tooltips, but we had no time for it. so it's hard to understand, but when you do, it's a fun game imo :)

@everyone
if you got here, you probably played it already, so I won't spoil anything. Best tactics is to assign people to 2 7 and 9th bays, the 2 others should mine 24/7. There is a chance to find a surviver on asteroid, he should mine too. Make sure u always have 10 metal to repairs. If you have metal, but no water - upgrade O2 gen. else don't waste metal. upgrade your weapon first to tier2, then if u have enough metal, upgrade armory and build second weapon blaster. if it's >25% upgrade your repair bay.. I should have called it hull? and shields. then it's easy win if you won't be totally unlucky with resources.

It looks awesome. I had fun playing for a couple of times but I still only understand less than half of what is happening. More indicators and tooltips would be really really great. The art is awesome and music is nice. Some sound effects would be especially great here. However, I really love the idea and would really wish for a more finished version. Great job.

Woaw, the game is very beautiful, congrats on pulling so rich pixel art in the limited time frame! I love the music too!

The game itself is interesting too (it reminds of FTL), but it take some time to learn how to play. I guess it could have been easier to understand if you added some "text tooltip" over ever icon :).

Congrats on the though, it really has the potential to get pushed into a full fledged game!

Really awesome game!
I needed a couple tries until I understood the gameplay and what to do, but once I got it, it was very fun!
It seemed very difficult and complicated at first, but I quickly got acquainted with the main game loop.

Dying was always a bit of a surprise, as I didn't pay much attention to the health bar. Something like it changing its color to red when nearing death would have been helpful, but that's not necessary anyway if you just pay attention to it in the first place.

Graphics and music are top-notch! Really great work!
The pixel-art is very detailed and those are some great tunes to move your head to!

The first time I beat the game, I wasn't able to buy any additional turrets. I maxed-out my armory (empty upgrade cost), but the two additional turrets were still grayed-out for me. Hasn't happened since, so I might have just been blind.
Just thought I'd mention that.

One question: What was the meaning of the turrets becoming purple? Was that them reloading or something?

Overall, this is a really fun game! Great entry!

@LeReveur firstable, make sure it's armory, but bridge (armory is 7th, bridge is the last)
second(able?), make sure your weapons are not broken or you have enough metal to repair it (it'll take couple of seconds)
third(able?), check if you realy assigned the unit: he should come to armory and turn to it's back. On the button will appear an icon of a man.

nothing else can go wrong.

The game seems like so much fun, but after three tries I still didn't understand how to play :/ help screen sure helped, but it would be nice to know what is actually happening to my crew and all the parts :D sometimes the mining worked and sometimes it didn't, even if the locks weren't greyed out or red or had no crew in it, if you ever happen to make a tutorial I would be happy to play again! The art is gorgeous!!!

I loved pixel art and the idea of the game, but I think you have to be able to find a way to be more intuitive and put the use of controls.

I left my rating of your game, if you can leave your feedback in our game, Witch's Escape.

I hope you continue with the project.
