Description

Your mission, if you decide to accept it, is to slay the last witch-knight (the dude above).

As the fight progresses, the circle of light illuminating the arena will dwindle, leaving you with less space to maneuver. (Going out of light means imminent death after a few seconds.)

The game consists of the one hard boss fight. That's all.

Oh, and you die in one hit!

Controls

  • Arrows - movement
  • X - shoot
  • Z - dash
  • F11 - toggle fullscreen

Try to stay in the circle of light. You can go outside for a few seconds, but stay for too long and you'll die miserably. (There is a visual indicator, so you'll know how much time you have.)

Dashing not only allows you to move faster, but it also makes you invulnerable, and destroys projectiles.

(non-QUERTY keyboards are supported properly - Z and X will be remapped to whatever the two bottom-left keys on your keyboard are)

Strategy Guide

This game might be a bit too hard. (Like, Titan Souls-esque hard.)

While it might be interesting to figure everything out by yourself, it may be too frustrating.

Here are a few tips to make your life easier:

  • Phase 1 - Crystals
This shouldn't be hard. Use dash to dodge bullets, and shoot crystals from afar.

  • Phase 2 - Laser
Simply wait behind a rock, until the boss comes nearby. Then dash sideways, get behind his back and hit him a few times.

  • Phase 3 - More crystals
This one is tricky. Try to destroy one of the two crystals ASAP, preferably before it starts shooting. Then you can hide behind the boss and chill.
There is a trick to destroying the second one: Instead of rushing towards it, use boss shield to deflect bullets towards the crystal while sitting in a safe spot.

  • Phase 4 - Magic
At this point you should know how to dodge.
First, you need to kill the two small orbs. Beware: when one is destroyed, the other and the boss itself will start shooting at you. After both orbs die, the boss becomes vulnerable, but also aggressive. You'll need to dash a lot.

That's all, good luck!

Beautiful and difficult. Is it possible to defeat the boss?

I really enjoyed this! Some health indication or visual indicator on how to approach each stage would be useful. For example the third stage I could not complete without reading your guide. All in all a very fun boss fight, what tools did you use to make this?

Shit this is a very difficult game! I think i died 10 times (before rage quit), and I only got to the laser stage! But it was still fun and the graphics were very nice!

@dries-vuylsteke Ye, it turned out a bit harder than necessary. It's C++&OpenGL, with a custom engine.

@truc-e @dagoret Dang. I'm looking into it but I have no clue what's wrong. Can you tell me more about your systems? Which OS, which videocard vendor? If you want to bother, maybe try updating video drivers...

I can hear the buttons responding but all I have is a black screen. Will check in later if you update it!

Extremely well done I would have never have had half the ideas your did for the aesthetics. Some unfair deaths The part where they lock on I had no idea where it was coming then it was a different one! and then it was the boss! and some of the enemy attacks blend in too much with the particles. But in all it was really fun mastering each stage of the boss the most fun I've had playing a Ludum Dare game so far.

Thanks for fixing it! I couldn't get past the first stage, ha. But I can tell this is a good game. The graphics are lovely, the sounds are effective, and the controls respond well. Good job!

Graphics are great, but would it be possible to bind dodge and shoot to more logical buttons? Z and X are illogical and there have been multiple instances were I died just because of these bad controls. Would have probably loved the game otherwise....

(Sorry I'm mad because I sucked monkeyballs.. Rated you highly though!)

Tough like nails!
But a very solid entry. Really well done!

I'd wish for having mouse look to aim, so I get fine grained angular shots like the boss does :)

Very nice visuals, I can tell it's not your first time doing pixel art! I like the style of gameplay as well, quick restarts so death isn't painful!

"I’d wish for having mouse look to aim" I'd say that's a part of the challenge.

@the-shadermaster Huh. What bindings would you prefer? I thought ZX(CV)+Arrows is a pretty standard configuration, what's so bad about it?

Very nice one!
The controls work perfect, the grafics look good, the sound effects are good as well.
The balancing is well done, the move-set of the enemies is well thought of. It is very hard (reminds me of titan souls), but it is not unfair. I managed to beat it with the 27th try - and you managed to keep me motivated the 26 times before.

For future releases: a moody soundtrack and more levels, please. But for this event: great. My favourite so far.

Ah, a skilled boss fight with this theme! I love it. Not that I am nearly skilled enough to beat it (I got to the part where he surrounds himself of runes and then he charged me, I died and decided that I had seen enough) but I love it and yours is great. Good graphic and sound design, nice particle effects, good controls (although I would have loved to be able to fire in a direction and dash in another but I guess this would require mouse control and maybe that simply wasn't your goal?).
Thank you for this game, maybe some day I'll come back to it and try to beat it! How much of the boss was left for me, if you want to spoil this kind of thing?

@eclahn Ah thanks! You were almost done, you just needed to break the two orbs, and then finish the boss himself.

Did you code this in c++? That is amazing! How did you get this done in 48h?!??

This is obviously very impressive work but I have a few issues with the controls, I would have preferred to be able to aim with eg. the mouse as shooting in the same direction you are moving makes the game a bit too difficult IMO, the controls with Z, X for dashing, shooting respectively could probably have been mapped better since I frequently forgot which one does what, it might of course be because I needed more time to get used to them, but I would've preferred another scheme.

That being said I absolutely love this game and the polish with the visuals and the sounds you managed to get in such a short amount of time, extremely well done! :D

16. Aug 2018 · 09:33 UTC
@wildcard Thanks!

> How did you get this done

A simple 'engine' was prepared beforehand. Otherwise I'd have no chance.

> Control scheme

Mouse aim is not happening, I specifically wanted the added challenge of keyboard aim. :P

You're not the only one who complained about Z and X. Which keys would you prefer instead?

@HolyBlackCat Personally, I would map movement to WASD, I would map dash to left shift and shooting I think would be mapped to the space bar. but even this scheme might introduce some problems as the right hand now does most of the work. perhaps shooting up, down, left and right could be mapped to the arrow keys, making the space key obsolete?

I'd have to say my biggest suggestion would be to map the firing to a different control scheme. Otherwise, it was really fun, and the shaders, in addition to the particle effects (like the darkness enemies) made it look super cool and unique. It took a few tries to get the gameplay down, but otherwise, it's a fantastic entry!

A very solid boss fight. Managed to get to the last phase after a few tries.

Very nice graphics and visuals and the gameplay felt solid and smooth and the boss fight itself was interesting with nice change each stage and very challenging.

The only thing missing was nice fitting 8-bit music.

It has alot of content even though, it's just one boss fight. The art style and gameplay makes me think of Titan Souls which is also an incredibly hard game. The boss was pretty fair and surprised me in every new phase. Still like some other ones I would have liked some music, but the sound effects were pretty good though. Good Job!

Btw thanks for the tip that I should do a "Just-exe Version" of my game :)

Very cool boss fight, slick mechanics. Pixel art is fantastic and the lighting effects are sweet but kind of get in the way of the action after a while. I'm not sure how it fits the theme as well. Great job!

18. Aug 2018 · 09:28 UTC
@randomphantom Thanks!

> not sure how it fits the theme

Ugh. The size of the light circle decreases as the fight progresses, and since darkness is deadly, you have less space to fight.

Pros:
- Difficult: I got to phase 4 a couple times -- so close :)
- Art style and particle effects look really good overall
- Dodging felt very satisfying
- I like that you chose to have only two buttons + arrow keys for controls, reminded me of early computer games
___
Cons:
- I got kinda frustrated with the laser phase. I think I would have preferred, although it would make the game a little easier, if there was a lag time on the tracking.
- I liked the art style, but I wish the player and player particle made more sense with the context of everything else -- particle appears out of nowhere and player character looked generic compared to the really cool boss and crystal designs. (I also thought the grass was pleasant on the eyes)
- I felt like the dash and shoot buttons should be swapped -- this is a very small nitpick
___
Definitely one of the better games I played during this jam. Hope to see your game in the next one!
