Ludum Dare Review Meta Game by mrPenguin

[raw]
made by mrPenguin for LD 41 (COMPO)

Hi! Welcome to this awesome game!

To make this game I used the genere of reviewing games on the Ludum Dare Web page, and the board game one.

To play this game you will need:

1. Find an oponent (or multiple opponents!) and consider yourself penguins that want to grab fishes for the winter.

2. Each player/penguin has to pick a rating theme: ( Innovation, Fun, Theme, Graphics ... )

3. By turns, each player will pick one of the puddles of the image, and roll a dice. If the number of the dice on the table below the puddle has a fish, add a star on the characteristic you picked (innovation, fun ...). (double for the one that has two fishes).

4. If the number is a skull, one of the sharks of the puddle will eat you and you will have to represent another penguin (so move all the stars of the counter back to 0).

5. The first to reach the 5 stars(fishes) will win! (now you can play again, or not play evermore).

6. Extra: if you don't have so many friends, you can play with multiple rating characteristics each, increasing the amount of fishes/stars needed.

7. You can also play by yourself with different penguins, and pretend that you have friends on the comment. (As you may have noticed this is a solo project for the compo, so no shame <3 )

8. You have to have fun! (I like adding this condition, because this way if you are not having fun is only because you are not following the rules <3<3<3<3<3 )

To roll the dice, you can use this gif I made for you : ) (to roll, click it with the mouse and drag the image, and a frozen frame of the dice will be your rolled number : ) on mobile you can screenshot or whatever ) (Just realized that this mechanic does not work on Chrome, you shall use https://www.random.org/dice/?num=1): ( dice.gif

Be happy, have fun and leave comments! : D

Hmm, in my childhood I had a fishing simulator board game with the same mechanics :), but turn had two phases, dive and after you had catched fish, you have to get it out of water. And I like your dice implementation

Like the idea of combination ldjam and board game. Win-win.

A nice simple risk-reward mechanism. A few bad rolls and you're forced to risk the sharks. I like it.

@slashie ! I added the link for those playing in chrome, thank you!

Happy to see that you won! (I would have been a bit worried otherwise though xd)

What an amazing idea! I just love all things meta!
And since I have no friends over I decided to let the computer play, which became a meta game in itself :P
Btw the third puddle is totally OP! You only need an average of 18.16 dice throws to get to 5 stars and it wins 64.37% of the games with 3 players where all pick different puddles.
The second puddle has a crazy variance though.
Thanks for this cool game!

Wow, this is the first time I have seen a physical game in a LD before. You've got balls my friend. Very meta, good job

@sibi I love that you did actually checked this! This is why I love Ludum dare <3
I admit that I should have been more careful with probabilities anyway : p

Took me a moment, but that was rather fun. Cute idea, and it's awesome to see someone making a board game in Ludum. :)

I can't say I'm a fan of the true random nature of this, but it's a really unique idea and I love that someone made it. Nice work!

I like people submitting board games to LD. When writing instructions it's clearer if you split the single vs MP instructions I think. I had to read the final note about how to play alone then go through and skim the rules again.

No words, amazing meta design. xD And props for the instagram, penguins fans unite. :) Seriously though, for a small board game it's more balanced than it might have looked initially. Nice job!

Hey! Funny entry!

Not expected to see a board game here. xD

Nice mix, well done! :)

I agree with @morrilet, the game is a bit too random for my taste. I was a bit confused by the rules, but seeing the graphic made the game make sense right away :).

This game makes me feel old. I think it's fine to go with a board game design, but you should still code up something a little interactive. I also hate meta (games about LD strike me as lazy). So I'm probably too down on this and just come off as "old man yelling at kids to get off my lawn."

XD it was a joke anyway to play with the shitty theme, that makes no sense, because you can't combine incompatible things, because they start being compatible at the moment you manage to combine them.

I may or may have not coded another project, and made this one as a joke, and to see how people react to it : p
