Hell's Kitchen by Milo87

[raw]
made by Milo87 for LD 41 (JAM)

It's another day of eternal damnation... And the beasts of the pit are hungry! As a mere kitchen imp, it's your job to keep the demons and devils satisfied.

Cook up their horrible requests and serve them ASAP. Don't burn the food!!

Tip: Brains and Feet need preparing at the chopping board (They require multiple chops to transform into the chopped variant) Hearts can go in whole.

Controls (X-Box controller preferred): * Move: Left Stick * Pick-up / Interact: A * Drop Held Item: B

Cooking process: 1. Grab the ingredients from the item sources. 2. Chop up, if required, at the chopping board. 3. Add to a pot, on a stove, to cook 4. Transfer from pot to plate and serve!

UPDATE: * Had to fix a bug where expired meals would not disappear from the top bar. The v2 download on itch.io reflects this.

UPDATE THE SECOND: * NOW WITH WEB-GL SUPPORT! Thanks for the tip, @isopoly

UPDATE THE THIRD: * Fixed a bug where new meals would not appear. Thanks to @gamesplusjames for playing on stream and finding the bug!

Hmm, maybe it's just me but I couldn't quite figure out the controls of your game. I picked up pots, plates and the ingredients and tried to combine them but nothing worked. I couldn't figure out how to chop something either. Maybe it's because I don't have an XBox controller?

Anyway, I like your idea of a horror cooking game and the looks aren't that bad either. I guess it's just me not being able to figure out the game controls... :D

@Lazzor Yeah, I suspected the controls would let me down... They're a bit buggy at times. Admittedly I tested it chiefly on the xbox controller since that's what I have. On keyboard/mouse, arrow keys move and left click to pick up/activate, right click to drop. Thanks for the feedback!

Controller is a bit buggy at times and it took me a while to get to it. But you did a really great job with the theme and combining horror and food!! A little bit of horror sound could have made it even better!!

@Bhavin Alas, sound is always the thing I sacrifice... If I had more time I would have loved to have added some. That and change that freaking pink sphere for an actual brain  Thanks for the feedback!

Good work! It was a bit confusing in the beginning but after I whipped out the xbox controller, it went a lot smoother. Build an webgl file, you'll get more plays! once again Great work

This was very cryptic at first but it turned out to be very enjoyable! I was struggling with the fact that the plates stay empty visually whether you fill them or not. Also the general controls feel a little imprecise, you had to line up perfectly for the cutting board to work. But after i managed to finish the first few orders it was actually pretty fun! I like it!

@Elbcore yeah, if I were to polish this game I would definitely work on the controls first. And you're right about the plates! I added the visuals to the pot and didn't have to time to add it to the plates... Thanks for the feedback!

That brain model is glorious :D

As others have mentioned, controls need a bit of polish, and perhaps more clear instructions in-game on what to do in the beginning. But nevertheless, it's a fun entry! :)

@hatchet Thanks for the feedback! Glad you enjoyed the brain

This is really neat, took me a while to get the hang of it but its a cool game. - I found the controls a bit confusing though 🙃

@lewis-quaife thanks for the feedback  You know how when you're working on a game and think to yourself "I've got it basically working, I'll come back and tidy it up later" and then never do? Well that happened with the movement... It could stand to be a lot less twitchy, for sure.

i had problems understanding how the game works, especially because of the lack of feedback, i cant see if the food is in the plate and when i delivery it i cant know if it was made right or wrong.

@Jaime-Paz-Lopes yeah the lack of food on the plate is something I really wanted to add but didn't have time... Thanks for the feedback!

Nice work! I enjoyed playing this one and I'd love to see more from it. I could definitely see how it would get very stressful the more servings you had to do :) Nice work!

Thanks @gamesplusjames - I've since uploaded a fix which resolves the lack of new servings spawning. Thanks for the feedback, and thanks for the exposure on Twitch!

The controls need a lot of work to feel better and there isn't many instructions on what exactly to do for each meal which makes it a bit confusing, and the physics are pretty wonky sometimes as well.

I quite like this! Even though I needed a while to get used to the controls with keyboard and mouse, it was fun!

It would have been even better with some sound, more feedback on what I do (when is the right time to stop cooking?) and a game pad, I suppose.

Keep it up!

@CalebLewis @Triastase Thanks for the feedback, guys. (Sorry it took so long, @CalebLewis) Yes the controls are really meant for a gamepad, but Unity default controls also support keyboard/mouse so it's possible (just not very useful, as you found out...)

2 things I want to add to improve the overall feel is more feedback from the cooking (i.e. the bar doesn't just go red and then eventually disappear) and a visual indication of chopping (like a bar that counts up when you chop).

Once you get used to the controls, it's pretty fun. I liked the names of the recipes and how they corresponded to the ingredients. Great job!

Thanks @Smiling Cat Entertainment! I'm particularly happy with how the recipes turned out, so thanks  Of course if I were to expand on the game I'd love to add more creative names!
