Routine by Breno_M

ABOUT
Outraged by the abusive totalitarian government of a small district, you decide to help three rebels bypass the government's surveillance system. Took me a long time to understand how to act and the limitations of reaffectations (not the day corresponding to this action, not the same workplace ?). I reached the 4th mission but failed, even though I really think they crossed each other during the same day. Do they need to be all three in the same place at the same time ?
I would have wanted a kind of skip-day-button, just because it doesn't really do much good if you know what visit or workplace you want to assign but have to wait 4 days til the next off day to do so :grinning:
It took a little while for me to figure out what I was supposed to do, but it was smooth sailing afterwards. The visual style complements the gameplay very well, and the music helps to give it pretty good atmosphere.
I would like to see some kind of day skip or fast-forward button, as I spent quite some time just waiting for the right day to come so I could move one of the characters.
@somethinboutgames, @bearishmushroom, @maggardjosh, fast-forwarding was one of the things I had to take off my to-do list because of lack of time. The top bar was supposed to have much more functions and data, like the relation between the player and the government. But for my first compo, I'm really satisfied with it. :)
Like most people I think I gave up at the 4 mission, I had an intersection where I though they'd all cross, and they came close but not close enough. I really didn't feel like waiting for their days off to shift them around. If I could move them around at anytime and have them do that the next day I probably would have played until I beat it.
very good game overall though!
one thing that would help in the long run is a way to speed up days, there is a lot of waiting for the next day just so you can change their work.
maybe you could also have the government watch a street and if the rebels meet in that street something happens, just so it's like you have this planned out, but you have to change or delay your plans at the last minute
The gameplay is interesting and innovative, but a little confusing. It took me a while to understand what to do and where to click to make something happen. And I wasn't able to find out how to accomplish the last task, too hard for me.
Other than that, you did a great job. keep it up. It reminded me of mini metro, which is a really good game
I like "graph theory games", original mechanics. It is very hard, but it not a bad thing.
PS: A Bug I got was that I accidentally won the whole game without finishing all the meetings between them, I was on the second "mission" and all 3 met on the same spot and the game just told me that I got them all and I had to use esc to exit the game. I hope this is useful.
Anyway, its a cool idea (Wikileaks: The Game!) and nicely executed. Kudos!
The game could be expanded to have multiple levels but overall it was a pleasant experience. Great job!
In the future you could do more missions, add police officers, or multiple meetings in a certain order.
In addition you could provive a tutorial for new players.
Still, really great unique game. I love the mood you set. I'm going to come back to this one to see if I can get farther next time.
Could definitely have been fleshed out a bit more, but it's a pretty solid entry as is!
I love the visuals and the audio. I also love the unique spin on the theme. The puzzle mechanics were really interesting and together with the theme, the music and the visuals it made for a great game.
The UX is lacking a bit. I simply didn't know what to do for a solid 5minutes. I watched them walk around, hovered over their houses and it didn't feel like there was anything I could do. I tried drag and drop, double clicking, right-clicking... nothing worked. The biggest issue was that the buttons (Assign Visitation and Assign Workplace) simply don't have any hover effect and don't look like buttons at all.
Another thing is the actual time mechanic. It think the game would work alot better if it was faster or even turn-based, where you plan your routes and can just check them. Having to wait a whole week to tweak something wasn't really fun, especially when trying to make all 3 of them meet.
All in all, a great 5 star game though. I was really impressed with this one.
Great work! And nice to see such polish in compo, really great.
### What could be improved
**(but what is perfectly understandable because of time constraints):**
- either active pause, or ability to assign work / visit at any time, taking effect on the nearest date (day) possible. It woud make more sense that way.
- ending (well, I expected something more ;) )
- more content, i.e. actual information and story you'd see unfolding.
- day/night transition where map doesn't briefly disappear (taht's a tough one to crack, but I believe in you :D )
This is a great entry, if you decide to take it further I'd be very glad to see it.
Leaving my rating, cheers!
It took me a while to figure out what the game wanted from me though. I thought I had to make the people meet at work or during off-times, but later realized that this was hard-locked in the game, so I figured out I had to make them meet by chance on the street.
I found that challenge a bit tough for my tastes, as the controls were a bit unwieldy. Since I could only change work during off-times and vice versa, the game felt like it was holding me back whenever I wanted to try something out, because it wasn't the right time. I managed to finish tasks 1-3 but gave up when all three rebels almost passed on the the street, but missed each other by a fraction of a second.
Overall it's an awesome set-up that could benefit from a little more refinement to give the player more control. That and maybe a few more mechanics, but of course time is always an issue.
Great job overall!
