Star Shadow (Incomplete) by Veilastrum

[raw]
made by Veilastrum for LD 41 (JAM)

First Jam I've had. This is an actually not complete, and lot of things are not done. I'll admit that it's pretty messy right now in the state that it's in. Extremely unpolished right now and have no sound effects. But eh. I'm just gonna put this here anyways for people to mess around with it.

I might see if I can improve it into an actual game in the future, but for now, this is all I have. I did learn a few things about what not to do for the next jam though, so I guess that's something.

Controls (since it wasn't written in the game due to lack of time):

ASWD keys: Movement

Left Mouse Button: Shoot

Right Mouse Button: Dash

Shift Key: Hold for Sniping Mode (you can't normal shoot while doing this)

Spacebar: Toggle between cloaking and not cloaking. Spends shade.

You can hide in those giant shadow circles without spending shade.

No piece of art is ever finished :)
I really liked the art style and the music. You also played to the theme of 2 genres brilliantly. Don't beat yourself up about it. I wouldn't call my game finished either.

@rytannic Thanks. I'll try to be more positive with my creations on later jams, haha. This was my first jam I've ever had.

The game has a surprising amount of content from an outside perspective. You should be very proud even if it's not finished in your eyes others don't realize what is not there.

Hey, the fact that you uploaded something playable is absolutely amazing. How many people will go their entire lives dreaming about developing their own game and never actually doing it? That being said, yes, the game could use some extra sound effects and a tutorial. But honestly what is there is actually quite fun. The light enemies that chase you are really intense. I haven't really seen anything quite like that in similar bullet hell games.

I can't say I didn't have fun! Good movement+controls! The enemies were too messy and unorganized.. which is completely normal taking into account what you were trying to do.

This genre's scope was very big! You did well for such a big scoped game!

That said, you miiight wanna scope smaller next time :P

Cool game for your first Jam buddy! :D
The controls felt great and the music was pretty cool too.
I really liked the cloaking mechanic! Not gonna lie, took me a while to figure it out cause i'm pretty slow, lol, but it's definitely a neat addition to the game.
Keep it up!

Interested. It lacks a lot of feedback to make the game less confusing, they would greatly facilitate learning. Balancing is also to be reviewed,** but the bass is there, congratulations!**

The theme is not respected.

I think the artwork clearly the most impressive factor, great futuristic look - that's not easy to achieve on the timeframe. Likewise a lot of cool features like the stealth, sniper mode, dashing that go beyond the basics. Good thematically appropriate music. Radius based aggro on its own isn't that fancy (in fact I have it in my game too) but you've given it an aesthetic that makes it a lot cooler, like the visible radii and the eye that reveals you.

Maybe I didn't figure it out but after dying I couldn't restart without exiting the game. In general stuff like this is more important than adding the sniper mode so I'd recommend that sort of prioritization for future jams.

I will keep in mind all of your tips for future jams and try to stay more positive with my creations in the future as well.

Loved the dark ambience. Nice music, Ultra challenging gameplay!
A vertical shooter with mouse aiming is a really good idea, I think it could be a genre by itself.
Excellent work!

Great entry! This is really good for your first jam game! And yes you will learn so much the more of these you do. I really like the idea of combining a stealth game with a space shmup, those are definitely two incompatible genres. It did seem like it was a bit too easy to just go into stealth mode and hide out in those shadows. But you balanced this out by having those enemies that would disable your ability to cloak yourself. I would really like to see how this would turn out if you kept developing it! Also great visuals and the audio fits very well. Congratulations on your first jam!
