Dirty Race by Shape

[raw]
made by Shape for LD 41 (JAM)

A puzzle racing game.

This is my first Ludum Dare game :D

In this game you play as a driver that is in a competition against time. In each level the goal is to get to the finish line, but beware, there are many obstacles and traps on the way. Also there are other drivers who don't necessary try to engage with you, but they are also trying to finish the competition for themselves. Unfortunately they are not as smart as you are and they might end up messing your race (or helping you test the deadly puzzles).

The final boss is a really hard race. This time you compete with a real enemy. The first to the finish line shall be the winner.

Tips and tricks

  • Don't forget to slow down some times!
  • If you are having a bad time make sure you play the 10th level (this one seems to be the most popular one)
  • The levels that are colored in red are harder than the others.
  • Also the dificulty of the levels is pretty random and usually an easy new puzzle is followed by a combination of that puzzle plus all the puzzle you experienced beforehand

Controls

  • Hold W to accelerate
  • Hold S to decelerate
  • Hold Left Shift for a fast deceleration
  • Tap on the Space Bar to get over small obstacles ( like rocks/spikes )
  • Tap on A or D to move left/right

A very good game with lots of level, but really too hard. Need more votes

TY so much @FiveCyclops ^^
And yes it is pretty hard... I was the only one who playtested it.

This was **really** hard. Even the first level was tough. I think part of that comes down to the camera angle. It's tough to see what's coming and even tougher to figure out the depth of the 15 objects I can see ahead of me. It made it a little frustrating to play for me, but being able to skip around to different levels was helpful. I got to *see* the boss even if I never actually beat him. Speaking of, I got to level 5! Anyway, the racing/puzzle game is a cool angle, but I think it needed some adjustments to make the game a little easier.

Also, if you want to see another take on the theme, check out my tower-defense/golf game, [Puttsy](https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/41/Puttsy).

That was hard, probably absurdly hard, but also fun ^^
The landscape and graphics were nice, on the downside the music was repetative.
I liked how you introduced new level elements and combined them in later levels (although they stand very close to each other).

I think in this game there was no need to include a time limit, the other suicide driver do this job as well ;-)

@morrilet @gilborn haha and i thought the game was too easy 😅. Well i guess i'll ask for feedback on level design next time or i'll try to make a more casual game. Thank you so much for the comments!

Good job! Really hard to play though, and the puzzles... or can you call them puzzles? I would say this is more of a basic arithmetic test of some sort. Maybe call it a racing educational game? I like the art though. This is really well done 3D art for Ludum Dare! Good job, and good luck!

The game idea and the graphics is overall good. Sadly the controls makes the game really difficult to play. And I am sorry to say this, but the music is really not good. But for a first LD game this not bad.

There some really interesting puzzles in there; as well as really clean 3D graphics the like of which you do not often see during a game jam. Maybe the game would have benefitted from a camera located a bit higher to help the player apprehend the distances. Props for the sound, certainely handmade but works well as a loop !

This was fun to play! Though it was very hard indeed! It'd be nice if the collision from the sides was somehow more forgiving(probably by not triggering at all) and if there were some indicators on where the obstacles will spawn. I couldn't get past the boss.

Great game overall!

@jk5000 Yeah i know that the music is not good, but after all the work that has been put in this game it didn't feel right to use music that is not mine or to leave the game with no music at all. And thank you again, i didn't think much of the grapichs but for some reason people really like low poly stuff

Fun idea and nice aesthetic, but due to poor communication of what's coming up behind you damage taken from other cars felt very unfair. It also took me a while to realise I could raise the car up with spacebar, at first I thought it was impossible to avoid some of the x3 spike rows.

Loved this game, was a lot of fun! Great job on it! The music was a bit meh, but I'm not gonna be too harsh about that since that's not what's important in games to me :P Keep creating!

Interesting game, I loved the idea, but the game needs a little more polishment, like the speed of the horizontal movement. I liked the music, fits very well with the aesthetic of the game. Good job!

Very interesting, I think I haven't seen puzzles made with cars since the ps1 era.
