Jungle Raider by Torak Whiteleopard

[raw]
made by Torak Whiteleopard for LD 40 (JAM)

Pillage the nearby jungle for as many gems as you can, but be aware that each one is heavy and will slow you down!

This game is a mix between platformer and puzzle game - while you can try to complete the levels as quickly as possible the real challenge is to complete each level with all gems and no damage taken - this may take some restarts, since some gems may not be possible to grab as you pick up more weight, and you may find yourself having to take a new approach to obstacles as you become slower!

Navigate puzzling levels and try to get all the gems!

Dodge various traps and pitfalls as you head to the exit - watch out for arrows, boulders and more!

To play the game, download it, open up the .rar file and run JungleRaider.bat within the folder.

If you've got Python and PyGame installed on your computer, you can try the level editor too.

Nice game, I like the little running visual effect! I got very into beating the last couple of levels with all gems. Would have been very nice to have arrow key support, I'm getting cramp in my left arm from holding shift whilst trying to do intense platforming.

Yay, a pygame game! I'm learning to make games in pygame and I really enjoyed what you have created here. I think the art style is great and the levels you created have a lot of thought and effort put behind them. Nice work!

Neat. The graphics are simple but work for me, and the mechanic's cool. I like the music too, definite jungle vibes. I kind of wish the slow-down based on weight was a little less pronounced. After a few gems you're crawling! But I'm impatient, so maybe it's just me. Also, yes, it's cool to see a pygame game! A friend of mine tried to learn it and it seems like a solid little engine!

Man, that weight/jump height curve is rough, clever take on the theme though. I think it would be cool if there was still a way to complete all the levels, even while collecting all the gems. The completionist in me hates leaving anything behind.

@toestee all the levels can actually be completed with all the gems - it's extremely difficult but still possible!

Cool game, loved the art style and the sound effects. Really liked the background tune, but after a while the loop tired me a little. The mechanic/take on theme was a great idea, in spite of getting really hard to jump with the weight. The dead effect is really nice too!

I did feel that using WASD with the Space Bar was not the best choice - it got awkward to control. If you add support to the Arrows I think it will be easier to control the character as this adds an unpredicted difficulty.

Overall really cute, interesting mechanic, spot on and different take on the theme. Congratulations!

@saramartins thank you very much for the feedback! The issue I ran into with the controls was keyboard jamming - the game wouldn't react well to multiple arrow keys for some reason and would result in the player acting very unresponsively. This is definitely something I will look into implementing properly for future games however, so thanks for the advice.
