Apocalypse Tycoon by javicepa

[raw]
made by javicepa for LD 41 (COMPO)

The zombie apocalypse ravaged the world some time ago, but that's no excuse to stop capitalism!

These are special zombies, powered by a huge gold coin inside of their chest. Blow them up to pieces to boost your economy and buy a new helicopter to laugh at them from the skies!

In this game you have to manage a group of survivors BUT you can't use weapons of any kind. Instead you'll have to give orders to the members of your team.

Controls: arrow keys only (everything is contextual, just get close to something to activate it)

Was funny trying to pick up one gun that I wanted and all five of my people would shuffle around their weapons trying to make it happen

a lot of clever stuff going on in this game nice work

Great game! you did a fantastic job with the graphics, and the gameplay was very fun! I think you nailed down the survival aspect really well, but the tycoon/economy part wasn't incorporated as nicely so I gave you a lower rating on Theme (3.5). And it was a fairly generic survival game, so I gave you a lower score on innovation (3.0). But everything else was great! you got a 4.0+ in all other categories :D.

Great game. Found it very challenging, the weapons didn't seem to do much damage and i didn't find a way to restore health, didn't make it to the end but i loved the art style, and the vocal sound effects and music was a nice touch. I found it pleasant. Overall great game :)

The game feels very finished! The idea of being helpless is good and playing feels nice :D
The pathfinding of your partners & enemies seems to get stuck between buildings sometimes.

Excellent, love the use of vocals on the sound and the random pixel characters. Found the game pretty tricky, and only completed it because my coins carried over between play throughs - although I am not sure that's what you intended!

The game concept is fun and easily expandable and the graphics and sounds are perfect. The only thing i can nitpick is the difficulty, but that can be easily fixed, or maybe i'm just bad. There's also a (maybe intended?) bug, where the coins don't reset after restarting the game, but because of it i actually managed to win

Great job!

Loved it. The visual, the sounds, the music, the gameplay, and everything. Really nice work!

I do wish you could have a bit more control over your followers, such as a "passive" mode where they just follow you around instead of trying to heroically shoot down a horde of zombies with a pistol only to be cut down in seconds.

@frostdragonliz @chuck-zelvis it's a bug indeed! I'm happy it was the only one to slip through, the last compo hours were INTENSE. Thanks for the nice comments! :D

Looks and sounds very good, feels very finished. But to only walk around until you get 100 coins i don't think i could play this a long time. But overall a very good entry

Liked the idea of indirect combat, gives a whole new approach to the game. Nicely done, specially the audio effects, congrats!

This is a pretty cool concept. I like the idea of leading around a small group of people using positioning in order to get them to do what I want. Only needing to using the arrow-keys helped keep the game nice and simple to interface with. I'd say the cell shaded, isometric visuals are definitely the highlight here. The a cappella sound design was also very charming. My one complaint would be that the spawn rate for allies was too low early on and it took me a while to find even one more guy. But, once things got going, I had a lot of fun. Nice work!

Great game, had a lot of fun seeing the ending! I appreciated the coin bug because otherwise I never would have finished it  I just wish there was a way to tell my survivors not to attack (though this would have introduced another button which probably isn't what you wanted)

@Lerg I was going to Port it to html5, but it didn't work because of the postprocessing.. Also, I don't have a Mac, so I don't want to release it Blondy :(
I hope you understand. Thanks a lot for your interest in the game!!

Nice game! I liked how hard it was, it helps building an apocalyptic vibe (a perfect match with the aesthetic of the game), but the sounds and music, although pretty funny and cool, break that atmosphere. I think some more random people could help build the managing ressources part of the game. Very well done!

@Lerg I tried compiling it for mac but it simply doesn't work and throws 17 errors I cannot figure out... Sorry :(

Loved the visuals and the pikmin-like concept. I missed some more depth as you're mostly running away from zombies (and avoiding those damn dead-end alleys haha).

It's really polished and looks great. I enjoyed playing it.

Really cool game. It is hard and you get easily trapped in dead ends but this is cool that you are powerless and that you have to rely on others survivors. The day and night cycle is quite fast which made it a bit difficult to prepare for an attack and to do some base preparation but trying to survive was already fun.

Wow, I loved the absurdity style of the game, the mechanics and design are great and the sound effects combined with the music really made it, really polished game for a compo. The only thing I don't really see that much is the theme applied to it (I guess it is zombies-but without actually you killing them)

Had fun playing it!! :v:
