About LD38 and AaaRrr:

aaarrr_flatlogo.jpg

LD38 theme was "A Small World" but we took the chance to publish some unknown alternative facts. According to the latest researches in the US, the world is also FLAT. So we created not only a small world but also a flat world. Inspired by some of our favorite games from the past... ;-) Enjoy our two player game with your buddy or train your skills before the fight.

...Prepare for epic battles... ;-)

It's 4 hours until the Compo ends... We have published our game to our webservers and we have done everything to publish this game also to the ldjam website... The last "Publish" button not yet pressed on this site is the one next to the comments area... Might this be the hidden entry point to participate in this years Ludum Dare? ;-)

Sound made this game - really good work on this aspect. It actually seems pretty fun but I couldn't appreciate it to the fullest since I don't have any buddy living close enough to sit before one monitor :(
Also - it took me a while to find download links on the game page. You should organize them in one section, not hide between videos and screenshots(they are hiding pretty well now).

A local multiplayer game I tried to play alone. Controlling both boats at the same time really confused me. So much that I even forgot to share the game screen on the stream for a while.. hehe

This game perfectly fit the theme: a very very small world! And you have to fight to stay on it. The music is also awesome and add a lot to the ambience!

I would have love a single player version too, but I understand it would have been hard to code an AI for one of the boats in the limited timeframe of LD.

(You can see me playing this game for the first time on the vod https://youtu.be/34z-nBWKdEw?t=1h30m9s )

I played the WebGL version both solo and with a friend.

So I think it's clear the music is a winner here. I like the "arr" sound effects as well. The graphics are cute if a little simple, and the physics works well (although what's up with cannonballs "jumping" on water lol?). The concept is brilliant and everything is really clear.

Three points of potential feedback because I'm mean:
1. This is tough to play even two-player on a cramped keyboard, especially with the very strong current. This made stalemates inevitable because sailing to shoot your opponent typically makes you lose too. I feel like if the current was weaker, cannonballs would make more difference to who wins or loses. One of my ships got stuck on its side and couldn't sail anymore XD.
2. I couldn't test if you had gamepad support but if you do, that would resolve another part of the issue.
3. I hate criticising anything about art, so this is picking at straws, but I do feel like the water could have been more than a blue plane. I mean, I get this is supposed to be a jam and that your art style wasn't terribly focused on shading things realistically, but come on, you have an island with cool palm trees and particle effects around the sides, lighting etc etc ... a little more detail in the water itself would be nice, even if just a moving texture.

All that being said I really enjoyed it and am sure it will score well for fun. Simple, beautiful idea, for the most part really well-executed. I'm a fan.

Really nice concept, and (as mentioned by @lars-dk) for me the strong point was sound. The sweet sweet sound of aarararars was pretty fun to listen to. As for gameplay, I really wish that the ships had more momentum or mass to them, as crashes don't really seem to have too much of an effect on the other ship for me. Also online multiplayer would be nice (though I realize that that is a pretty difficult task).

I thought the controls were a bit off (forward worked well, but turning felt awkward). The sound effects were neat, if not a little loud. I kinda of wish it felt more impactful when the bullets hit the other player. Could use some polish but solid idea!

Pretty fun, even alone I took the time to push the other ship more than 30 times for the joy to hear them shout :) ... and fell to my death at least 5 times as well.
Not easy to see where the front of your ship is when you just spawned. One might say it is funny to see a ship going directly to the abyss because of that mistake I don't know :)
Ho and nice use of the theme. The water pushing the ships toward the border and the water falling are the best part. With controls simulating winds and sailing a little bit more it would be even more fun.

That's one funny game! i love the sound effects especially when ships fall of the edge :D Gameplay is very simple but engaging and fun; easy to play but hard to master. Shame there is no multiplayer option but it's still nice to play it in 'local multiplayer'. To spice things up maybe there should be some enviromental hazards, like whirlpools or storms? Graphics are neat and in overall pretty solid entry.

I wish I had friends to play this with :( Pretty good entry non-the-less. I could imagine how frantic it would be exchanging shots with your opponent. Something that would make this game very interesting would be bots that also tried to knock you off. It could make for a very fun solo or co-op experience!

Hi, so much fun with this game. Great idea for the theme. Sounds are hilarious. Could not play with another player, but I can imagine how funny it should be. Congrats! and @hackschnitzel, thanks for nice feedback on my game - NUKEBALL - https://ldjam.com/events/ludum-dare/38/nukeball

Really fun how similar our entries are in some aspects indeed (even the name :D). It's great that you made a local multiplayer game, something that I wish there was more of in both gamejams and on the general game market. The idea is very innovative, its fun to play in the "sumo wrestling" style and it is a perfect concept for a party game. I imagine this could get quite popular if you continued development, I imagine a lot of powerups and other partyesc features. It's a great feature that the water is flowing off the world and that you are pulled out coninually, it makes it feel "scary" and "urgent" and just adds a ton of fun.

Visually think it looks very nice as well, everything is very coherent and feels good.

Great job fellow pirates, lets teach those landlubbers what we are made of!

Awesome take on a KOTH style game, with great graphics considering the time and fitting pirate themed music... I will definitely be using this to settle disputes ;)

Hey hey !

EN - The gameplay is very funny ^^. I think a local multiplayer is a great idea. There is not much multiplayer game.

FR/CH - Super jeu ! ça fait plaisir de trouver des Suisse à la Ludum Dare ! J'espère que vous venez participer à nouveau à la Ludum Dare ! Salutation des Fribourgeois !

Viel Glück und Gruss !

I died twice before understanding how to move the boat xD but it's part of the fun. Very pirate-y atmosphere, I like it ;) especially with the sound effects. It's good to have a multiplayer game, although I played on my own^^ but still had some fun! Nice idea!

Small but fun! It could really work well as a party game with more players and stuff like power-ups! I absolutely loved the sound effects, they were amazing :P I had to play by myself, but still I just rammed the ships into each other and let them fall just to hear the sound effects :P Really great game overall, good job! :D
