In Colony you play as the leader of a small colony on a far away planet. Disaster strikes when a transport ship heading for you with vital resources, crash lands and damages the colony! You must keep the colony alive until help arrives at any cost. Some may even have to make the ultimate sacrifice for the survival of the colony.

How to play

The various locations on the map will deteriorate and break down quickly. When a problem arrises in a location, a number is displayed over the location. Click the location to see the problems that need fixing.

Each problem has a specific type (biology, electronics, engineering) and a risk rating. If you click on a task you may then select whom to send to the task. Different people are good at different things, so select the people that are skilled in the type of problem you wan't to fix.

The more skilled the people are, and the more people you select, the lower the risk rating will be. Safety in numbers! The risk rating determines the chance of the crew taking damage and how much damage they take.

Once the task has been completed the assigned people receive damage, get more experienced in the type of problem they just fixed and are now available to take on new tasks!

Note: People heal as long as they are home on the base and not assigned to any task.

Keep on trying to fix problems as they pop up and try to save the colony!

I like that you have notification sounds it really helps with the need to scroll because I can keep two building in focus and if I hear the effect and I only need to check two buildings max before I know where the new break is. I also like that you are using a clear font and color coded the issues so I can quickly scan the issues to see who is best at what and what type of problem it is.

Nice game! I included it in my compilation video series of games from the Ludum Dare, if you’d like to take a look :) https://youtu.be/qbVCRHP5Rcg

Adriana Lutz was working quite a lot on my game lol .. I like games that make you feel like you are working on something serious .. I can see this with a bit of music becoming a quite nice game to play on the ipad =)

Great take on the theme, having to choose between what to fix when you have a limited number of workers captures the sacrifice feeling well. I did find the difficulty to be pretty high and wasn't able to make it past day 8, though not sure if I just didn't find the right strategy? Nice cohesive visuals and the sound effects work well to help alert you about what's going on.

@devharts Thank you for trying it out! I have to agree with you about the difficulty. I lost a few hours to some unforseen things, so as the final hours of the jam closed in I had to prioritize. Sadly I had to cut som much needed balancing and music (as @velvetlobster pointed out). That being said I am still quite happy with it now after having a break from staring at it for 48 hours

The presentation of this game is good. I like the premise, and the overworld graphics are certainly well done.

However, as soon I actually started playing, it just felt overwhelming. There's lots of numbers and things popping up. I was trying to look through the staff for the first task when other tasks are immediately popping into existence. The real time pressure of things going wrong with the game mechanics that want more thought put into them is a conflict which I think hurts the fun.

Good job on making a complete looking experience!

Great job! I was a little overwhelmed at first but got really into it. I like all of the sounds and the art was simple and made it easy to tell what was going on.

Pretty solid concept, really like this one! I kinda suck at it but, I'm sure balance would be less of a concern over things like... more content and progression if this were to be developed post-LD.
Would've been nice with music but the sounds are very satisfying and clear.

I couldn't win a game. I think the stations should produce a positive amount of energy, etc. by default and start at a lower percentage than 100% for balancing it.

tim-eriksen, good job with this game I hope you get enough people to pass a Ludum Dare 😓. It is a little late but it is not impossible

Wow everything breaks down so fast. A pause button would be welcome & probably make the crews level matter more (linear subtraction doesn't cut it when things have 60% base chance of failing and crew levels range from 1 to 8). Other than that really nice compo entry.

@neato Thank you for trying it out! And yes, I totaly agree. If I had more time I would definitely make some changes to that aspect of the game.

Awesome game! I liked the concept, and the gameplay was interesting and fun. There were a good amount of Sound Effects, but I would suggest adding Background Music or a loop next time to set the mood. Graphics were really detailed and it all sort of just blended together. I didn't see much of an instruction screen or tutorial in the game, which might help a lot of players who didn't look at the Ludum Dare page or are more of hands-on learners. Awesome job!

Cool game! I wish there was a minimap (but I understand time was limited). The main concern for me was that I kept picking engineering tasks ---because I thought the "red" meant "very important". Otherwise, was a lot of fun! Good use of theme. Hope you get the ratings you need in time!

Nice creation, I like the graphics and the game idea. For a compo game, it looks really complex and polished! Some music could be nice. (And that's perfectly fine to ask me to play your game, I hope you'll get enough ratings) Anyway congrats! :D

I like the presentation of the game and like the idea even more. It is very polished for a compo game. Haven't found any major problems with it (I mean, a tutorial or simple how-to-play woundn't hurt, making location of facilities clearer (I found Thermal almost at the endo of the game), pacing it better (or adding a pause button, as someone above suggested)), but overall a very solid entry, great job!

This is really cool - as others have said, the difficulty curve isn't quite right, but that's perfectly normal for a Ludum Dare game. The idea here could totally be a fleshed out into a "full" game.

Thank you for your ratings and comment about my own project - Effigies. I see that you reached the number of ratings to receive an evaluation in a few hours. I am not at home - for this reason I cannot test and rate your game. However Jupiter shares an interesting video in which I can see what you had done. I evaluate your game according her experience. I wish you the best ++
