Lava King by Jay Elbourne

[raw]
made by Jay Elbourne for LD 43 (COMPO)

The Windows download has sound and play best. The WEBGL does not have sound and I think it is a bug in the newest version of Unity.

 Controls: - A & D keys for Move - O key for Attack - P key for Jump

It is that time of the week ... SACRIFICE time. The Obojo tribe has their offering all together but they have learned from the past.

Just because you throw the offering into the volcano doesn't mean it gets to the lava.

As the KING of the tribe, you must ensure the offering makes it to the lava. If the LAVA does not get its offering, it begins to rise up, ready to explode. Make sure to get the offering into the lava before it is too late.

You can not touch the offering without getting hurt by their spikes, so use your broom to hit them into slumber (retracting their spikes) then push them into the lava before they wake up. [They get exhausted when fighting you]

The game is pretty fun to play, but, as for me, it is not obvios what to do at first launch. But, anyway, really cool game:)

Pretty neat and smooth for a compo game.

I have two small remarks regarding things that could be improved - first is enemies stucking at walls, expecting them to fall smoother. Second is small control glitch - when you attack when jumping, attack always goes to the right side even if you faced left before jump.

Nice game with a simple but good concept.
I'm sad that you must use the mouse to click on buttons when the rest of the game needs you to use both hands on the keyboard, but that's just a detail!
Great work!

@andrea Thanks...I agree and although I made the first two screen (any key to continue) I missed coding it on the game over screen....When I played through after submitting that is the first point I wanted to correct.

@sun-wukong Thanks for the feedback. The attack jump is definitely something I should fix....The enemies sticking was something I don't mind as their whole thing is to stay out of the lava and it's your job to get them in. I agree it can be annoying at time, so perhaps the effect I was going for was not the best.

@erendelous I hear you...I think I should have put a little tutorial text at the beginning for the first minute or so.

I had fun with this! Controls felt nice, and a well-realized visual style. Having the "try to beat 200" challenge right on screen is an amazing idea - gives the player a goal to keep 'em coming back!

On a few occasions the enemies got stuck on the side walls - I thought I was being clever by pushing them off that way rather than through the whole level, but they didn't fall all the way. I also felt like the reach of the attack was just a little short which made getting hit by spikes a bit unforgiving.

All in all though, this is a really slick & complete package.

@rjhelms Thank you so much for the amazing feedback. I understand the points you make about the enemy on the side walls and the attack distance....I actually fixed the attack distance to be twice as wide as the visuals to fix that problem but forgot to extend the broom sprite out to match the change....The visual is then not good for the player. As you mentioned it still feels like a tight attack box.

Simple but pretty fun arcade style game. Made it over 200 :).

Made it to 384 on my third or fourth try!

The game actually got easier once a few platforms burned up so playing it slow at first seems to be the way to go. Nice art!

Fun game! I like the simple but effective idea, the graphics are cool, the audio is nice as well. As others have pointed out, sometimes the enemies are stuck inside walls and it is a bit hard to get the length of your attack, but otherwise, this is a nice and fun game ^^ Congrats!

Nice idea about to drop them to the lava. Is somewhere your sourceCode/project awailable? I m interested about your 2d platformer setup because it behaves just like I expect. Nice entry. Sorry now i see it on github, sorry.

Somehow, there is no music in HTML5 version, I had to download windows for sound.

Nice, some tuning to the controls would make it a lot smoother

Cool idea and easy to play and understand. Also, the graphics are really pleasant. My complain is that is way too easy in my opinion to get hurt by the spikes and fall off the platforms. Maybe a slightly bigger range for the attack and more drag in the platforms would make this better, but it is a minor annoyance. Nice entry!
