Engine in Shadow by visumecadroide

[raw]
made by visumecadroide for LD 41 (JAM)

Engine in Shadow is a stealth racing game imade for Ludum Dare 41. Theme was "Combine 2 Incompatible Genres". Find the exit, avoid cars lights, park to hide when you're out of view, don't collide too much with other cars or your engine will stop.

It was the first time i had to mix 2D and 3D and i never used lights before.

!WARNING : It is button A move forward and button X to move backward

Corrections to make :

  • some objects penetrates through some others (unity physics: ¯_(ツ)_/¯ )
  • lights mays have problem

*I am planning on making it into a full game, so if you have any idea of what you would like to see in the future version, feel free to tell me in the comments ;) *

Nice game, but I don't really understand why do we have to hide. I mean, guards are following us... and.. nothing happens. But I really like the concept, I think it might be something interesting to
develop more. The lights were pretty nice, espcially the exit one

I would like to see a game in the style DRIVER with infiltration missions of this type! Interesting! Cool graphics!

I like the premise of the game, though really struggled with the sluggish acceleration/turning of the car. The patrol cars moved very quickly and it was near impossible to change direction to hide/move out of their way. The level design is great and the use of headlights was a clever way of showing an oncoming car. With a few adjustments to the player's car control, this game would be excellent! Good work!

I love the idea of a stealth driving game. The game did lose a lot of its tension though when I realised the guards don't actually do anything!

@fidrik , Yes the acceleration is not the best, it was the first time i was working on a top down car control.
I think i will make a post jam version of the game.
Thanks for your comment.

@Lyje The guards follow you when you are spotted but their field of view is short because i was thinking it will be too hard for the player. I was wrong :D
I think i will make a post jam version of the game. Thanks for your comment.

I love the concept. And gamepad support is great decision for racing game. Need more variations of obstacles, like security cameras, and maybe doors and buttons at dead ends, that lead you to finish.

The idea is great. Playing stealth game with car feels like beginning of the movie Drive. But the game feel is just weird. And nothing really happens when the "guards" see me and drive towards me. If the car exploded on collision, it would force the player to strategize more. Also, bugs

Need some way to move backwards or do a three point turn (or maybe I'm just missing it), as of now its easy to get stuck on walls. The guards seem to just push you in a corner I guess. I like the idea of driving around doing stealth missions though, could see this being developed further!

@randomphantom you can go backward using X on gamepad or down arrow on keyboard

I like the idea of a stealth game with cars whilst having to hide specifically from the headlights, that's a nice touch!
The controls however need a bit of work still, as well as the AI.
Maybe it's better with a controller (I tried with keyboard) but i felt the turning radius of the car needed to be a little smaller.
Other than that the AI kept T-boning me as soon as they saw me and i stuck to them like duct tape, not being able to get away xD

Nicely done. Thats quite the challenge to drive stealthily. I kept getting caught on the geometry of other cars though.

Cool idea! controls were a little difficult but i managed to reach the exit in my first try, so nothing impossible. Graphics is nice, very stealth feeling using the light mechanics! I enjioyed it good work!

The lighting looked amazing and really added to the sneaky, stealth feel of the game. I think if you expand upon the game in the future there should be some sort of collectibles and maybe some sort of power ups. Only problems I had was some of the collisions which you mentioned and that the turning was kind of slow. I really like what you did with this game and am interested to see how you expand it. Great job.

This was really neat idea, I think it was executed quite well - if there was more time to get the mechanics more solid I think this could be a really interesting game to play. I think maybe adding lights onto your own vehicle could be another mechanic you could add, where you need to turn them off to reduce visibility to others, but as a result it makes your visibility worse. I think you managed to mix 2d and 3d really well, it had nice look to it, only downside was the enemy cars doing very sudden movements! good effort loud!

A really solid entry that could benefit from some fine tweaks to the controls and movement of the guard cars. Otherwise, a really nice entry. With some more work and polish, it would be a pretty awesome game!

A stealth car? Outrageous. Love it. Concept is really appealing - graphics took me straight back to games of yore :D Mechanically the car was quite fun to control. I loved the idea of parking to hide but in reality it became much easier to just run - I think the guard cars do not punish you enough when found so you end up just disrespecting them and driving past. And enemy cars doing instant 180's at will is just rude ;) I'd like to see that go :P

Good entry though!

Hard to control the car but the concept is really fun. When I'm found, I don't seem able to escape, but it's was really nice to play! gratz!

A very interesting concept and executed with simplicity, my only objections would be the controls for controlling the car with the XBox controller are non-traditional, also, the sudden stops when pressing the A button is another downside of the game.
