Shinigami's new assignment by Sun-Wukong

[raw]
made by Sun-Wukong for LD 44 (JAM)

Play as a little shinigami(angel of death) on a quest of collecting human souls in order to avoid your own demotion. It actually started from motto "YOUR life is MY currency" and I was going to use souls as money to buy upgrades but ss the game development progressed, it gone further and further from theme with cutting out all the features I couldn't implement in time, lol.

Even though the gameplay part itself pretty much completed, there is still unfinished parts even though I gone for the Jam. Especially sounds that are random and not completed. (Title screen also was drawn in like 5 last minutes)

Controls:

Arrows or WASD - movement

Space - jump

z,x,c,v,b,n or m - attack

!Update: I have found and fixed bug at last. Also fixed missed collisions on some levels and did a small tweaks to hitboxes so crows wouldn't be so hard to hit. Now it is at least almost without bugs if still unfinished.

Good graphics ! The introduction particularly is super cool. And the shadowy people in the street.

Unfortunately I couldn't get passed the 3rd level (with 2 souls). The first soul seems to be on a building with 2 platforms, but I can't jump on them, no collision. The nearby buildings seem to be too far from it as well. Am I missing something? Please let me know, since I'd like to continue playing.

The artwork is really nice, I like the little Shinigami Shina. :) I enjoyed the conversation between her and Enma and it was what kept me playing, to see more of their interaction.
The combat mechanics could use a little improvement in my opinion. Being unable to move while attacking lead to a lot of damage by crows that could have been otherwise avoided.

Hmm, that strange, I did playtest all levels for them to be at least passable. I'll look it up.

A really fun and particularly well realised game that feels extremely polished! Gameplay is smooth and feels even smoother because of the outstanding art direction. Very, very well done!

The mood you manage to conjure is incredible. It's even better because of the goofy contrast with the dialog scenes. Trying to impress ~~Bowsette~~ Emna was an amazing experience!

Skylark72, I've looked it up and there is really missed collision on one platform but the path to all souls on level is there so it should be passable. I'll fix that collision in update.

Purrseus, thanks.

Really cute art and I like the theme, but sadly the level design combined with the enemies and zoomed in camera make for a pretty frustrating experience, especially all the random leap of faiths that are required to get some of the souls. The jump is also a bit stiff and trying to hit the crows can be very annoying too.

I overall liked it but it would have helped if you polished it up by having less levels that are better designed instead of having a bunch of mediocre levels. More dialogue during the cutscenes would have also been nice.

Holy cow! You enimated literally _everything_ in the game! This is incredible! And it adds a lot to overall feeling! The combat is a bit difficult to handle, which turns a game into a dodging challenge. ;-) Still it is an enjoyable solid platformer!

Brilliant game. Loved the animations and artwork. Game-feel is really solid. It all felt super-polished. I'm not sure if the scythe contributes to the game much. Dodging enemies was more fun than killing them.

What a cute story! I was always looking forward to the next cutscene, I thought those were really well done. The art was superb, the animation on Shina especially, the walk cycle seemed incredibly smooth. The shadowy people worked great for the mood as someone mentioned before, that along with the music really pulls you in. So yeah, great job again!

Love the art style. Nicely done overall! The sounds were a bit loud though. And it was a bit diffult to figure out that the darker shaded things are baddies and can damage you. I loved it though! :)

I really wanted to like this game, because I love cartoon art styles in games, but I just couldn't. The art for everything in the game, other than they main character, just felt lazy, and most of the difficulty came from bad controls, and the fact that your character's attack has such a bad hitbox. I feel like I would have rather just played a visual novel with this style, because the gameplay just ended up being frustrating.
