The Meek Prince Pixel by glock00

[raw]
made by glock00 for LD 40 (JAM)

The game tells the grand voyage of a young prince who must learn that the more he has, the harder it gets. Experience that the things you acquire can sometimes make your life harder and can weigh heavily on your shoulders. Therefore act responsibly and take only the things you really need! ----

We (my girlfriend and me) finally did our very first game! Prince Pixel is a classic plattformer game where you need to reach your home without collecting too many coins and diamonds along the way (Beware of dangers, too).

At first, we couldn’t imagine doing the art by ourselves but here you go! Thanks to Ludum Dare for motivating us to finish a game!

I finished the game! Nice entry, it feels hard at the first attempt, but with a little bit of practice, I finished it:) Hope its not Your last Ludum Dare! There are some glitches in crouching mechanics, but overall pretty fun game!:)

The controls could be a little more tight, and the low contrast between the diamonds and the sky made it difficult to see them, I picked them up by mistake simply because I didn't notice them. Overall, nice entry!

Thanks again for all your reviews!
@gassassin I found a fix for the crouch glitch but I am not sure if this is considered as rule breaking since it's a minor bug. We are definitely looking forward to the next LD :)
@oddlyfunctional Yes, the diamond's low contrast was partly intended! If you don't mind: What do you mean by "tighter controls"? Less input delay or the "feeling" in general?
Thanks again, this is just an awesome experience!

@glock00 The input delay but also the inertia, I think as you said the "feeling" in general could be improved as to make running around more pleasant :)

Not a bad idea to avoid collecting coins, especially because we as players are basically taught to collect every coin we find in every single game we play. So I found myself jumping for coins halfway through the level until I remembered that that was not actually a good thing

The graphics and color choices combined with the story make the game feel like running through a childrens book. I'd recommend keeping all pixels the same size though. So just draw the coins smaller instead of scaling, because it makes the scene look incoherent... Also the background is very blurry which is another problem with scaling pixelart. Try setting the filter mode to "point (none)" in the unity sprite import settings, then you should be able to scale without those artifacts if you do want a different resolution in the background (which I actually think is alright for background scenery).

Until next Ludum Dare!

This was pretty difficult. It was pretty short but I actually liked that. It fit the difficulty and made it so people would be less likely to give up. The art wasn't great but it was very consistent, so it felt like it had a style. I thought the idea of making the coins and gems be in normal coin spots instead of obstacle spots was nice. That set it apart from a lot of other games that use the same idea.

Very very difficult. The platforms are a bit slippery on the edges and there are some places which are impossible to avoid wealth (hihi). The graphics are charming but somewhat inconsistent. SFX is a bit too loud.

@somethinboutgames Yes, it's kind of contra-intuitive which is what we wanted :D Thanks for your tips on pixel art! I appreciate you took time for that!
@pablo-abraham Thanks!
@MrChippy Thanks for your feedback. Some people found it rather easy so I am glad you struggled a bit ;) We are happy you liked the style!

@pcmxms Hey, thanks for your feedback! I have reduced the SFX volume already for Post-LD ;) Hihi, "wealth" is really the first term we sticked to :D

Awesome entry, I don't know why but man I found this hard lol! I managed to finish after a few minutes though, really fun would be awesome if it was a bit longer and there were checkpoints or something, the art work could possibly do with a bit of polishing too but other than that it was a really fun game. Well done! :)

Cute little game! It is very counter-intuitive to avoid the coins, that's really funny. ^^
The snake was a bit fast for me and I was surprised everytime that I couldn't jump on it to kill it. ;) If you want to go crouching under something, but you were already standing near the edge of something, you couldn't crouch. The coin sound has a little 'tap' in the end here. I enjoyed playing your game and got till the end! My record is with 4/10 wealth. :)
