Bamboo Life by candlesan
I've always wanted to make a potentially casual audience game that borrows concepts from Skyblock modded Minecraft, Factorio, and Clicker Heroes. With some influences from Takenoko (the board game) I thought "Small World" was a great theme to explore making an approachable version of these games.

I stream the development of my Ludum Dare games on Twitch. If you enjoyed this game then give me a follow! :) You can also follow me on Twitter I always announce when I'm going live with game development.

A bit repetitive for me personally but I can see the appeal for some certainly. Nice compo game.
It would have been nice to be able to move the map because when we reach the screen limits and we want to place new things, we also click on the buttons and create objects that we don't want by mistake.
I'd love to see this developed into a full game. If you ever do, please let me know! micah@addictivecode.org
This was great. Why are games like this so oddly compelling (maybe I should have been a farmer).
Plus, PANDAS and KOALAS together at last!

If I have something to criticize, it would be the camera and how it sometimes doesn't seem to zoom out enough for you to do your expanding without pressing other buttons, which is a bit irritating.
Other than that though, it's a very good game. I'm impressed!

@askania-m @devastus @zarkonnen @kasarun I definitely agree about the camera. I worked on some of the camera logic up until the end and then accidentally introduced a bug at the 11th hour :( I'm sorry for any issues it caused for you playing.
@jorbits @kasarun @croze @paulhocker @h2n0 @askania-m thanks for sharing screenshots of your game session! Makes me feel warm and fuzzy inside to see everybody enjoying the game. I know with Ludum Dare there are so many games to play and it's flattering to know you showed your interest by taking the time to really play the game but also share what you did with us here on ludum dare.
@askania-m and @croze in particular, you have some nuts bases :)
A lot of folks commented they were impressed to see how much was done. I appreciate this compliment. It's crazy that we can work hard for 48-hours and feel like there's still so much to do sometimes it's easy to just see the flaws in our own games. I stream all of my Compo Ludum Dare game jams on twitch so you can see the development of a game like this from beginning to end, if you're interested I'd appreciate the follow.
The controls were really tight, too, like if I hammered repeated clicks on something that kicked off a progress bar, you didn't ignore my inputs! You queued them up and I got what I asked for. Very important small touches like that count for a lot in my opinion. Also effective: the camera nudging out as I build in a nice way, and the really clear rotate-icons above the animals. This was all very smooth and well done. Even the two humble sound effects were very effective, and the rising pitch of the "grow faster" was nice.
The art is simple, but I appreciated that every bit of it was focused around *transparency*. For example when I read the description of the pool I was uncertain of exactly which squares it would impact. But when I placed one to test, you delivered the goods by having a small watery particle thing float up from the affected squares. That's just one example but I think you have graphical transparency through to every single game rule as far as I can tell - which is excellent.
I really have just nothing to complain about. The trophy came at the right time in the experience so I didn't feel like the game was asking too much of my time for an LD. The only thing I can even think of that stymied me slightly was my mental model of how the koala would work from reading the text. The word "travels" in the description made me think he would walk around, but this didn't matter as I knew I was unsure so I built him near a panda just in case, and it worked out.
Very strong entry with craftsmanship in all the details!
The graphics are really well done and fit the style well, and the gameplay is excellent and very well balanced. Though it would be nice if you could move the camera around. Overall an excellent game!
Super fun to play and very addicting. I had a blast playing it because it felt that all the pieces were on its places. Add BG music and released it. Amazing entry.
I must say the explanation of the things were not very clear, and I was glad I saw some screenshots here on this page to see how everything worked.
i also wanted to say that at the end my computer was lagging from about 50 soils with growing plants... not sure why it slows down so quickly...
PROS
- Well put-together idle/building game
- Creative intepretation of the theme
CONS
- Buttons at top can be clicked by accident when trying to build near the top

For a compo game it has solid graphics and sound effects. I think for this kind of game it is ok to have no music. It was well made overall.
I would have liked the mouse wheel to switch through the items. Also it would be great if the game kept running in the background.
I did not get how the koalas work, I tried placing them facing bamboo. Only after looking at screenshots here in the comments I got it.
Really enjoyed it, nice game, nice concept, and good pace ! Only bug I found is when you erase everything, you will not be able to place blocks anymore. Except that, really great work on this compo ! Congratulations !

Congratulations to a Top 20 spot!
