The Kindercatch by LillyByte

[raw]
made by LillyByte for LD 44 (JAM)

Beware little kiddes, the Kindercatch. Close your door, lock your latch, lest your life and soul he will snatch.

YOU are the Kindercatch and your life comes at a cost... the cost of innocence. In order to keep the bargain for your dark soul, you must catch and dispatch as many little souls as possible. However, it may not be as easy as you would think, they can be... sneaky.

How To Play: A/D or Arrow Keys to move left/right, W or Up Arrow to float, and Space to Slash. Hunt the children, while avoiding the dogs. You float, don't fly. Just tap 'W' or 'Up' to stay adrift, you will come down automatically.

Game Tip: Children are hard to catch near their homes, stalk them from the air and catch them away from their house. Houses are also dangerous, children are more likely to release their dogs from their home if they see you nearby.

Art is strong in this game, I really enjoyed the visuals, and the voice of this guy scared the hell out of me, however children voice volumes sound a bit loud in my opinion.

About the gameplay I liked the controls but it was a bit difficult to catch children, maybe there are many houses in the neighborhood :)

Beautiful art! Really loved the way shadow and light mix together.
I didn't undertand how to consume a soul, tho.
And the dogs... They are evil!

Great art and voice acting! Not the game to play just before I am about to go to sleep though.. Great work!

Loved the art, mood, and sound. Dogs were a bit hard to see at times, and the children got to the doors too quickly for me. I had so much fun playing it, and it's one I'll be coming back to to play more of! Amazing work!

Love the aesthetic! The feel of the game was nice as well; normally I dislike games where the difficulty comes from the controls, but I felt like this was well-balanced here by the stupidity of the children: It just seems true to the experience of being the Kindercatch that getting your own floating butt to turn around would be the hard part. I found myself wishing for a little more depth to the gameplay, but more in the sense of "this is fun, I want more" instead of that there was something missing.

The idea of the game is pretty creepy, and the voice of catcher make all the atmosphere!

Very creepy, I love it! Everything works really well together. I think the only thing that could be improved is a bit more of a dog warning.

I really wanted like this game because of the amazing art but I kept dying because the witch is actually a turtle in disguse x.x, I felt that the houses were waay too close together and for me, most times when I were close to getting a child... oh hello doggo xD but I look forward to seeing an expansion on the game <3

Congrats, well done.

I liked the art and the voices. It's hard to get the kids.

Please, rate my game and leave some feedback too =]

Awesome atmopshere. Very creepy.. and it felt strange to be shouting things like "Quick, kill the kids!" or "Oh no, a doggo!" or "Let me eat you!" haha. everything tied together really well, I liked this. The art, music and general mood was fantastic. Took a little time to get used to the levitating controls, but got used to it in the end! I'm wondering how / if it could be expanded upon to allow longer gameplay, any ideas?

Art and mood and music are EXCELLENT, but it was really difficult to actually play? Spent like three tries and couldn't get more then a single kill. AI behavior and when they could "see" me was confusing.

Well that was creepy. Not sure if I enjoyed it, but it was certainly an interesting concept. It was a little hard figuring out what I was doing for a while, because I just seemed to be able to press and hold down the right arrow key and spacebar and get points, and there wasn't any reason to move upwards or change direction as far as I could tell.
The audio was good, and the art style works for what you were going for (I got a strong Limbo vibe from the glowing eyed kids). Not a bad effort for a weekend, and an interesting take on the theme.

@cnatalo What browser are you using? If it isn't Chrome or Firefox, the HTML5 version is probably not going to work, and you'd have to use the desktop variant.

what most caught my attention was the "Limbo" style art.

Congratulations for the game!

Really well put together game! I love the art style. The voice acting and visuals made the atmosphere very creepy and immersive. However, I feel like the music could have been a bit creppyer to better match the rest of the game. Regardless, nice work! :)

Nice game. Great art and very creepy voice acting. A bit too difficult to catch children since they run away to their houses too fast. Maybe try adding more space between houses.

Overall, Good job!
