the rts part is really well made i just wish there was some more depth to it, the platforming is charming in its mayhem
I won the battle but the game did not progress only giving the option for retreat.
Just add some music/sfx and improve the text feedback on resources and you have a genre breaking classic on your hands! Good luck.
Anyways, I like this a lot (which is a first). The transition to orthographic mode for the "2D" part is preeeeeetty sweet -- I've always been fond of the orthographic cam in practice.
Spawning cloud layers: I'd suggest keeping them static instead, as the WebGL build was hitching noticeably. Besides, I'm pretty sure I managed to get my army to despawn on the first run by simply jumping up to the top level before they had a chance to catch up. On another occasion, one of my own soldiers pushed me off a cloud and we had to restart the fight.
Different stages are nice, but perhaps consider gating resources somehow, so that I can't amass an army of 30/60/70 guys (at every stage) and crush the opposition without even caring.
But yeah, all in all great work. Nice job! It's actually a game that isn't terrible! I should look for more of these.
During my first ascent, I would have loved to have a little more information as I didn't know what was my objective and I lost most of my troops because they didn't have time to follow me. (I ended up dying trying to go back down to get my troops). Anyways, it is not hard to understand once you try a couple of times.
The climbing battle system feels very hands off though, you just leap up a level, wait for the enemy count to decrease, and repeat. I'm not even sure if I have any good ideas for improving on that particular part, perhaps add some controls to the military during it, either by tracking them onto the same cloud layer as you or simply by having them stick close unless ordered otherwise.
The art is effective, the UI is neat and understandable, and it's real fluid too, I didn't have any lag on the WebGL. The transitions of the two modes is top notch, and the idea of unlocking the rts in the assault is cool. A really good job !
For a jam game there isn't much more to add but if you wanted to work more on it I guess : managing the rythm between assault and rts a bit better and being a bit clearer on how the game works. Having a bit more control during the assault could be cool. There are also a few bugs to crush (like falling from the sky for instance) but I didn't have any crash and the game was still playable so it's okay really.
I do have a crushing question tho : What did those poor sky people ever do to us ?
Anyways great job man, especially for a compo, especially for a first jam  !
The main thing for you to improve is player feedback. Be it visual, textual or sound ou always have to make sure you are leading the players to where they are supposed to go. The UI didn't help much, and the font choice made it a little harder in this aspect.
Also, the little smash-bros-like platform in the start of the platformer made me lose half of my huge army every start of the battle! xD
But I really liked the 3D models (they are cute af) and think the concept is excellent. Reminded me of one of my favorite games growing up, ActRaiser!
Overall, great job!
I've never ever created an RTS and I also wanted to make some sort of RTS next time, only if it fits the theme :p
Great work!
Please also check out my game, if you have any time
Fun game! Hopping up through the clouds and slaughtering people was really satisfying. Once I unlocked archers and pikeman it got pretty brutal. I think I would have liked to be able to attack also.
btw, minor bug to report: if you press down while you're on the ground in platforming mode, you fall through the earth.
