Super Fun Action Chess by seano
It's SUPER, it's FUN, it's ACTION ...chess!
This games tries to combine the rules and pieces of chess with the rules of a real time action game.
HOW DO I PLAY? 1. Click on your pieces to select them. 2. White circles appear where the selected piece can move. 3. Red Tiles appear where the enemy piece can be taken.
* UPDATE * HOW DO I TAKE A PIECE/ KILL A PIECE? 1. If your piece is moving and the other piece is not, you kill the other piece 2. If both of the pieces are moving, it FAVORS the piece that moved first 3. It FAVORS the initial piece, it still has random chance of the other piece killing you!
* UPDATE * WAIT, WHY DOES IT RANDOMLY FAIL? I tried the rules with (first piece to move wins) and (last piece to move wins) when they are both moving. Both rules resulted in an unfair game as it created a single strategy that can be used to win every time. If I had more time, I would try more other options, such as just stopping both pieces. If you have any ideas, post them in the comments!
HOW DO I WIN AND SEE ALL OF THE STORY ? 1. Kill the king! 2. Don't let your king die.
TIPS: 1. Try to keep the pieces moving, don't wait to see if the move worked. 2. Use all the pieces, some are very effective. 3. Kill the king!
DEV NOTES: I found it hard to find the gameplay in this one. I think the theme makes it tricky as the games should be incompatible. I tried to focus on the execution, the art, sounds and atmosphere. If I had more time I would make it more like Rome Total War. I used Aseprite and the edge32 palette to try get that nice, solid art feel. All the colors in the game come from this palette. I used libgdx with java for the coding, finally getting a web build for Ludum Dare. Hopefully that helps everyone have a go. The sounds they make when they die are me, dying.
If you have any questions, leave a comment.

I had the same initial idea but stayed closer to chess and just allowed any piece to be move at any time. I think this maintains a large chunk of what makes regular chess interesting (the tactical positional mechanics). I wish I could have mine look and feel as awesome as yours though!
It was hard to play, my pieces kept moving back if I didn't hammer away like a madman.
Won first game and I think I skipped parts of the dialogue because of the frantic clicking. Was surprised there was another character though!
Sound and music good, would've enjoyed if each piece had its own sound :)
Well done!
I like the idea, although I've played a few different real time chess games before. The music is pretty intense and fits the game.
I experienced a lot of glitches in the movement and capturing (web version), I couldn't get a grasp of how the capturing worked because of this.
Overall I like the style a lot, the graphics and mood come out on top in this one.
Even if the units didn't move particularly fast, the fact that you need to be aware of lots of them doing stuff at the same time made the game really intense. I really liked this.
Great job! :)
EDIT: and here I am doing free advertising for someone's channel, LOL
Also refreshing to have a story in this kind of game, well done!
 What I loved
* The whole vibe & artwork was on point!
* Music was just perfect for a high intensive clicking game like this
:thought_balloon: My thoughts:
* As I said I'm not really a chess player but I enjoyed this
* This would be a great mobile game
* It's pretty easy once you realised how real time you can move everything accordingly to the computer
Good job man!
I have no idea why this happens, as apparently others don't suffer from this problem.
Anyways, I played your game on a different computer where it worked just fine. And maaaaan, is it a fine game! I love how frantic and chaotic it plays. Graphics and sound are awesome! The title and description bring to mind an 80s video game commercial in the best possible way!
I love your entry and just noticed it's a compo game, which makes it even more admirable!
Great job! Have a fish of gratitude 🐟 <3
