There was too much going on, and it would have worked better if you scaled down to focus on just collecting one item and did a score attack instead of adding in the recipes. Start small with adding all the necessary parts for a player to collect an item, and then either add multiplayer or allow a player to collect more items to complete recipes.
You spent too much time making everything pretty and not enough time making and testing a level. This game would have been just as good with cube placeholders until an artist swaps out the asset on the third day after you made sure the mechanics are solid. You had character design, but you should have focused more on level design.
