A Burning Rabbit Experiment by Jani Nykanen

Game concept:

You control a bunch of burning bunnies. The longer they keep burning, the more money they will yield once they hit the ground and die. That's the game goal: try to keep rabbits alive, but when they are precious enough, sacrifice them to earn money. However, every sacrifice will reduce one life, so make sure you'll have some lives in stock!

The bunnies will turn more yellow ("golden") over time, and once they hit the max gold value, they will also give an extra life once dying.

Note: It's not obvious, but the game ends when you run out of lives, not bunnies.

Controls:

  • Arrow keys: move
  • Down arrow: quick fall
  • Z: Jump, "flap"
  • Enter: pause

Music?

There was "music" for a short amount of time, but mystically it disappeared!

The graphics style is just amazing. The game logic is a little difficult, but it's very clearly high quality product, very similar to the 1980's commercial games. Getting that high level quality in such short amount of time is very good archievement.

Stunning graphics. I think you've inspired me to try pixel art next time, it looks so cool when done well.

Really well done  the bunnies are a bit hard to control, but that's what makes the game challenging.

Very good looking graphics and responsive controls. The only problem is that the tutorial diplay time is too short. Overall good game!

Liked the art style and also the mechanics have lots of depth, and have lots of potential for even more depth. And controls are well implemented!

I'm a bit sad that there isn't any music

Also maybe the game is not for me, but controlling multiple bunnies at the same time was a bit hard for me

Keep it up!

I feel like there is too much happening at once. There are also sometimes two rabbits on screen at once, which doesn't help either. Though it was funny game and the graphics looked really good.

The graphics are amazing! And the gameplay fun, although some things happen and I'm not sure if I have control of them or not, and when you respawn sometimes you just don't have a close by platform to land on. Although the double jump definitively helps.
Other than that, the visuals and sfx are awesome!

I really like the graphics, clean and easily readable. The fact that you can go out of one end of the screen and into another really confused me, but that's just not being used to it, I guess. I think you have a nice little platformer here.

controlling many rabbits at the same time nearly impossible, but still a very nice game

This is one of those hard as nails games where I tend to get hooked trying to improve my score even by one point.
Managing two rabbits at the same time (perhaps it's more than two, but I haven't managed to keep more than one alive for long  ) is super challenging and adds a whole new layer of complexity, cool detail!

Graphics are amazing. I really missed having music (it can be hard to get everything done in 48h, so it's understandable), but other than this you've got a really solid entry.

Congrats!

Wow this is one tough game, don't let the cutesy art style fool you! Speaking of which, can we agree this is one of the best looking games this jam? I love pixel art and it is phenomenal, especially when we take to account low resolution the sprite were made with. Astonishing work! Love it.

At first I had no idea what was going on, just giant moving pixels in my face  Good word! You nailed the aesthetics, the artwork is very consistent. I can't really explain why, but I do feel disconnected from the controls a little, maybe there could be some more immediate feedback on the rabbit as it moves? No idea. Again, good work, especially given the Compo constraints!

In another timeline, this game could have been a Gameboy cartridge sold in a supermarket ! :v:
Really nostalgic entry, I really like the arts and sounds, that remind me some past games.
Really good job !

Very tight and cohesive gameplay. Interesting idea as well. My one critique is that the background is too saturated making it much harder to distinguish what's foreground and background in tight situations. Great entry!

it took a while for me to get used to the controls and movement game mechanic, but once I did I found it highly rewarding and the right level of challenge. The artwork is neat and consistent, fits with the mood of the game. I would have perhaps made the background less darker and desaturated, maybe just to help with focussing on the main event?

I found trying to balance more than one bunny to be kinda frustrating, but I did enjoy the concept. The graphics were very nice as well.

More than one bunny and only 1 life is hard because if one dies you lose.

Graphics are great, love the retro vibe. My only gripes are the controls being a bit wooly and that your new bunny spawns way too quickly after you die
