Nitro Racer by stigrv

[raw]
made by stigrv for LD20 (COMPO)
A simple racer where the goal is to stay close to your opponents in order to survive.

Please note that this game works best in Firefox.

Edit: I've added a fixed version that corrects a few things in the compo version. The compo version should still work fine in Firefox though.
- Removed render bug that caused Chrome to crash when out of health, which caused you to be unable to die
- Better detection of checkpoint pass, making it harder to miss lap completion
- Slightly better looking tiles and death screen

This was pretty good mechanics-wise, and nailed the theme. The explosions took me a bit my surprise and practically ended my life, but I had my volume up a bit high.

Excellent use of the theme and an impressive game considering the platform :)

Great idea, and solid execution! I'd love to see more variations on this mechanic.

Very nice and smooth on IE9. I had no sound at all. On the second level the other cars got ahead too far and suddenly the game was stuck.
Very interesting mechanic. You should actually force the player to get first place, even with the others attached to you ;)

Pretty slick for HTML5! Bit buggy though - I spun off, lines turned red, and the car just span indefinitely without blowing up.

I think this game is rather interesting, it has awesome music but I think I got stuck in the first lvl because of a bug.
Overall very refreshing game idea and very thematic.

Full marks for innovation on this one, very cool concept and you proved it could work!

Didn't really buy the post-apocalyptic set up when it opened onto green fields, blue water, and healthy trees. ;)

All in all, a great effort and would love to see this developed further.

It was fun - personally, I'm not one for racing games, but it was a very interesting concept, and well executed too.

Nice game. Interesting mechanics, although it is quite hard for me.
Totally great on community effort with your sheet about used technology. Liked it. Last thing missing is just a timelapse.

@Endurion - I'm afraid Microsoft hasn't gotten around to implement a working version of their HTML5 audio
@Dark Acre Jack - I never got time to draw the destroyed tiles. On the other side, I never got around to implement the nitros in the title either :)
@joekinley - I'll hopefully make a timelapse for the next competition

Interesting idea and quite well done! Must say this is the best HTML5 entry I've played so far... most of them just crash :P.

I assumed I had to finish first, which made for an interesting get ahead but not too far ahead tension... got one of the AI cars stuck in terrain at one point leading to death :(...
