Loonadrift by ryantouk
*** Mac versions uploaded! Literally my first Mac program ever, so please report any bugs!
New, post-comp (72 hour) version available:
____ Double-tap to move faster
____ Health rewards for many kills
____ Choose your balloon's color
____ Deaths are more user-friendly (wha?)
____ Minor tweaks
____ Do NOT judge this version for the competition!
Mission Briefing:
Help a displaced balloon survive the dangerous world as long as possible -- for example, by pouring buckets of nails onto camels.
Post your records!
Controls:
Arrow keys to move.
Control to shoot.
M and S to toggle music and sound.
(Gamepads/joysticks work too!)
...
I told myself that
(A) I would not make another MSPaint-esque sidescroller
(B) I would attempt a moderately substantial storyline
but I found the concept of a helpless balloon floating around with firearms too irresistable!
Made with PureBasic. Music was generated with an alpha version of my own text-to-music tool!

Excellent work, congrats on finishing!
Simple yet very effective.
I did initially think you had to watch out for your string being snagged on stuff. Good use of it being health.
Madness everywhere ;) Really crazy and thank <insert deity> also plays very nice!
I love the art!
The flamethrower was a bit disappointing, I expected the enemies to catch on fire and scream horrifically, in contrast with the cartoon kiddie mood :P
I'm a bit torn in the "Innovation" category. You did make a game about a balloon with guns, but on the other hand it was just a little side-scroller like millions of others. I guess you deserve the credit. Also, shame on you for not posting progress!
About 450 ABUs...
*** SPOILER ALERT ***
Toaster :D! Awesome!!!
STOP into POTS :P...

"It's really hard to actually aim the weapons, so most of the time they just get you killed when you try to use them instead of dodging the enemies." - I agree. Some sort of aiming assistance or indicator would be useful. Otherwise, unless you have one of the better weapons, it's safer to just play defensively.
"the background is terrible" - Bad? Yes. Terrible? Maybe. It was just the quickest background I could implement that gave a sense of movement. Another game I'm working on has the same issue - my friend tested it, and thought the background were objects he could jump on to...
"I expected the enemies to catch on fire and scream horrifically" - Loonadrift 2?
"it was just a little side-scroller like millions of others" - Yep, I know, I resisted it at first but gave in. Not expecting a high Innovation score here...
@everyone -- This was my first competition entry ever (entered the jam once before) and I am surprised by the positive feedback! Thanks to everyone who played!
PS. My personal record is 930.9 ABU - good luck beating that.
