Chemical A-21 by ryantouk

[raw]
made by ryantouk for LD21 (-)
*** Post-comp version (do not rate!) ***
- [tab] key toggles less/more detail (may run smoother)
- mouse cursor is now shown in windowed mode (plays nicer)
- I have not accessed a Mac yet to compile a Mac port... (soon!)

Chemical A-21 is leaking throughout the complex and, for whatever reason, only YOU can stop it!

Use the left/right mouse buttons to place and pick up barriers to block the A-21 from spreading to the edges.

You have to be quick, but steady too, as a single gap in your walls can ruin you.
Some levels require a bit of planning/strategy...

Good luck! I'm interested to know how hard it is / how long it takes.

Where is the source?
As far as I know, the source must be included.

Source is included with the game, I'll mention that.

Link to game appears to be broken.

(?) That link works fine for me... but I uploaded it elsewhere and changed the link just to be safe.

Love the art style, and it's a really neat concept. Mouse control didn't feel especially great, I think I would have preferred a real cursor to just the highlighting the selected box.

Pretty cool though!

Yeah, I think the same way about the cursor instead of the box thingie.

Ah! Great concept, but I agree with the other commenters; there needs to be a cursor.

Yeah, the mouse control has felt 'wrong' to me since the beginning... I have uploaded a post-comp version that shows the cursor (which definitely helps) and adds a hotkey to reduce draw detail.

Don't rate this version! These are technically new features.

Very pretty, loved the tech minimalism.

Very difficult for me, perhaps a slightly easier couple of warm up levels would help.

Windowed mode (even post compo version) doesn't work at all, screen doesn't get cleaned with frame so everything is being overdrawing.

Luckily I tried fullscreen...
Theme is very good and innovative (I've considered something similar, but I discarded it and I've not seen this idea of stoping the spread of poisonous gas being used by anybody else yet) and gameplay would probably work, but there are two problems - one is controls, I got stuck on third level in ducts for a long time, because sometimes I just couldn't draw the blocks.
The other is difficulty, I gave up on a level after ducts after few attempts and I think it's insane :) Maybe after a lot of attempts I'd be able to orient myself and maybe have a chance, but...

Thanks for the feedback guys. The levels were made hastily, so the difficulty is probably too high (which sucks, since there is an 'ending' of sorts).

There are basically one or two specific ways to beat the harder levels, and until you figure them out, it's probably frustrating...

Shigor - if you read this - could you retry the post-comp version? I uploaded another version which should fix the screen bug that happens on some specific video cards. The controls are slightly better in windowed mode since the cursor should now be visible. (You can try Tab too.)

Gameplay aside, I was happy with the theme and surprised there aren't more similar games. When "Escape" was announced, I assumed 50% of games would involve the player trying to escape a place, 25% would involve trying to STOP something from escaping, and 25% would involve escaping something abstract (like everyday life, etc). I went with the middle type :)

Neat idea! I heaven't seen this feature extended so much before.

Great game ! You should advise the player to hold mouse button, it make the game experience really better. The blue and yellow dots mechanic is good. I understand the need for step by step tutorial, but the lack of yellow in the first levels make them harder than the others. I had fun playing your game !
