Need For Code : Escape by K1NET1K

[raw]
made by K1NET1K for LD21 (JAM)
My game is incomplete, hence the name Need For Code. Its a pistake of Need for Speed.

This is my first time hearing about Ludum Dare. It is also the first time I have ever made a game. If I wasn't watching Notch's stream I possibly would have finished.

I thank you guys for the inspiration to finally make games after years of making boring client websites and business apps.

I uploaded the game anyway. I'm pretty proud of what I did manage to get done, aside from spending 75% of the budget on art....

The screencap looks cool, but all I see in the web version is a car driving on a pretty picture... (I run right over the cars) I love the speedometer thing, but it only appears when I drive in the blue out-of-bounds area :-)

hey i never said the cars were actually 'real' :)

Car turns really slowly for a top-down racer. Since that's the only thing to the game right now aside from what could of been, that leaves a lot to be desired.

You made a very common first timer mistake, art is not the prority. And yes, the movement does not feel like a car at all, but it feels slipery, maybe you could adapt that movement physics to a Zamboni Race Game :-D (Ice resurfacer: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_resurfacer).

The big ludum dare traps: chatting in IRC, watching Notch's livestream, and making too much art :)

Your cars look fantastic, I hope you come back to do some more work on this some time.

Yeah, next time start with boxes and work on the driving algorithm first. That said, I've tried driving algo's before and they took me a lot longer than 48 hours to get right, and that was for a tank, which is probably a lot easier. Good potential! I really wish you could run over the police (I'm a bad person) and damage the cars. Even just running over the police would have made it a lot more fun. Best of luck.

You definitely need to be careful about making too much art; it's definitely a nice thing (and can be pretty motivating) to have good art, but the priority is the game mechanic.

I hope to see you in the next LD.

Hi, I think you're up to a good start, especially if you've never made a game before :). The controls of the car needs to be tweaked. Feels like origo is to far down(?), and the turning is too fast. I hope you keep making games, and you might have the start for an engine you can use in the next LD =).

This is an awesome start for a first time attempt at writing a game, and I really hope you keep at it! I actually really liked the slippery controls and thought they were quite fun, although it felt more like a hovercraft than a car, haha.

Don't take any criticisms too hard, and consider this a lesson learned- some of the best games here are just circles and rectangles without any art at all. Art should be the last thing you worry about when you make a game, and that's an important lesson to learn, so your time wasn't wasted.

Just think- you've done more in 48 hours than most people who think about game programming ever do, so if you give yourself another month, what awesome things could you pull off?

thanks for all the positive responses guys. i am continuing to work on this game, and hope to have a playable version in the very near future.

Promising, but it looks like there was quite a bit of work left. Definitely run with this, though, it's a great start!

PS: I liked the controls as well, though they did take some getting used to and were not very realistic :)

Good concept and physics seem nice, but obviously unfinished, so not much gameplay. Perhaps you should have prioritized gameplay mechanics over assets. I'd love to have an epic cop chase.

It's a pity you couldn't make a "real" game out of this. The basic idea looks promising. The controls, especially turning, of the car should become improved.

Not much of a game, even if the graphics are so pretty. The car's physics are completely wrong and doesn't feel like a car at all...

Hope you've learned the lesson and next LD don't waste time watching others ;-)
