[raw]
made by razieliyo for LD35 (JAM)
Travel with Pheee, a shapeshifter capable of transforming in nature elementals when in danger, in his journey inside No Land.

Your task is to collect all the abilities and travel through floors, but take care, since enemies will be stronger in each floor! And remember to use buffs.

If you use Linux, please install allegro5.0 in your OS way.

CONTROLS:

* ARROWS: movement in the map / move cursor
* ENTER: accept or explore in map
* BACKSPACE: cancel
* TAB: open minimap in the map
* SPACE: in the map, opens the ability menu, and press ENTER to view info about selected ability.

ABILITIES & STATS

To check an in-game help about abilities, press SPACE in the map screen, and then press enter to view a description. You will find special colored tiles to get more abilities. Interact with them with ENTER to learn new abilities.

There are 3 stats:

ATK: increments the damage done by a damage ability
DEF: decreases the damage received by a damage ability
AGI: influences the probability to miss (if attacker agi < defender) and critical hit (if attacker agi > defender)

Pheee will have a currently assigned element, depending on the element associated to the last ability he performed. Each element gives you an increased stat and a decreased stat. For each element, these are the modified stats:

Water (blue): + AGI, - DEF
Gaia (green): + DEF, - ATK
Fire (red): + ATK, - AGI

Abilities can be from the following types.

* Deal damage
* Status effect
* Deal damage + status effect
* Increase a stat in the player

Status effects are:

* Stunned: when an enemy is stunned, it won't attack in the next turn. Shard is a starter ability that only stun enemies in block of 2x2. Pressure shot is an ability that affects a single enemy, deal damage and stun.
* Burnt: some fire abilities can cause the enemy to be burnt and lose health in each turn. Torch is an ability that makes burn a single enemy. Blaze deals damage and burn, and affects a block of 2x2 enemies.
* Regen: you use this ability and heal yourself during a series of turns.
* Demolecularize: increased agility. Third ability of water.
* Mega Shell: increased defense. Second ability of gaia.
* Flame Fist: increased attack. Second ability of fire.

Find yourself the posibilities of the rest of the abilities by using them and checking the info via SPACE in map screen and then ENTER to check info about an ability.

KNOWN ISSUES:

* Map generation can get you stucked.
* Bad balance.
* Easy fart jokes

The game looks and sounds very good. I liked the pixel art and music.

The balance makes it extremely difficult to play. I went for two entire levels without any enemies and then hit two in a row on level 3. I could barely beat the first one and the second killed me instantly.

Some explanation of what the abilities do would be nice.

Interesting game. The pixel art is pretty good. Though, the window is absolutely tiny, and I think it's too difficult - I haven't been able to survive more than one battle without dying.

I was stuck on floor 2 with a burning ennemy not being able to damage him ( fart and gob deals no damage ). Apart of that I like the minimalist low rez interface and sfx. The ennemy design is also very imaginative, I love all of them

Hi all, I'm sorry, the game is a little unbalanced, but it's playable if you understand the abilities. You can not just go and attack, you need to use buffs, stunts and the like.

Also, I placed some explanations on what the abilities do which you can access by pressing space on the map view, and then pressing enter on the ability.

I'm not a huge RPG person, but for me I felt like the battles drag on a lot, would be nice to have fights that can be completed in 5 or 6 moves instead of 10+ moves. I'd also really like to see the UI improved a bit - use keys that are closer together, and when attacking auto-select the first enemy instead of a blank space.

Music has a really nice feel to it, and sound effects fit well.

I like the small format and the pixel art, but I'm having trouble with the fight. Sometimes pressing enter will trigger another attack although I was just wanting to skip the small text after the previous attack. Good job!

For those who don't want to look up the proper commands, these install the proper allegro version on ubuntu 15.10:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:allegro/5.0
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install liballegro5-dev

The game is kind of weird. Art style is great, and the small screen has a nice aesthetic to it. The fighting makes no sense to me however. So I walked around a bit, and died a few times, but did not get to see much more of the game. The attacks only seemed to hurt me somehow. Maybe next time try to balance it, and if you're not succeeding then make it too easy instead of too hard. If the next time the game looks and plays as nice as this time, and is a bit more balanced, you're in for a treat!

Graphics are awesome, especially for the characters.

From what I've seen the map generation worked well, instead the one big flaw was indeed combat.

Not only fights were very long & repetitive, but the cursor not remembering who you just targeted nor what you just did makes you press a lot of keys unnecessarily. Also the delay between two combats even more annoying than in early Final Fantasy games - I ended up ragequitting after 3 long fights in between of which I barely had time to walk.

Too bad because these problems boil down to balancing issues... Otherwise it would have been an excellent entry. I'm curious about the amount of content hidden after level 2.

I died quickly after meeting three enemies at once in floor 2, but this is a fun game!

I really enjoyed playing this game and it surly partially is because I generally enjoy these types of games, but this one was really well made and I actually like a lot the screen size and how everything is compact in it, well done!

I'm a sucker for playing games in tiny windows, so I'm biased immediately.

Love the graphics, sound, and the humour.

That said, I did have an issue where I couldn't seem to exit out of a fight, seems like I was stuck in it.

Nice one! Love the pixel art style and, strangely enough, that tiny little window. IMO it helps the player concentrate on small amount of things and makes the simplicity of design feel and look better. But sometimes it becomes extremely difficult to deal with all this huge amount of skills in only 3 rows on the screen.

Simple JRPG. There are just too many random encounters to my taste...

However, the abilities and their side effects were quite nice! I found that using shard->torch->gob->repeat (and occasionally regen on the turn before the last) was way too OP... it's probably less so on the later floors, but on the first few ones there was no way to lose using that strategy.

All in all, nice game!

Oh, and fyi, the music stopped playing after the first encounter.

I'm curious... Was this also done for the #LOWREZJAM or is the low resolution just a coincidence?

Hi GFM, thanks for your comments!

The resolution is mid coincidence mid lowrezjam. I recently participated in the lowrezjam and wanted to do something in the mood. The screen is too large for the lowrezjam anyway (it's 80x80, lowrezjam is 64x64).

About the music, it seems there were a few bugs with the audio. I don't know if it can be about allegro, since I'm using 5.0 here and last stable is 5.2. Probably it's my fault, but couldn't solve it.

Pestel Crew, sorry about that bug, and thanks for reporting. Never happened to me, I'll try to fix that.

Nice pixel art and music. It was a bit hard to me to understand how to play this at first.
