Bubba's Escape by puffi

[raw]
made by puffi for LD21 (-)
Bubba's Escape is a block sliding puzzle game where you have to guide Bubba out of his workplace storage facility before his angry boss comes to yell at you!

This was my 1st LD48 ever so I started with very simple game design =) but I reached my goal and actually finished something, which is nice.

Controls:
Left mouse button - Select objects in the game area
Right mouse button - Undo

ps. Code is total mess (full of quick and dirty fixes)

It's kinda hard to tell what order to play the levels in, is it left to right or top to bottom? Besides that it's a good game. Gave up at the level in the screenshot.

Well there isn't a strict order to play the levels, but the top-left level is by far the easiest one and kind of works as "introduction".

And thanks for the comment

Congratulations on a great game! It took me a little while to realize I could move the red objects (presumably dynamite) to blow up blocks, but once I did realize this, I couldn't stop playing!

Thanks for the comment.

Yeah I should've added some sort of instructions to the game, but hopefully people can figure it out without too much of an effort, as there's relatively few objects in game.

Once I figured out how to play it was easy to blow through these levels. Very creative and would enjoy seeing more of this in the future.

Great concept! Simple to play, addictive, fun. Probably the LD21 game I've enjoyed the most so far. Congrats! :D

Thank you very much for your nice comments!

I have some plans on improving the game (actually quite major changes), tho I will rewrite the code from scratch as the code is just way too messy to start playing with.

Good job! Sliding block puzzles are nothing new, but the dynamite added some new layers to the classic formula. I'm kind of big on puzzle design, and I would have liked to see puzzles with fewer blocks. 6 blocks is plenty to make a very challenging sliding block puzzle requiring 30-40 moves, and the number of blocks are small enough for the player to wrap their head around, so they come away with a better appreciation of the solution. With 15 or 20 blocks, there's no way, there are so many billions of possible permutations of those blocks. But like I said, good job!

Thank you for your comment.

Yeah one part that I was able to give too little attention due to the time limit was the level design (which ofc makes or breaks puzzle games) which was bit of a shame.

But for the post-compo version I will definitely give level design the time it deserves and requires =)

Love the concept. Although this is more of a "build your own level" theme. Nice graphics, dig the style.

Cool style and a nice take on this type of sliding block puzzle. Took me a while to figure it out at first - and it'd be neat to see a "guideline" and walk-animation when you move the protagonist. Fun times.

It dies after I blew up something ... :( Otherwise great concept!

Thanks for the comments!

@barigorokari: Thats odd, which version (Win/Linux) were you running, were there any error messages in stderr ?

The testing of the Windows version was somewhat limited as I had hard time running it inside VM without 3d acceleration.

Great concept, indeed. I echo the comment that this game needs some instructions on the first level, as I was there staring and moving blocks waiting for Bubba to move himself or something :-)

Gosh, has been a while. I'm still working on the post-compo version of the game. I pretty much have the design laid down, some code and lots of graphics done, but it has been pretty hectic at work causing me to have only little time and "strenght" to work on this project.

But I promise it'll get done sooner or later!
