ASSAULT THE DARK FORTRESS by FrankieSmileShow

[raw]
made by FrankieSmileShow for LD22 (COMPO)
My Ludum Dare 22 entry!
Join up a small team of intrepid adventurers as they explore an old, scary fortress.
Arrow keys move
X C S and D uses items when you found them (like the Sword)
press ESCAPE at any time to quit the game (sorry! no pausing. Didnt have time!!)

So! Was it a good idea to make a Zelda-like game for the Ludum Dare? You tell me!
The game is way too big. I didn't have time to place tiles in the rooms of the right side of the game, so half of the game is simple, ugly blocks over a pink background... whoops! Well, use your imagination! The rest looks decent enough though.
The game isn't finished at all, but its quite playable and actually takes a long while to explore. Which makes it likely there are some bugs. I couldn't even test the entire game yet as Im writing this! Ill get to it now, actually. Crossing my fingers...

I will probably properly finish up the game in the coming weeks. Finish up the tiles, add some new enemies, give it a proper ending... But its good enough for now. Enjoy!

I can't believe you created all this in just 48 hours! I would have kept playing for a lot longer but I found a bug where I left one room and entered another... inside a wall! I was stuck permenantly. :(

Awesome game. I'm surprised you were able to do this much in so little time.
The graphics are interesting- the style should hurt my eyes, but something about its chaoticness just WORKS, I think. It's fun to run around and cut up enemies, and I really liked exploring. The theme of 'alone' only kicked in later, but you kept to that- apart from all of the enemies. THe sounds that you did put in worked well, though it really needs a nice soundtrack to go with it. All in all, a very good game. Bravo.

RAGE!!!
This game is great, but after about 20 minutes of killin' and collectin' stuff, I walked down 1 screen and it booted me saying "You escaped..."
Aside from that, I really enjoyed this game and it is among the best I've seen so far.
There's something really satisfying about dropping some dynamite down as a cloud of enemies flock around it... BOOM!
Great work, give yourself a cookie.

Excellent entry, even my attention deficit disorder let me play it way longer then any other submissions... (well except mine, but that I had to do.... :)

Keep working on this. You have a really solid foundation. Yeah, it's basically a Zelda clone... but it's dang fun. KILLED BY SOME GIANT HOCKEY GUY?!?!?! lol

Good fun! Impressive amount of content too.
[SPOILERS]
I had somehow forgotten the LD22 theme while starting the game. Meeting the team I started thinking about how they would work together.. and then I come outside again and their gone. Their gear just strewn about the dungeon. I felt so alone.

Very impressive! As stated by yourself you probably should have limited the scope of your game more so that you could focus on the finer details like polish and more guiding the player through your game. Despite that, the graphics are really charming and it's just really fun to play! The only thing that bothered me about the graphics was the guys who move towards you at an arbitrary angle seemed to not quite fit the visual aesthetic as much because of how their sprites moved. I appreciated the strafe ability too. Scenario in the beginning maybe could have been emphasized a little bit more, but I'm not going to nitpick too much on narrative for an LD entry.

Also, needs music, needs music, deserves an awesome chiptune music track or two. =D
