HUG MONSTER by dr_soda

The Hug-Monster (-o^_^)-o can never get enough love or hugs, and is always happy to see you. Unfortunately, it's a little too excitable and at times doesn't seem to know its own strength.
You on the other hand are small and fragile, and most definitely want nothing more than to be left alone, especially from the big, scary Hug-monster!
How long can you avoid its warm, snuggly, and loving arms of death? Find out in this classic platformer!
The Hug Monster
The game is a Unity project.
- Unity3D - Written all in C# using MonoDevelop
- 2dToolKit libraries (Not included)
- Photoshop CS3
In my declaration I mentioned using 2DToolKit to programmatically create sprite animations, but I'm not sure whether its license allows me to include it as plain text in the Unity project. It's available in the Unity Asset Store, but at cost.
If that's not kosher for the Compo, then I'll happily resubmit it as a Jam entry.

Neat game!
I liked that in some levels I was able to "defeat" Hug Monster by tricking him into running off the level.
The ending was awesome.
And for those who enjoyed it, thank you for your kind words. :)
The hug monster is so cute <3, although I was a bit sad every time I saw him happily jump off a cliff to his death :~(. Poor hug monster.
I liked the idea, but I'm having difficulties playing the game. First, the controls are really sticky. It is very hard to gauge how much you need to run and jump to get atop a platform, and, when you fail, your guy gets stuck in mid air.
Second, the fourth level (third?) is a bit buggy. It is the first one where the hug monster does not begin behind you. When I try to reach for the house, it floats to the skies and disappears. Then if I die to try again, the house is not there anymore and the level is not winnable :-( </3
Hope you can solve your problems with sound, and thanks for talking about other people's games! :-D
A suggestion:
The character should face where the player is pointing, not where he is running too - it gets a bit easier to tell your brain that the character is trying to stop that way
I realized last night what would happen in level 4 too late to fix it. You're right that there's a bug, *but* It was actually designed to float away if you hit it with your head, but what I forgot was to reset it when you restart the level. If you jump down onto it from the top you can actually see the platform fall down. Part of me likes this, but part of me also doesn't. Maybe sfx would indicate that it floated away because you bonked it out of reach?
Anyway, the "I can't win the level anymore" has been resolved in the version I'm working on currently, but I don't think I can really submit that now and still be in-bounds in terms of the compo rules. Would a bug fix like that be by-the-book?
The whole game feels very neat. The control using aceleration really helps beating the plainness. It's a pity that there isn't a background music or sound effects.
Anyway awesome job for a 48hour entry!
Overall, good work!
Really liked it! Nice concept.
