Ravenwood by Danik

[raw]
made by Danik for LD22 (COMPO)
You are a lone cat, finding yourself in an unfamiliar place scattered with mysterious glowing orbs.

Arrows to move, Z or Up to jump, X or down to claw.

Unfortunately I didn't have time to add a satisfying ending, the current one leaves a lot to the imagination. I will add a better ending in a future version.

NOTE: Beware of flashing lights!

This was a very nice job - the mood was the best thing about this game, really. Despite having no mechanics in particular about being alone the atmosphere is very... Lonely, I suppose the word is.

Great little game. I love the style and the fact that it runs at 60fps, it feels very smooth and fluid. The "stay out of the rain" mechanic seems pretty cool, although I never really got hurt at all so I didn't even need to use it.

The end was a little anti-climactic, but it was enjoyable anyway... and I found the secret place, woulda been fun if there was something to do there, hah :)

Controls have a good feeling to them, so I played it to the end. Fun and moody!

Great graphics, gameplay, sound and atmosphere. I love the rain. Could have more story or attachment to the theme, though.

This entry was really great. I found it so fun that I kind of... er... beat it three times :)
With the exception of the humor category, you get A-1 ratings.

Like the graphics. Wasn't so big on the sound effects. I like your recharging system. I liked that I was quite afraid of the crows initially until I learned how to deal with them.

However, I've played about a zillion reasonably generic platformers already this LD, and this one was pretty characterless in terms of goals/objectives, so I didn't enjoy playing it much.

Oh, I tried falling through each of the holes in the rock (to my death) because there was no indication that there wasn't something cool down them.

Good game. Bottom line. Controls are solid, no bugs that I could fine. Good animations for everything. Well done.

Thanks for the comments and feedback!

Matt, yea I really wanted to add something interesting there, a kitten perhaps. :P No time to spare though.

Aslai, awesome. I'm really happy you liked it that much. :)

Increpare, thanks for the honest critique, it's much appreciated. Good point about the holes in the rock, I will do something to make it more obvously dangerous, like water. Or I might just add something cool down there.

Enigmatic. Cute graphics and great atmosphere, hard to go wrong with thunder and lighting.

awwwww look at cwute widdle kitty...

Awesome animations. Gameplay is solid too, I love flinging bugs (?) around. The "gain shelter from rain"-mechanic is nice aswell.

Sound: Beautifully simplistic. You don't even notice it, it blends that well into the scene.

Alright, now the parts that don't work: Screen-changes are sudden, abrupt, and gave me a mild case of motion sickness near the end. Controls on Z+X = bad, german and french keyboards have different layouts, have to distort hand (X+C is no problem, however). Fighting the ravens isn't much fun, fighting ground-enemies would be more so. The health-regen was quite slow, so slow in fact it was more efficient to tab out.

Still, awesome work. Keep it up! :-)

Art and sounds are very good and create great mood, but otherwise it's quite bland platformer, too bad :/ Are you going to upgrade it a bit? It's one of few games in compo with big potential just a day or two work away...

I found a secret place!

I'm a big fan of the art style, and I love the soundtrack. The controls feel overly sensitive, though. I didn't feel like I was really in control of the kitty.

Matthias, thanks for the critique! You are right about the quick screen transition, I tried making it slower and it was nicer. You can use Up+Down/Shift+Ctrl instead of Z+X if you want. How do you mean it is more efficient to tab out?

Jack, Shigor, dr_soda, thanks! I will work more on it soon.

Great game. Really liked the rain and cat animation. Palette is a little too flash-game-ish for me. Congratulations

On the tab-out:
The regeneration was so slow, and the wait was so uneventful, that I tabbed out and did something else for 3 minutes (never a good sign in a game :-) )

glad it was a cat and not a dog, excellent tail animation when sitting too.

Love the visuals. Reminds me of Another World / Flashback.
The little bugs also rock.
