Soliloquy by ratking

[raw]
made by ratking for LD22 (COMPO)
In this game you are split. You are one person, alone in a lifeless world - but you have two souls, which have to work together ...

Controls:
WASD / Arrowkeys - Movement
Space - Jump
1,2,3 / Mousebuttons - Soulswitching (don't do that in the first three levels :P)

Credits, where credits due:
I used this font: http://www.myfont.de/fonts/infos/5223-AEnigma-Scrawl-BRK.html
And this code: http://lukasz.dk/2011/05/01/pixel-perfect-bitmap-font-in-unity/#1 (Had to modify it, though)
Three samples from freesound.org for my "music".

// edit 1:
I made a post compo version which fixes the following problems:
- After dying, you controlled both souls when sometimes this wasn't good.
- Mouse sensitivity can be adjusted with N/M and was adjusted for Macs.
- The background noise loops now.

Brilliant concept! Challenging and fits the theme very well. A little hard on the eyes after a while though. The sound seemed to stop working after a few levels.

@Danik Thanks! The visuals are a problem, I know, but at least it looks a little bit different thanks to them. ;) BTW, thanks for noticing the sound bug, will do a fix soon.

I love it, but the visuals break my mind after a bit. It is a really creative idea!

Very, very innovative - I really like the idea. I mean, there are some 2D games using similar concept, but I don't think I've ever seen a 3D game like that. Congrats!

This is a great concept! I just have a few things. I felt like I could jump a really far distance and there was not much sound. I defiantly think you can continue with this concept. Good job!

It's a bit floaty and jumping feels more like a jetpack, but the idea is awesome. I had to stop cause I was getting dizzy though.

Awesome concept :) I especially love the use of checkerboard patters as opposed to alpha blending.

Excellent concept, though damn does it hurt my brain. I liked the audio, especially the creepy laughter. A shame it cut out, but I hear that's fixed in the post-compo version.

Nice game. The graphics are nice however I felt sick after a while, being split in two halves definitely hurts :)

I quit after the splitting, not pleasant. I liked the mood, graphics + laughter reminded me of killer 7, which is good!

Very excellent idea, and I get what you're going for. It gave me serious vertigo and I couldn't go on.

Hey guys, thanks for the kind words!

I am very sorry to hear how badly my game treats you! Perhaps I'll cut the effect down for some of you, but I don't know how yet. :-|

Interesting idea, but the splitting hurts my eyes, am I supposed to always be seeing both views even when I control only one? Seems pretty fun, but I don't think it's that strongly relevant to the theme. I like the visual style.

@pighead10: Yeah, sorry, not much sound to hear here. :(
@QXD-me: Yes, you're supposed to see both views all the time, this is pretty relevant especially in the last level. I think it emphasized the "Alone" topic quite well. :)

Nice little surreal and motion-sickness inducing platformer!

Good level-design, as in, it gets progressively harder and more complicated. The screen-overlay is brilliant, although highly disorienting.

Nice idea, but my head exploded after a while when trying to use soul switching (after I nearly ragequit on jumping platforms) - i got completely disoriented very soon and had no idea what to (well.. i had the idea, but i just wasn't able to navigate)

It is indeed hard to play, but mind boggling! I gave you 5/5 for innovation. Very well done.

Elegant visual style (even loved the garish palette), and brilliant concept - but quickly headache-inducing when the view splits. Had to stop playing on level 4 or 5 :(

Playing this after voting's over, I think it's perfect. The mechanic combined with the visuals creates a very interesting psychological effect that evokes a sensation of an out of body experience, and reminds me of thoughts and dreams about alternative perspectives. An example of how games can simulate even thought itself. It was challenging to learn to play this but I feel smarter now.

Far and away my favorite. I think this was vastly underrated in the 'fun' category.
