Overpopulous by Make A Game
"Overpopulous" is a game about space colonization.
Mengolia is overpopulated.
Major advancements were made in interstellar traveling to colonize other planets.
Today is the day the first manned shuttle will leave your planet in search of a new home.
But, oblivious to everyone, the shuttle is upside down.
And then it propels the whole planet through space.
You can still colonize though - at the speed of light!
How to play:
- Press the SPACE key to blast off!
- Use the A, D, left or right directional arrows to steer your ship.
- Crash into a planet to colonize it.
- If a colonized planet crashes into an empty planet, it colonizes it and starting a Combo counter.
- Crashing into planets and satellites (natural and artificial) fill your Blast Off meter, allowing you to use it again once it's complete.
- When hit, artificial satellites and spaceships release astronauts that can be picked up to start a Colonization Multiplier.
- You can stack Colonization Multipliers until you hit an empty planet.
- Avoid the Sun!
- Be a sport and post your Best Time and Score. ;)
We've been working hard to fix some game breaking bugs.
Hopefully the game is more playable now that the Home World doesn't disappear (we think) from the screen.
Bug List:
- Some animations need speed tweaks.
- Combos sometimes don't end.
- Combo and Multiplier counter sometimes don't appear (but points are still given).
- Planets that crashes into Sun isn't removed from the total number of planets and doesn't subtract score (don't worry though, only colonized planets are destroyed by the Sun).
- Some physics are f#&%$ up!
Missing Features:
- Leaderboards button in main menu leads nowhere.
- Intro animations aren't playing completely.
- Planet number should be random.
- ESC should bring up Pause Menu.
- No end screen when colonizing all planets.
- No Retry option on Game Over.
- Particle system is disabled.

@cadin - Glad you liked it =D, the tutorial is the same line as the opening sequence.
The gameplay is consistent and fun and I also really liked the idea of combos, but since we fly off in the opposite direction of the planet we hit, the visual effect that we get from them bouncing of each other is rarely visible (possibly from the speed). For me it was a great deal of fun going around a planet just to make it collide with it's near fellow on the occasions i managed to see several of them together.
There could be an opportunity to add combo objectives to the 40 planets or something alike that might extend the longevity of the game, although as it is it already made me come back several times to replay =D
Great entry! Congrats!
Since no one else is posting scores: just 102100 / 2:37, so far.
Could not load the webpage. Will try again later.
@Evil Cult - We have created a mirror to help solve the problem =).
Thanks a lot for your feedback and the kind words!
It's full of personality, polished look, great graphics. Well done you guys!
@liger13 If the controls were super precise and smooth there would be no challenge! xD The "mengs" are clumsy guys!
Your best option is to do an 8-figure or draw an ellipse if you keep circling a planet.
Oh, and for some reason, every natural satellite is using the cheese planet skin. Oh boy.
Lovely graphics, innovative gameplay and a whole lotta fun!
We hope for you to continue making games for Ludum Dare!
@Evil Sandwich Studios: Thanks. And we're really glad there are more and more Portuguese teams competing. :)
@vigrid: Thanks! That's the feel we wanted to achieve. Shame we didn't implement leaderboards on time.
(but the controls are a little effed up). Nice graphics, nice audio, good work!
Some polish plus hi-res graphics pack nd the game will be awesome.
It feels quite polished even for a jam game. Only Thing I would critizise is that the graphics from intro to game aren't that consistent. Everything else is just awesome. And omg/s is just a great measurement unit.
Really polished. I couldnt tell that it was made in 72 hours. That's very good.
Great work!
@Tcstyle: Good point. That happened because we didn't know the absolute scale the ingame elements would be in. That depended on factors like the ship speed and distance between them. Most of the art you see ingame was made with 4x that size!
@Qaterknan: You got them all? Awesome! I think you're the first one in here that did that, so I'll let you in on a little something. This is what should have happened:
http://www.ludumdare.com/compo/wp-content/uploads/2012/05/win_screen.jpg
This is the end screen you were supposed to have seen. Your score and initials input would be overlayed, which would go into the leaderboards:
Well done! I really enjoyed this one :)
