spectrumTrap by sugarlollipop

made by sugarlollipop for LD23 (COMPO)
My first ludum dare entry, in Ludum Dare 23.

My game is spectrumTrap. It's an art piece, concerning the 'tiny world' one can get trapped in, when one is constantly bombarded with issues of color. As a woman of color, I have faced such entrapment before and felt this to be a good time to externalize such feelings.

You can move with the arrow keys. Please enjoy the experience.

Please give it some moments to load as there is music and no preloader, sorry.

well I don't know if I would call it a game, but it was an enjoyable experience, not too sure what to make of it all though :p

Loved the soundtrack. The game itself is quite weird but interesting in its own way, and enjoyable. On a side note, aren't we supposed to submit the source code?

I love the creative take on the theme and the un-game approach. It maybe could be more fleshed out, but the idea is very refreshing.

Like the comment above me said, I'm not sure how much of a game it is... But its actually pretty relaxing to play, a longer music sequence, or a better transition between the one would have been nice. And to make it more of a game you could have added a mechanic that involves doing something to the beat of the song for score or something like that.

I didn't really feel your premise expressed in the game. Since all the dots were flashing rainbows, I didn't see "issues of color". I think it would've been interesting to present "issues of color" in a less abstract way; perhaps have some non-rainbow dots appear that affect the player's movement or the rules for creating new dots.

That said, I'm really glad you put something together for the competition!

This isn't a game. And there's no source code.

I'm all for "artsy" games, but I'm not just feeling this quite yet.

You could improve it vastly by making it interactive: for instance, the beat could be tied to the player hitting the boundaries. Or maybe when the player touches the colored dots, they change colors, or move or something. Or maybe the dots could follow the players... I don't know, just throwing some ideas.

So yeah, make more interactions! Good luck next LD!

(Oh yeah, and like the two previous commenters said, source please :-))

The presentation of the "trapped" concept works for me, but the game mechanics seem incomplete, like you ran out of time. I think a few more game-y elements such as walls closing in or having an "exit" that moves every time you get close to it would make this more like a game while still maintaining that trapped feeling.

I liked it! Our entry it's kind of artsy too. I feel like this one probably needs a more clear objective. Good soundtrack!

Pretty fun bouncing around in the box, and good ambiance. As caranha says there is room to improve by adding more detailed interactions.

Love the music, I was banging against a corner to the beat.

IMHO a little bit TOO minimalistic. But I think I beat the game, at least I got out and wasn't trapped any more! \o/

MORE NOT-GAMES PLEASE!

Repeating the call for source. Non-game, which is okay (since that's what I submitted, too). Music was good. A small change to the mechanic, like you can't move through existing squares would have helped with the "trapped" feeling.

Nicely done. I really really wish you had found a way to incorporate gaming aspects to this concept. It was quite beautiful, though.

I like the "art game" feel of it, but I never would have gotten the interpretation you offered if it wasn't for your explanation in the description. Would have liked to see more "game". The soundtrack is great:)
